istanbul boardIstanbul Board Game (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

Istanbul provides a great next-step experience for those who are looking for something beyond catan/ticket to ride/splendor. The game simulates a bustling bazaar where each player maneuvers a merchant around, dropping off assistants to gain goods/money and cards ultimately trying to be the most efficient in obtaining rubies. The game looks attractive on the table, . . My wife and i love this game - for the 30$ range, there is a lot of game in here, and replayability is a plus as the board can be set up randomly, although certain strategies may emerge after a while. Expansions can spice that up though and for gamers that enjoy the game and are interested in expanding, there are two available, that can be combined together into a mega-game variant 'the grand bazaar' that uses everything and feels like a more complex game.

I taught my 9 year old son and 13 year old daughter how to play and they enjoyed it as well. The two-player variant is also very enjoyable. Lots of different options for game play as the board can change every time you play as well."

Patchwork Board Game

Designer uwe rosenberg delivery another excellent game in patchwork. Don't let the quilting theme fool you; the gameplay appeals equally to people who couldn't care less about stitchwork. And while the theme isn't integral to the gameplay, it is fun to see a unique theme in the world of board gaming. Patchwork is a strictly two-player game wherein players choose pieces to fill in their boards, collecting bonus points buttons along the way. It is fairly strategic, but not a brain-burner like many other abstracts. It's not like chess where you'll need to think several turns ahead and for several minutes before each move. Rather, it plays at a good pace, with little downtime. Despite being a two-player game, patchwork is rather non-confrontational. Even when you're losing in the game, you rarely feel as though the other player is picking on you. Usually you'll have your eye on obtaining a few key pieces that you need to finish your quilt and nab a better score. I highly recommend patchwork. It's easy to learn an very accessible to experienced and new gamers alike.

Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. In the past, it was a way to make use of leftover pieces of cloth to create clothing and quilts. Today, patchwork is a form of art, in which the designers use precious fabrics to create beautiful textiles. The use of uneven pieces of fabric in particular can result in real masterpieces and is therefore being practiced by a large number of textile artists. To create a beautiful quilt, however, requires effort and time, but the available patches just do not want to fit together. So choose your patches carefully and keep a healthy supply of buttons to not only finish your quilt, but to make it better and more beautiful than your opponent s.

Patchwork Board Game (Mayfair Games) FAQ.

Fantastic game! my girlfriend and i have been playing this a few times per week. While the theme is a patchwork quilt, don't let that deter you. It provides a nice whimsical theme as a backdrop to fantastic mechanics! the gameplay revolves around an economy and time management as it relates to the purchase of tetris style pieces that you place on your personal board. Each piece you buy costs both currency, in the form of buttons, and time in the form the piece that you are placing. Players are forced to strategize against each other as they pick and choose their pieces. Each player can only choose one of the next three pieces, so you must decide if and what to allow the other player to purchase. As the game progresses, you must ramp up your button currency economy while placing as many pieces as you can. When the game concludes, your score is calculated by both the missing squares on your board and your current supply of buttons. I highly recommend this game to couples, as it was designed for two players. Otherwise, i'd say anyone who enjoys spacial reasoning and tetris! -Notice from R. Marguerite, District of Columbia

Summary - don't let the theme scare you off - patchwork is one of the best two player games you can play! . . How to play - in patchwork you are trying to fill a 9x9 square with pieces from a quilt. Each piece is shaped differently creating a tetris like puzzle that is great fun to try and solve. . On a turn you take one of 3 available pieces and add it to your board. Each piece has a price and takes a specified amount of time which advances you towards the end of the game. Some pieces also have buttons on them which earn you additional buttons (money) at certain points of the game, allowing you to buy better pieces. . Each turn you have to weigh the price of a piece, vs. How well it fits on your board, vs. How much time it costs, etc. It's leads to some really interesting, tough decisions. . At the end of the game you add up all your buttons and subtract two points for each empty space to determine your score. . Who is the game for - couples! perfect game for a date night at home. . Pros - great depth to complexity ratio. - building a puzzle with tetris pieces is just fun! . - great components. . Cons - theme may not appeal to everyone.

