Review for crystal mining

Price was $9.99. I bought this as a christmas gift for my almost-8-year-old son after reading some reviews on here. He enjoys science related things, and stones and rocks are a common discovery in both his pants pockets and his bookbag. Once he opened this gift, he didn't hesitate on chiseling, carving and chipping away. Almost 10 minutes into his excavation, he's declaring "mom! i want another one for my birthday! this is awesome! " i think he likes it ; ). . His had 9 crystals in it (box says 8 so we're not going to complain about a freebie), and he spent most of christmas day working away at the block of plaster (? ) and would shout out every time he uncovered a new crystal. He even wet the block, which seemed to reduce the amount of dust this thing produces, so i was ok with that. I'm not complaining by any means of the mess this makes, but just know ahead of time that this might be a good thing to do outside or cover your table with newspapers or the like. . All in all, he was very happy with this and he was entertained for several hours yesterday. I think i heard "mom, i want another one for my birthday! " about 30 times yesterday, so it was a big hit!

4m crystal mining kit Review (3564)

I was hesitant to get this after reading the reviews. I decided to go ahead and give it a try. My 4 year old attempted for about 30 seconds and then was done. My 6 year old has gotten one crystal out and has 2 others uncovered. That took him about an hour. He's done with it for today but will work little by little until he gets them all. We've been using it as homeschool science for first grade. I'm pleased with this product. I haven't let him use water on it because i find value in him working away carefully. It's hard to get boys to slow down and this toy does just that. . Update: my 6 year old is still working on it months later. He's been doing 5-10 minutes a day, sometimes longer. Last night the 4 year old came in and started working on it and finished up most of the crystals. A big fight ensued and now the 6 year old is done with it. I guess i should have had an extra one on hand because 6 months makes a big difference in what a 4 year old can do. It seems i am either rebuying this kit for my older one's birthday or another similar kit. -L. Helen

My daughter had a great time carving and chipping away at this. We put it in a lasagna pan to keep the mess to a minimum as it was too cold to do it outside. Next time i will have her wear a face mask because i realized too late that it does get all over and i'm concerned for the kids breathing the dust in. I have no idea if there is silica or something else in the "clay". About 8 nice sized stones were found inside, although only 3 types of stones. Would have been nice with 8 different types of stones rather than about 3 of each.

Click to see Notice4m Crystal Mining Kit (3564)"Bought this for my 10 year old for xmas. Decent kit for the price. The digging tool is decent. The paint brush is useless (too flimsy). The display case that comes with it is also useless because most of the gems won't fit, they're too big. The pouch is small. I happened to have one that was bigger so i gave that to my son. We did get an extra 5 gems in this kit but honestly most of them are boring cloudy white stones. I think this is what to expect for the price though. I also purchased the national geographic kit that has 15 stones. Cost was 3 times more than this one but the stones are nicer. I included a side by side picture. Son enjoyed both kits. All comes down to what you want to spend i guess."

GeoCentral Rock Crystal Excavation Dig Kit

We bought this for our 5 year old grandson. We used a rock as a hammer to help break the clay. It kept him busy for several hours over many days. If you are looking for instant gratification, this is not it. But if you are looking for a project to keep them busy this is great. He has found about 8 rocks/crystals. He loves it

Geocentral Rock Crystal Excavation Dig Kit (DNRC) FAQ.

A wonderful concept for your young excavator at a nice price! my youngest is 4 years old and all about digging up "gems"! i thought she would be bored after a bit, but she has worked a little every day to find her treasures. Her siblings and cousins now all want to dig stones. -Notice from W. Moore, Arizona

I got this for my 6 year old daughter and she loved it but my 8 year old son wanted to be a part of it too! it's very messy though- if you can, make this an outside activity! just a warning- it's smaller than it looks like it will be. It does have plenty of stones though.