- L. GuestThis is a recent game from the highly esteemed german game designer: uwe rosenberg. His previous titles have spanned a broad spectrum of depth and size. Games like agricola, caverna, ora et labora, and le havre are massive, complex games (though all fantastic in their own right). But he also has more compact and accessible games like bohnanza, le havre: inland port and agricola: all creatures big and small. Patchwork fits nicely into the latter category. . Pros:. * easy to teach. Even non-gamers could learn the few rules to the game in about 5 minutes. * highly replayable. * rewarding strategic depth. * great depth/length ratio. You can complete a game in under 30 minutes but still feel like you were able to put a lot of thought into it. * limited choices can help prevent analysis paralysis. You are either taking income or picking a tile. If you pick a tile, you have only three options. Most turns take less than 30 seconds which keeps the game moving quickly. . Cons:. * setup, while not a significant burden, does take a few minutes to get all the components sorted and lined up. * jagged pieces occasionally don't quite fit within each other and can get stuck. * requires a lot of table space for just a two-player game. * perhaps this isn't even so much of a con as an important thing to be aware of, but this game is purely deterministic. Meaning, once the initial setup is complete, there's no inherent randomness to the game. It is just your opponent's decisions and yours. As such, this can lead to a skills gap where a better player can easily beat another player who is not as good or less experienced. This is by no means a flaw of the game-clearly it's inherent to the design-but it's something to be aware of going in. If you want a two-player game that uses randomness to lessen the disparity in player skill, something like jaipur or morels might be to your liking. . In short, this is a fantastic game that should be considered by all board gamers who ever play with just two players. It does a few drawbacks, but they are greatly overshadowed by the low price and tremendous depth and replayability of the game.

A game about quilting. That kinda threw me for a bit but everyone and their sister were raving about it so i had to find out for myself. Turns out, everyone and their sisters were right. . Patchwork is a game for exactly 2 players, ages 8+ and plays in about 30-45 minutes. . How to play. . Thankfully this game involves no actual sewing because the last time i tried that i ended up in the er with a sheepish grin on my face. You ll find patchwork to be a bit different than your average game in both set up and play. To begin with, each player will take a quilt board representing their as of yet not started sewing project. The quilt board is divided up into a number of 1 1 squares. They ll then take 5 buttons (the currency in the game) and a time token. . There s a third board in the game which is the central time board. Players will each place their time token on the starting space of the time board. Now, the most fun setup can really begin. There are a whole bunch of patches shaped, tetris-like tokens that you re going to arrange randomly in a (fairly large) circle around the time board. Locate the smallest patch (a 1 2 square patch) and place the wooden neutral token between that and the next patch, going clockwise. Each of these patch tokens will have a little tag image on it that will show a number next to a button to indicate how many buttons they cost, and a number next to a timer icon, to indicated how many spaces on the time board you ll move your time token if you choose that patch. . Lastly, you ll lay out the special 7 7 bonus token and place the five special 1 1 patches on the time board. . The first thing you should know is that patchwork doesn t necessarily alternate turns. The player who s time token is furthest back on the time board will get the next turn, which could (and will) mean players take multiple turns in a row. . On your turn, you can do one of two things. Advance your time token to the space just after the other player s time token on the time board and get yourself some buttons or take and place a patch on your patch board. . In the first option you ll receive as many buttons as spaces you ve moved to get past the other player s time token advance three spaces, get three buttons. And that s it, since the other player s time token is now behind yours, it s their turn. Remember, buttons are currency in this game. . If you choose to take a patch, you ve got to follow these five steps. First, the patch must be within three patches in front of the neutral token you placed amidst all those patches in the game setup. Second, you ll move the neutral token to be next to the patch you ve chosen. Third, you pay the number of buttons indicated on the patch (some patches are free). Fourth, you will place the patch you just bought on your quilt board. Last, you move your time token on the time board the number of spaces indicated on the patch token you just placed on your quilt board. . Some of the spaces on the time board have some special powers on them. There are five special patches, which are 1 1, leather looking patches. These can only be gotten off the time board, and you only receive them if you are the first to move your time token onto or past them. The second special power are the button icons. If you move past a button icon, you then receive button tokens! look at your quilt board many (but not all) patches will have graphics of buttons sewn into them count each individual button and take that many button tokens. . When you re placing that patch on your quilt board, you have to follow a few simple rules too. You can flip or turn the patch any way you like as long as it fits entirely on the board and doesn t overlap any other patches. That s where the tetris aspect of the game comes in. . Finally, there s a special 7 7 token the first player to fill in a 7 7 grid completely on their quilt board receives this token and scores an extra 7 points at the end of the game. Speaking of which . . End of the game and scoring. The game ends when both player s time tokens reach the last space on the time board and players determine their scores. Add up the number of button tokens you have left, and subtract 2 points for each empty 1 1 spaces on your quilt board. That s your score. If you had for example 11 buttons left and had managed to snag the 7 7 token, you d start off with 18 points. If you had six empty spaces (6*2 12) you d subtract 12 from 18 and end the game with 6 points. . Why you should play. . Answer this question truly and honestly. How many games in your collection have a sewing or quilting theme? now how many games in your collection with this theme are really engaging, allow for some interesting and thinky strategy, have just a bit of a puzzle aspect to them, allow you to build something of substance during the game, and are extremely well balanced? . . Patchwork checks all of these boxes and does so in a really compelling way. You re looking ahead in the patches portion of the table to see where the neutral token will next fall, while trying to calculate how many spaces forward you want to move to get more buttons and maybe grab that 1 1 patch you need to fill in your 7 7 grid so you can finally get that extra points token. You re opponent is doing that very same thing too, and perhaps plotting a way to take two turns before you ll get your next so that the neutral token will skip over that one patch you really need. . It s a lot of fun and sometimes a little frustrating in that good oh, i can t believe you just did that to me! kind of way. I ve enjoyed quite a few games while waiting for another friend to show up or between my wife and i or luca and i. Patchwork hits that sweet spot of a 2 player filler game that doesn t overstay it s welcome and still offers a complete gaming experience. It s what i d expect from uwe rosengberg who s designed (among many, many wonderful games) another tight, small game i love, bohnanza. . Be warned however, for such a small box the game ends up taking up quite a bit of space! it s those patches you ve got to spread about. There s a whole bunch of them! other than that extremely minor thing i don t have much in the way of criticism rather i m still pleasantly surprised that a game with a quirky theme is so much fun.

Imhotep Builder of Egypt Board Game

This is a great game, really easy to learn. Resource gathering, strategic moves, sometimes helping yourself, sometimes trying to derail the other players. So far we've only played with 2 players, but i imagine it'll be a lot of fun with 4 as well. . Just one thing, there was an additional item in the box. Fortunately, he's really cute so i'll keep him ; ) just kidding - my cat wanted to be part of the gang and feel like he was playing too. But he lacks opposable thumbs so he plays in boxes haha

Imhotep. The legendary architect of the egyptian monuments. His awe-inspiring structures and brutal tactics earned him divine status among ancient egyptians. Can you match his ruthless determination to build the most revered monuments? to do this, you will need to transport stone blocks on ships from your quarry to different construction sites. But you alone do not choose where the ships go. Your opponents have monumental plans of their own and want to prevent your success. A fierce competition for the precious stone resources plays out. Only with the right strategy and a little luck can you succeed. In imhotep, the players take on the roles of ancient egyptian architects. Over six rounds, they try to transport their stone blocks to end up in the most valuable positions at five construction sites: pyramid, obelisk, chamber tomb, temple, and market. But a player can only choose one of three actions in a turn: excavate a new stone block from the quarry, load a block onto a ship, or move a ship to a construction site. From there, the massive stone blocks must be unloaded in order from bow to stern and placed on the sites in preset sequences. Depending on where the blocks end up, players earn different point values either immediately or at the end of the game. In each turn, you must weigh your options for getting your own stones into place and thwarting your opponents' placement plans. You must get your blocks to the right places, in the right order, at the right time to be the greatest architect.

Imhotep Builder Of Egypt Board Game (Thames Kosmos) FAQ.

Super fun game! i really like this game. It is quite simple in concept but really deep in gameplay. This game was a spiel des jahres (game of the year) award nominee for 2016 and though it didn't win i really feel that it should have. Such a fun game. The components are stellar, nice chunky cubes, solid cardboard tiles, and solid finish cards. The game itself revolves around simple decisions on ones turn they may, get more blocks, place blocks, or move boats. But those simple decisions can be extremely important. Boats can be shipped to one of several destinations and those locations will then score immediately, end of game, or end of round as specified. Scoring can be a bit fiddly however, the components are extremely well marked and with a minor amount of background knowledge one could probably play this game without even reading the rules. Scoring for tiles is clearly labeled on the tiles. I also feel that the game moves quickly and games are over in a flash making it easy to play another round or another game during game nights. . This one is a real home run! -Notice from W. Fabian, Buckinghamshire

Very enjoyable. You load your building blocks onto boats, then dock them by various projects. You can add your blocks, sail to an advantageous project, or dock your opponents blocks to their disadvantage.