- T. TraceyOur kid is really into rocks and this is perfect for him. He has been working on it off and on for a few days now, which is great. I like that it's not too hard for a 6-7 yr old kid to do it but not so easy they finish it in 5 min. It does make a huge dusty mess though, so i recommend doing it outside.

My 8 year old sat for a couple of hours digging the gems and stones out of it. He used the included tools for a couple of hours. Then i introduced him to the small ball-peen hammer i have and he finished 'digging' in no time. Beware - it is a mess. It is plaster so when it is broken down, it is dusty. We contemplated letting our son do it on the kitchen table. So glad we decided to put him in the garage.

This was a birthday gift for my 7 year old granddaughter. It required that her parents do most of the process but she helped. She was very excited to see it growing day by day and is displaying it proudly. They have not done any colors yet but made the white one and combined a small and large one to make it bigger. Instructions have to be followed to the tee for success.  4m crystal growing experiment

4m Crystal Growing Experiment (5557) FAQ.

Got this for a birthday gift for a 12 yr old girl. With help it was very easy to do, 7 days later her crystals were grown! . She chose to wait a little longer on 2 which seemed to not grow as much as the rest. The biggest crystal turned out best, its the big purple one in the pictures. . Over all great fun! . We plan on getting more, with 4 children these are a must! -Notice from G. Harrison, Harrow

Bought it for my niece. We grew nice crystals. Make sure to read and follow the instruction carefully and mix where it says to mix and don't mix where it says do not mix. Made all the difference.

- B. MahoodMy 6 year old granddaughter and her mom have enjoyed this kit. It works as advertised. The crystals are very fragile. They grow fast. Pretty cool. Just make sure mom or dad is involved. I didn't notice the age recommendations when i bought it.

My daughter got this for christmas and wanted to get started right away. I have to admit that the process for starting the crystals is a bit slow and tedious, especially since you basically have to repeat the same basic process three separate times to start the large, medium and small crystals. Each step starts with mixing hot water with the crystal powder and letting it set for a while. Then you pour the mixture into one, two or four separate containers, add the colorant and let it set again. Eventually you have to let the seven containers sit for up to seven days to allow the crystals to grow. Honestly, at this point, i wasn't expecting much. . But even within the first day we began to feel crystals growing if we put our fingers in the water. By the second day, we could actually see the crystals in the water. By the third and fourth day the crystals were huge - some were even poking out of the water. Do be careful, though, as the pointier ones can get awfully sharp (i found that out the hard way, of course). Then for the next couple days the crystals didn't exactly grow any more, but they formed small snowflake-like additions that grew around the edges of the cups. By the seventh day when we poured out the water and freed the crystals from their containers (they do get a bit stuck), they were big enough to fill the palm of my hand. . My daughter thoroughly enjoyed this kit. In fact, it's probably a good thing that the initial steps are so repetitive because by the end she was confidently doing the whole activity on her own. The whole family enjoyed watching the crystals grow over the course of the week, and my daughter proudly showed them off to her classmates (who were properly impressed) when she returned to school on monday. Definitely recommended for the budding geologist in your family.