Surprising amount of strategy to this game. Very easy to learn, but a lot of depth as you play more and more. It was a blast playing with 3 people, can't wait to try it with more!

Five Tribes

Crossing into the land of 1001 nights, your caravan arrives at the fabled sultanate of naqala. The old sultan just died and control of naqala is up for grabs! the oracles foretold of strangers who would maneuver the five tribes to gain influence over the legendary city-state. Will you fulfill the prophecy?  invoke the old djinns, move the tribes into position at the right time and the sultanate may become yours!   designed by bruno cathala, five tribes is a bit more of a "gamers' game" than days of wonder's standard fare.  the game builds on a long tradition of german games with wooden maples in a unique twist on the worker placement game genre. You need to look ahead to determine what moves will not only position you to score well, but put your opponents at a disadvantage. It's when, how and where you dis-place the five tribes of assassins, elders, builders, merchants & viziers that will determine your victory or failure!   included are: 30 game tiles depicting the sultanate of naqala; a bag of 90 wooden maples with yellow viziers, red assassins, green merchants, blue builders and white elders; palm trees, palaces and camels; 22 jinn cards; 54 resource cards, plus 5 djinns, victory coins, scoring pad summary sheets and rules booklet.

Ravensburger 81243 The Castles Of Burgundy

Castles of burgundy is the euro-game picture in the dictionary. The theme and art won't be the reason you'll love it, but if you like any kind of strategy, once you play you'll be hooked. You will get a lot of points; everything you do will give you points or get you on the way to getting points. You'll be rolling dice to allow you to perform actions; placing tiles, shipping goods, and jockeying with all the other players for the best options on the shared board. Castles of burgundy is a great example of how fantastic game mechanics can trump art style, no matter how boring the art is. . Positives. . In castles of burgundy, even if your dice roll is not what you were hoping for, you will always have something to build, gain, or otherwise improve your score. There are options all over the board, and many of the options will allow you to "chain" moves together. It's a lot of fun to figure out a play that creates three or four further moves, or to land that perfect tile, ready to rack up the points in the next round. . At first glance of the board, burgundy seems to have an overwhelming amount of choices available each turn, but the dice roll restricts the amount of plays that can be made and streamlines each turn. After games of catan, agricola, or dominion, where you always need resources to purchase what you need, it's refreshing to have the only requirement be to roll a certain number. You won't get the feeling that you're "never going to roll that five i need" like it often happens in catan, since you can adjust the roll as you need to, and you're only rolling for a 1 through 6. . There are a lot of interesting strategies to use; some players will take a route that gets a lot of up front points, whereas another might build a strategy that is rewarding more at the end of the game. Often in our games someone will be up by thirty or forty points, until a late push by someone else would close the gap right at the end. This is not a game where you will struggle for points; just about everything you do will create something. The trick is finding the moves that don't just get you some points, but get you a lot of points. . Negatives. . The game boards are small, and the tiles smaller and sometimes hard to read. The artwork is drab, though serviceable, and doesn't really tie to what some of the tiles do. The looks alone are probably a reason that those on the fence won't give it a chance. Once you get all the pieces out, the tiles don't easily shuffle without flipping over to the wrong side, and it takes some time to get all the pieces set on the board. . Some of the "knowledge" tiles makes sense based on the icon graphics, but many do not. You'll play your first several games with the instruction book handy to look up what each of the tiles do. With four players, it can drag on a bit, especially with new players. We played a four player game with two new players and it took over 2 1/2 hours. . Final thoughts. . There are a lot of different ways to score points in castles of burgundy. However, sometimes it feels like the scores are tethered together and that everyone will land at about the same final score if they are the same skill level. Everyone will be picking up just about the same bonuses, albeit at different points of the game. In these games, sometimes a random knowledge tile picked up in the middle of the game can sometimes swing the balance. Many times, all players will have wildly different scores throughout the game, when right near the end they'll somehow end up with similar scores. An experienced player will nearly always beat a newbie, but it's generally always close when two players of similar skill level square off. . Once you get a few rounds in you'll start to appreciate the gameplay design. Everything does give you points, but there is definitely a strategy in figuring out the most efficient way to get points, or what type of points to go for at which stage of the game, keeping everyone else's gameboard in mind to deny them the tiles they are looking for. This elegant design is what makes castles of burgundy currently one of our favorite mid-weight games. . Note: full review of this game, including gameplay descriptions, bad puns, and a lot more pictures available at playbegins. Com

Ravensburger 81243 Castles Of Burgundy (Toys And Games) FAQ.

This is a game that is very complicated. I am 63 and an avid life-long board game player. My 17 yr-old grandaughter and i opened and started doing the prep to play this today. It took us two hours to go through the prep instructions and get all of the pieces ready. There are four sheets of cardboard punchouts; but the hard part was when we started reading the instructions! oh my! each piece is so integral to the play of the game and there were so many options for everything to make the game more in-depth. Perhaps it was because it was late and we were tired, but it overwhelmed us. We decided to play it with the younger children and play it like a bingo game instead for them! the game is made sturdily and will last a lifetime due to its quality; i'm sure if someone likes a very intensive playing/thinking game (even more-so than risk or stratego or careers! ), they would love this game. We cannot imagine children playing it. We have purchased six games from the same company. We love them because they are so different from other board games and play them all of the time, but this one was just too complicated. -Notice from T. Newell, Champagne-Ardenne

A brief overview of what one gets with this game:. . - cheap cardboard components with glossy thin player mats. - barfy-looking artwork. - a theme so thin it is starving. - two colored six-sided dice are the central component of the game, and they are used to determine your possible actions on your turn. - point salad so severe it is a virtual point salad bar. - fiddly to set up and difficult to put away. . . So did i accidentally give it five stars? no. The castles of burgundy is among my favorite games of all time. I am always willing to play this game. It does not satisfy on any of my more predictable measures of a board game i love, but it succeeds in what a game is ultimately all about - gameplay. Everything in the way this game flows is so perfectly honed that i forgive it for not having much of a theme, for having "goods tiles" that are not even described in any other detail other than the dice number you have to roll in order to sell them, hell, for being centered on dice rolls. . The game is light on strategy but as a tactical game, it is the best i have ever played. For how under-produced the production is, there is always a myriad of decisions that can be made on every single turn. You have fifty decisions to make total in the game, with two dice rolls every single round, with five rounds in every phase (phases not named thematically, but named a, b, c, d, e) - and the goal is to optimize those decisions in such a way that fills your manor with tiles that do have names for theme purpose, but they really amount to nothing more than scoring points here and there. You can use a dice to take tiles offered on the main board that matches the dice number you rolled. You can use a dice to play tiles corresponding to a dice number on your player mat. You can use a dice to sell goods. And you can use a dice to generate two workers (which can modify the number of any dice). Also if you have some silverlings (the scarce money in this game) you can buy from a market in the center of the board. . And that is about it. But it is so fun. Really, really fun. And with how many possible things each tile can do once added to your manor, the way the game comes together, and the paths to victory, can be near-unlimited. All of the different types of tiles can do so many different things, but it never feels overwhelming to learn what they all do, or paralyzing to find the perfect use for them. There is not a linear order that you have to take your actions every turn. The rules are tight, but they are not restricting. . This is a game that has everything i hate in a game, yet totally makes up for it, all of it, with its gameplay design and brilliance. It is a title every tabletop fiend should own, even if they don't usually like euro games. A point salad with all the fixings.

- K. SheilaSuper fun! . . The choices can "seem" overwhelming, but the role of the dice means that your actual choices are limited. A very tactical game meaning that you must decide how best to use the dice rolls that you get, rather than planning out the next 5 moves ahead of time. There are definite ways to adjust the dice rolls, and you never feel like there is nothing for you to do. Something is always available even if it is just gathering more workers (to adjust dice rolls). . I thought my girlfriend who likes theme and lighter games would hate this game. And the first round or two she did. But then it all started to click with her and she really got into it and loved it. (it also helped that i explained a "theme" of- you have been given this land by the king, and it is up to you to make it the best province in the land). . Lots of choices, a little luck (mitigated), and tons of fun makes this game a blast to play. And when you win it is because of the skill that you played with.