National Geographic Break Open 10 Geodes Explore Crystals Science Kit

I read many reviews about this product before finally deciding to choose it over other options. (i always read the 1's, as well as the 5's). Ultimately, i selected the national geographic product on faith in their reputation over the years. But the reviews also played a significant role. Many/most of the low ratings centered around the size ("too small" being a common complaint), difficulty of breaking, and broke into many pieces. . The complaint about size boils down to unrealistic expectations for the cost of the product. The dimensions of the box in the picture suggest that the samples would not be more than about two inches in diameter. The price reinforced that conclusion. Large geodes aren't especially common, and the price asked for them reflects that. . The difficulty in breaking them and the shattering complaints are related. Channeling my inner forrest gump, this product is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you are going to get. Indeed, several of the pieces are solid throughout, are agates or concretions; it's essentially impossible to know in advance which are partially hollow and which are solid throughout unless one is familiar with the provenance of the samples. General inferences can be drawn. Given two pieces of similar size, the one with the lesser heft is more likely to be hollow than the other one. So if you have a kitchen scale (and ocd) you could, in theory, estimate which are hollow and which are solid by comparing the weights. The packaging is your friend in this regard-they have to pick pieces that are fairly similar in size to fill fixed-size boxes reasonably closely time after time. . Given your hypothesized "hollowness, " you can adjust your breaking strategy accordingly. (note to the statistically inclined: a bayesian approach to the problem, rather than a frequentist one, will serve you better). Unless you have a tile saw (and a face shield and sturdy gloves in addition to the supplied safety glasses), you will need a hammer and a chisel to break your specimens. You can find a chisel for trimming concrete blocks and bricks at any hardware store. Do yourself a favor and get one with the guard that prevents you from breaking your metacarpals if you miss the chisel head. Take the pieces you suspect are hollow and place them on a padded surface like a folded up dishrag, place the chisel lightly on the specimen and tap with a hammer-softly at first then increasing in force as necessary. Do not press the chisel forcefully on the surface. If truly hollow, excessive force applied by the chisel has the same outcome as just whacking the stone with the hammer-it will shatter into many pieces. Be patient. What you want to happen is for the shell to crack gradually like an egg. Repetitive hits of lesser force work better than one "mother of all blows" in this regard. . The specimens you believe to be solid or mostly so should still be placed on the padded surface (force applied is thereby focused on the contact between the rock and the chisel, not at both the top and broadly on the bottom of the specimen. My experience with these specimens in the product was that one could strike harder earlier with strong applied force of the chisel. Agates are commonly silicate filled, which means that they commonly fracture cleanly across the diameter of the specimen. . The bigger the geode, the greater the cost, and the more interesting the mineralogy, the greater the cost. Both criteria are in play with the natgeo product-they are relatively small with common mineral assemblages. This past may i was at put in bay near sandusky, ohio. Close by is heineman's winery, where you can walk into the world's largest geode. Check out their website if you plan to be in the area. I have an ma in geology (though i've been a statistician by experience for over 30 years, which accounts for my bayesian bent) and the geode (small cave? ) was extremely impressive! individual crystals weigh tens of pounds. There are nearby places where you can buy geodes up to several inches of diameter and have them cracked using a chain that encompasses the entire diameter of your selected specimen. Short having the saw, the chain method is next best; the force is applied "evenly" around the circumference-and you still get the kick of seeing what is inside.

Discover crystal treasure! geology doesn t get more exciting then breaking open rocks and finding crystal treasures! geodes can form with a variety of crystals inside and national geographic brings you the best variety from around the globe. National Geographic Break Open 10 Geodes Explore Crystals Science Kit (NGGEO10) FAQ.

I ordered this along with another company's pack of geodes for a homeschool science lab. There was no comparison! this pack had huge geodes that were amazingly beautiful when the children broke them open. It was such a great way to end our lesson on volcanos and these geodes impressed on their minds the amazing power of our wonderful planet. Everyone was happy with their geodes and were especially happy to take home their newly acquired gems from the earth! -Notice from I. Rowe, Wyoming

Purchased the geodes for my 7 year old's birthday. She absolutely loved breaking them open, but i was pretty excited about it too! we opened a few at a time and let the whole family and a few friends open one. I guess we got lucky and all of the rocks were actual geodes. No duds. Only one of the rocks was somewhat solid, but it still was filled with crystals. There were two different types of geodes in the kit. All of the crystals were either white or light gray-purple-ish. Very pleasantly surprised and pleased!