I bought this game for my husband for his birthday last november. We love to play strategy games (catan, carcassonne, 7 wonders, agricola, puerto rico, etc. ), and after reading reviews about castles of burgundy, decided to give it a try. Well, as with all strategy games, it took a while to read through all the rules and learn how to play the game, but once we got the hang of it, we really liked the game! the two of us played it several times together, and games took us about 50 minutes to an hour to play. We liked it so much that we thought it would be a fun game to play with family at christmas. Well, with 4 people, it took much longer! i mean, duh, of course it would take longer with double the people (two of which were learning it for the first time). If you're not a game enthusiast, this game could certainly be a little overwhelming, and that's how the 2 family members that played with us felt. Not only did it take 30 minutes to set up/explain the game, but then it took almost 2 1/2 hours to play the game! now, i don't mind long games, if they're meant to take that long. But when you have people who deliberate over every option and take 5 minutes per turn, it can seem agonizing. . Each player essentially has 25 turns in the game, so if you are playing with 4 people, that's 100 turns in the game. If each person only takes 1 minute per turn, that's an hour and 40 minutes. If each person takes 2 minutes per turn. You do the math! if you're into strategy games, then playing a long game is no problem! however, if you're not that crazy about the prospect of a 2 or 3 hour game, maybe this isn't for you. Of course, the more you play it, the faster you get. . Overall, we really like the game, and it is fairly fast with only 2 players. It's one that will certainly keep it's place in our game repertoire!

Lost Cities - The Card Game

I bought this game based solely on good reviews and am very happy with it. It's simple, but that's what i love most about it. We have a ton of strategy games and sometimes i just want to relax and not think too much. This game is perfect for that. . The theme is pretty irrelevant, but it's nice they tried, i guess. There are five different colors of cards, one for each of the numbers 1-10, as well as 3 bet cards for each that multiply your scores. Each player takes turns placing a card either in a column in front of them to earn points, or into a discard pile, always of the corresponding color, then they draw a card from the deck or from one of the discard piles. The cost of starting a column is 20 points. Each card you lay down in a column must correspond to that column, and must increase in value (ie. 2, 4, 7, 9, 10). After the last card is drawn, the round immediately ends and you add up your points. With each column, you add up the numerical values of the cards you place (with my previous example of 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, that column would equal 32 points), then you subtract the 20 points it costs you for starting a column of that color (so then that column is worth 12 points). You do that for each color column you've placed cards for, add it all together, and then that is your total for that round (you play three rounds). There also betting cards as i have mentioned. They must be placed before any numbers have been placed. You can play multiple bets on top of each other, but once you have place a number, you cannot place more bets on that column. So, with the same example, if you had played 2 betting cards, followed by 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, you would add up your numerical cards to get 32, then subtract the 20, then your bet card would go into affect. So with 2 betting cards, that 12 points is now tripled into 36. This makes starting a column even more hazardous because if you place 2 betting cards, and fail to place any numbered cards, your total for that column is the negative 20 it cost you to start it, tripled! that would not go so good for you. There's just enough luck mixed with strategy that anyone can win, and it ain't over til it's over, as they say. . The game goes quickly, you don't have to talk, you don't have to pay attention to what the other player is doing (unless you want to pick up a card they've discarded), and there's not much to think about. Sometimes you need a game like that. Maybe that's not the type of game for you but it's very relaxing for me, especially with so many rounds of settlers, dominion, etc. Under my belt.

Who will discover the ancient civilizations? two explorers embark on research journeys to remote corners of the world: the himalayan mountains, the central american rainforest, the egyptian desert, a mysterious volcano, and the bottom of the sea. As the cards are played, the expedition routes take shape and the explorers earn points. The most daring adventurers make bets on the success of their expeditions. The explorer with the highest score after three rounds of expeditions wins. The rules of the game are simple, but beware: the lost cities hold many unseen mysteries! .

Lost Cities - Card Game (Thames Kosmos) FAQ.

This is a fantastic game for two people! . . It's very, very simple to learn, yet hits the sweet spot of having enough strategy to make it interesting, but not so much that it's intimidating. Do you start a new "expedition" now, or wait for a "wager" card? how long can you hold onto that card your opponent needs before you have to discard it? should you start a new expedition, or will you be stuck with a point-losing boondoggle at game's end? and, will there be enough turns to get it all done? . . It also lasts just about the right amount of time, around 20 minutes per hand (thought you'll find yourself playing game after game after game anyways, as it's addicting! ). . It's also pretty to look at. Lovely card art, and the large size of the cards also enhances the aesthetics. Handsome discard-pile board as well. . Bonus: you could ditch the board and easily play this with only the cards, making it very portable. . Highly recommended! -Notice from S. Wanda, Indiana

I bought this card game because i wanted a 2-player game to enjoy with my husband. The rules are simple but the gameplay allows for quite a bit of strategy and opportunity to learn your opponent. We've enjoyed playing it together and also play against our 8-year old son. He picked the game up quickly but it was too difficult for our 6-year old. The box says for ages 10+, but this was my experience. . The cards have a good quality feel and the game box is sturdy. The graphics are nice, but personally i don't feel they add much to the game. . We've owned it about 2 months now and now keep a running score. The game doesn't come with score cards or tally sheets, but a quick search on the internet brought up several printable versions. Since the game only consists of cards and a playing board, there is plenty of room to store a pencil and small paper in the plastic insert or larger pieces of paper under the plastic insert. (we chose to keep score digitally in a spreadsheet. ). . The product description includes accurate pictures of the box, playing board, and cards. I've taken a couple photos of the inside in case anyone is interested in how it fits together on the inside. Hope this review helps.

- Q. GarnerThis is a fun, quick game that is accessible to virtually anyone. If you're trying to introducing gaming to people who have never played a "modern" game or who only enjoy things like poker, this is a game to try. It can sometimes be frustratingly challenging, and sometimes deceptively simple. There is definitely an element of luck in how the deck is shuffled - those cards you desperately need could be on the bottom of the deck and will never become available. There's also some push your luck in deciding when to wager (and how much) and when to skip cards to get things moving along. There's player interaction in the form of discarding cards that your opponent may pick up, which means you'll need to be watching what they're playing as much as what you're playing.

Super fun! i was looking for a game to play with my so, because it's hard to find two-player games. We've only played it twice, but both games have been full of excitement. We've each won once. It's pretty quick to learn, and there are a lot of ways to play the game. I can't wait to play it again!

The F.A.Q. for istanbul board game

Games we love: catan, 7 wonders, ticket to ride, pandemic, jamaica, power grid. This game ranks with all of them. . Pros:. Design - unique and well thought-out! the instructions come with several suggestions for how to set up the board, and you can also do it randomly. The different set-ups is where this games value comes in - every game can be so different! . Interaction with others - it feels like you are creating your very own game/strategy, but you are definitely affected by what the other players do as well! this creates twists and turns and puts people on the edge of their seats! . Game mechanics - very unique and really engaging. The game's outcome is based on your strategy and other peoples'. There are dice, but only for a few things that don't determine the overall end status of the players. Play-time - 30-60 min. Depending on how many players, and we want to play again as soon as we're done! . Art - beautiful! . Components - almost worth the price alone, the components are visually appealing and sturdy. Box - well made and holds everything nicely. Comes with extra bags for small pieces, plenty of storage. Instructions - just read through them as you set up the board, and it will all come together. There hasn't been one discrepancy so far and if we have had a question, the answer in the instructions is easy to find and clearly understandable. Once you've played a few turns, the game is clear as day and the strategies ensue! . Pace - i can't even get up for a glass of water! before i know it, it's my turn again! . . Cons:. - it is not as heavy a game as some people may like - e. G. Not as intricate as power grid. - the theme (hustle & bustle of turkish outdoor market competition, get the most rubees) isn't as appealing or engaging to some as trains, pirates, or curing diseases. - first set up is a little confusing to look at all the new symbols. . We have played with 2 and 3 players so far and i can't wait to play with more! i can tell already that the more people you have the more interaction there will be. This game will be in the collection for a long time.

Answer:

I picked this because it has some different game mechanics from the other board games in my collection and because the modular board makes it great for packing. I was not disappointed; the game's box is a standard size, but it comes with zip lock bags instead of a plastic organizer that makes it easy to pack up the pieces without the box. I downloaded the rule book onto my tablet and the game easily fit in the small, odd places between clothes in my suitcase. . The gameplay is quick an engaging with little down time. It's a basic pick up and deliver mechanic with each player making only one move and taking one action each turn. This means that, even in the first play through, the turns go around the table quite quickly. I also like that, after the random set-up, there is little to no chance involved. There are a few tiles on the board that involve betting with dice and a random card draw, but with those minor exceptions this is a game of decision making skill rather than lucky die rolls.