National-geographic-break-open-10-geodes-explore-crystals-science-kit-(nggeo10) set picture

- K. BrendonThese geodes are natural, not a manufactured product (and not cement as another reviewer claimed), so expect some variation. Because they are real, no one can look inside ahead of time and make sure all ten geodes will be spectacular when opened. I didn't get any with beautiful colored crystals inside, but most were hollow with interesting crystals. Only one was not quite hollow, but it had a swirl of pale blue agate inside of it, so we were pleased. My thirteen year old son and i used a regular old claw hammer and had no trouble opening any of them, although read the instructions carefully! some of them are actually pretty fragile and will dissolve into a pile of sand if you whack too hard to start. We also used a chisel with some of them to try to achieve an even split, as the instructions suggested. We did this outside on the pavement as it does make a small mess (easily swept away). I am only giving four stars instead of five because unless you have a portable vice (or are willing to pound geodes in your workshop), one person does have to hold the geode (and chisel) in place while the other person swings the hammer. It's inherently hazardous. I was the "holder" while my son wielded the hammer. Luckily, i still have all my fingers and some nice geodes to boot.

Excellent product! for quality, national geographic rock kits have been tops for us. We've purchased several sets of polishing rocks and this geode kit. The geodes are well-selected - no "duds" when they all broke open. Beautiful crystal formations inside. The kit does not come with a chisel or hammer, but safety glasses are provided. The educational booklet enclosed is also well-written. Excellent entertainment for my 9-year-old rock hound!

The F.A.Q. for 4m crystal mining kit

This should probably get 4 stars because messing with those tabbed bubble thingers to display your rocks is 1. ) surprisingly difficult to manage as an adult and 2. ) not necessarily large enough to hold what you'll mine out of the block, but the kid i bought this for had an absolute blast with it. He'd asked for minecraft items for his birthday, and i knew he'd get more than enough of that, so i was *that* adult and bought him something that was. Minecraft adjacent. He's not much of an outdoorsy sort of kid, spending most of his time playing video games, so i was pleasantly surprised at just how much he loved this. He wanted a video made and everything. Wish i could attach that somehow. Really, though, it was fun for us both, and that was well worth the extra star. As a note: we improvised some of the tools, as the hammer/chisel and brush it comes with is pretty weak. We also set up a washing station.

A number of questions have been asked here.

Q&A

(0) Question: Are these real crystals?

(1) Question: What is the plaster 'rock' made from?

(2) Question: Does the "frustration free" packaging also come with the display cases for the crystals like the more expensive option?

(3) Question: It says it ships in an easy open packaging. so is the original box shipped in a regular brown online store box?

(4) Question: Is this kit non-toxic?

(5) Question: Is this nice for a gift? going to a twin birthday party & know only one. want a gift for the other: is this small & cheesy as a gift, or no?

(6) Question: Are the crystals real?

(7) Question: Does it come with a magnifying glass?

(8) Question: Will this be too hard for a 4 year old to do?

(9) Question: Is this a digging for crystals kit or growing crystals kit? seems obvious but so many reviews show the crystals they grew!

My daughter got into mining kits recently and we've bought quote a few durig our summer vacation travel from different museums and parks stores. When i saw this on online store, it had good reviews and its looked like a good deals with the brick size and number of crystals you can dig and the tools included. My daughter was really excited to dig this but unfortunately its really hard! i even tried to help her saw the sand but even i had a hard time cutting thru it. In the end we had to use a real knife to cut thru the brick sand and pound on the pieces with a hammer to get to the crystals with only a few sand around it that she can "mine" thru.

My child had lots of fun doing this. Parents: for easy clean up let the child dig in a large box (sideways) or in a corner with newspaper. Pieces will fly. Lots of fun!

My 7 year old loved this! we had so much fun mining for crystals! i also think it's cool that within the directions it says to pick a crystal & give away to someone as a gift, because it's good to share the treasures your find, or something along those lines & i was really impressed with that. Not only is this teaching kids about science but it's also teaching them about sharing & being kind to others! we really had a lot of fun with this kit & i would purchase this again! we did receive a lot of the same crystals, but i understand it's a hit or miss with that & my son had fun identifying the different crystals & reading about each one! he ended up gifting out a lot of them to his cousins & even his little sister over christmas! this is an awesome product! thank you.