I liked it. Plays quickly even with 4 people. Lots of different strategies can be followed and most games end up very close. Ability to randomize the board helps with replayability. I like playing it solo as well and controlling two or three merchants at once to try out different strategies. . Components are of good quality.

This is a great game! we play it frequently. It's a great 2-player game, as well as a 4 or 5 player game. . The reason i don't give it 5 stars is because the wagon pieces don't fit together well. You have to watch which wagon pieces come from which wagon (and in what order) for them to fit properly. This is really annoying. I contacted the company and they indicated they would send replacement wagons. I'm waiting to see if they sent replacements and if the replacements fit together better. My friend has this game and her wagon pieces fit in all wagons in any order.

Great fun! my wife and i have been playing this game for a few months now and its fantastic. The board layout variation means the game retains its replayability, nothing is too difficult to learn and there are many ways to go about winning giving each person their choices in how to play.

G. Helen, Darlington says

Easy to learn, fun to play, different complexity with different setups. No matter which group i play with everyone just loves the game. Justified in winning kennerspiel award

Q. Hurst, Rutland

One of my absolute new favorite games! it seems more complicated than it is, but it actually plays very easily and pretty quickly. I taught my 9 year old son and 13 year old daughter how to play and they enjoyed it as well. The two-player variant is also very enjoyable. Lots of different options for game play as the board can change every time you play as well.

J. Judith, Plymouth says

Game came undamaged and in perfect condition. Lightweight game that isn't too long and easy to teach. Worker placement with trading goods style.

Y. Elanor, Doncaster

I was looking for a new game for my husband and i to play, and after doing some research decided on this one. Though admittedly not a huge "gamer" in the board game culture sense, we like to have a bunch on hand to break out instead of just sitting in front of the tv to unwind. We have played and enjoyed:. . -ticket to ride. -catan 5th edition. -firefly: the game. . We really loved firefly but i was looking for an option that would be a tad shorter. I also was keeping an eye on options with possible expansion packs, so we could add to it in the future if we really enjoyed it. Since it is usually just the two of us, having great gameplay with 2 players was a must- but we wanted an option to add players when getting together with friends and family. . We have played a few times and so far i am very happy with my purchase for the following reasons:. . -easy set-up and rules. Each player is racing to collect rubies, which can be acquired a few different ways. Along the way you are also acquiring money and goods- mostly to help with the larger goal of collecting rubies. The board game consists of 16 place tiles. -nice middle ground between strategy and luck. You can roughly plan ahead, but not as much as with some of the above mentioned games. In that sense, it is a somewhat relaxed/go-with-the-flow game as opposed to a "i need to constantly be thinking about and planning moves 8 moves in advance" type of game. -since the tiles can be rearranged, the game will differ slightly each time you play- as you figure out the most efficient way to navigate the board. . Overall, this was a nice purchase for us. The key to keeping it interesting, i think, is to always use a random tile layout. I am sure adding more players adds a whole new dimension and i look forward to trying out one of the several expansion packs!

This game is awesome. Buy it now! if you love settlers of catan this game is similar and fun. Best part is you can play it with 2 people

O. Megan, Kirklees

I really like this game. It falls short of "love", and i really bought it because the price was right. But it's a great game to get people into some euro games after they've played settlers or ttr. It's a great next step, and the variable board will keep it fresh for a long, long time.

Q. Fabian, Colorado says

Fantastic game. My boyfriends and i enjoy a variety of two player (this can play up to 4) and because the layout can change, we have fun changing the scenario every time. We still love to play this and enjoy exploring different strategies. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone.

J. Candy, Florida

Fun game that can be changed so it can be different every time

A. Bertie, Wokingham says

We have been searching for games that play well in a 2 player set-up, but with options for additional players when we have friends over. My wife loves this game. With the game board being adjustable, we can modify it so we don't get burned out. We have yet to play it with friends yet, but we are looking forward to it. . We have purchased a few games this year, and we are very happy with all of them, but this one has been just great. The quality of the components, the artwork and the game play is just great. I think this will be a game we will be giving as a gift to a few of our friends.

L. Angela, Colorado