Both my kids (6 and 4) enjoyed this "mining" kit. Essentially, the manufacturer embeds about a dozen rough crystals in a brick of hard sand, and the child works to remove the sand and get the crystals free. It is definitely an outside toy (unless you want a big mess inside), so in decent weather, it is a great activity. . Contrary to the instructions, which seem to expect that a child will use a small hammer to remove the sand dry, neither of my kids would have had the patience to get the crystals out without using some water to soften the sandy brick. The need for water didn't bother me or them; it just sped up the process a little. Without water, it would have taken many hours. As it was, the activity kept them busy for about an hour and a half, and they loved the crystals.

I have a son who has adhd and sensory issues and was looking for something fun he can do while working on his fine motor skills. He's been interested in crystals lately so i figured this would be perfect. . It kept him busy for nearly 30 minutes until it got a bit tough and he needed help. Even then, he still stayed around and cleaned up the rocks with the brush which is still working on those skills. . My only complaints are that one of these crystals is an amethyst bead. I'm not sure what to make of it but it is pretty. Second thing is i wish there would have been more variety. We seemed to have got a bunch of the same ones. But it's really not a huge problem.

This is a fun toy. It doesn't have large scientific explanations or other real science-y attractions. This toy is for inspiring students to come alive with the wonder of discovery! my daughter loved this! it's totally worth the money to see the look of sheer wonder on her face when she uncovers another rock. It's very simple, not fancy at all. In fact, i might have thought it was boring. But she loved it. This is a learning toy, not because it has scientific terms for your child to memorize but because it inspires children to actively get involved in their learning, thus helping to create a life long love of learning.

Anyone looking for an activity that'll keep your little ones independently occupied (without the constant "mommy/daddy". ) needs to have this in the toy closet. It's definitely an outdoor activity, since the plaster makes dust. And it's obviously a one time use, but for $10 at least an hour of play, who can beat it? the tool that comes with it has a serrated edge on one side (like a dull butter knife) and a little mallet on the other side. He used it like a saw. Seriously, he's doing it now and has been at it long enough for me to empty dishes, load dishes, check email and write this review :). The stones themselves are a decent size, about the size of a large pebble or gum all. The box said the block has 8 stones but ours had 10. I'd say it's perfect for ages 5-8. . The only improvement i'd see for this product (but not enough to remove a star), was actually a comment my son made "mommy, shouldn't there be safety glasses in the box too? ". . Such a cute activity, ordering a couple for my mom to have on hand for when the kids are there.

Just to start off this is my husbands account and i am the mother of 5 children and bought this for our 7 year old daughter and 9 year old son. My only regret was not buying one for our 4. 5 year old son who watched on and was pretty upset he didn't have his own, but was able to get a few turns from his siblings. A few tips . . 1 i would definitely say this kit is best used outdoors. It makes a lot of dust or sand like particles. Its almost like a powder at times and can get messy. Don't wear your best. We found putting the plaster brick on a gallon size plasticware lid was perfect for occasionally dumping the dust off into the grass from our deck table where they worked. I don't think i would use this indoors, but it may work for you. . 2 i would start with a gallon size container or another storage device to store the brick and the tools/card/sachet it comes with in case your child needs a break. It was very easy to set in the gallon plastic container and come back to it and keep away from younger siblings. You can even store for another day if needed. . 3 this probably isn't for a child who gets frustrated easily or lacks patience or does not like tedious tasks. My children only used the tools it came with and my daughter excavated a good 30 minutes before even seeing a piece of a crystal. When she did it made it that much sweeter. She squealed with delight! she also found 3 crystals in the time it took her older brother to find 1. It really just depends where the crystals are placed and you are mining. . 5 after the above tip it should be obvious this isn't a project to be started if you have to stop in say 15 minutes. Just to read the instructions and set up and really get started i would at least give a good 45 minutes. That being said it took several hours to mine all the crystals. My son did it in a few days. . As a homeschooling family this was a great spring activity. They sat out on our deck at the table and as they started to complain a tad about how warm it was with the sun beating down on them i was able to talk with them a bit about archaeologists and how hot that can get in some climates and how they used to "dig" vs how they have more tools at their disposal now. I reminded them that this was a sure thing for them and not always the archaeologist. . The stones are very large compared to other sets i have read about i would say the stones probably are worth at least what you paid for the kit. I wish i had looked into making wire necklaces out of them. My daughter liked them in the little brown pouch it came with so she could feel them and look at them. My son chose to put them in the display card and id them. It comes with an id guide. Something i read in another kit was absent. . I will say i will be buying this kit for gifts this year. Such a great deal. The price has gone down $3 since i bought it and i still feel we got a great product at a great price! . . Have fun! . Liz

I ordered two of the crystal mining kits for my 13yr-old and 15yr-old nephews (i was determined to get them off video games). I know, i know. This is probably meant for younger children, but hey they liked it!

I bought this for my almost 5 year old for christmas. She was very excited about it. Since the weather is cold here we had to do this inside. I wish we could have done it outside because it was very messy. When i bought it i thought it would be a brick of coarse sand. It was actually more like plaster. When we dug in it there was a very fine dust created. I put the brick on an old baking sheet but the dust quickly covered the table and chair. Not the end of the world, but parents should be aware. My daughter liked digging in it but her arm got tired before we found the first crystal. We had to take numerous breaks. The kit contained a plastic paintbrush and a plastic combo hammer/knife. The hammer was pretty useless but the knife was handy. A metal butter knife is better. She was very excited when we found the crystals. The kit comes with little plastic things to put your crystals in. There is also a small bag made of felt to put your crystals in. The bag is small and cheaply made. The guide and instructions were very basic but the crystals were easy to identify. There were 8 crystals in the brick and they were around an inch in length each. Another note of warning for parents: the instructions warn the child should wear an apron or old clothes because the dust can stain. We used an apron but she was literally covered head to toe. The dust turns a greenish yellow colored when it gets wet. I'm hoping it doesn't really stain.

So much fun! it's quite messy though, so make sure that you are in an area that you don't mind getting a little dirty. I had my son work on it on the patio & it was covered with dust and rocks afterward, but he loved "mining" for the little crystals, and reading about what they were. The hematite was his favorite. It also comes with a little box to hold the crystals when their mining excursion is over. Lots of fun for little scientists! :)

I did a lot of research before buying this gift for my sister, who wants to be a geologist. I gave it to her for her birthday and we did the mining activity together that evening. There were supposed to be eight gems, but we found eleven! reading the reviews of other similar products, i was worried that we would only find small stones and that she would be disappointed. I had no such problems with this product. The stones were all reasonable sized. It was easy to get them out of the plaster. Speaking of, the plaster is also not hard to clean up if (when) it gets on your work space. All in all, my sister loved this product, and i've definitely considered buying it again.

My 6 year old grandson received this as a birthday gift and spent several hours excavating the 'rock' to find the hidden gems. His almost 9 year old brother was envious and requested one for his next birthday. Includes a gem identification chart and storage card. It is rather a dusty project, so i recommend placing the rock on a cookie sheet. T

This is the best gem mining dig i have gotten yet. The smithsonian gem dig was horrible with very very small gems. This kit on the other hand has very very nice sized gems. Somehow i had accidentally ordered 2 sets and i did not want to send it back. It was perfect. My son and i each got out own brick to excavate. It was so much fun. He got impatient with how long it wa staking and i keep trying to tell him that's how it goes but finally he got me impatient as well lol. So i grabbed two flat head screwdrivers and went to town. Mine ended up with 10 gems, his 8. I got 1 amethyst, 1 dolomite, 3 agates, 1 clear quartz/crystal, and i think 4 rose crystals. He got 2 amethyst, 1 red agate,
