Betrayal House On Hill – 2nd Edition (Avalon Hill) 260

Review for betrayal at house hill 2nd

Price was $32.51. We love this game. We've played it so many times, and every time is different. There are still so many haunts that we haven't experienced yet. The replay value of this game is outstanding. Very fun to get spooked out with friends on game night. The rules are not too complicated, so it's easy for those who are not as familiar with these types of games to get into. The interesting scenarios and unfolding story keeps everyone attentive. It's probably not a good game to play in a distracting environment, such as a large party or while a movie is playing, but it's engaging enough that no one is bored. Also, download the character sheet app in itunes and google play. It works a lot better than the little black clips that slide up and down the edges of the character cards.

This is one of my family's favorite games. We all love how the tension builds as more and more omens are revealed making the haunt more and more likely. Another great thing about this is that when the haunt is finally revealed, the tone and pacing of the game can change dramatically. Also, depending on what omen and room combo trigger the haunt, it is likely to be completely different than the last time you played. Components are solid (never did experience any warping of tiles as previously mentioned in other reviews) and replay-ability is outstanding. Love love love this game. Betrayal At House On The Hill - 2nd Edition Review (HAS266330000)

Betrayal at house on the hill is one of my favorite games. It combines an immersive theme, exploration, hidden traitors, and a twist every game. There are six characters that you can choose from and anywhere from three to six people can play, though i'd say five to six players is where the game really shines. At the beginning of the game, all the players start out in the foyer of the unexplored house on the hill, procedurally generating the rest of the house as they go. As they move around, they explore new rooms, which can trigger events, provide items, or revealing grim omens. Every omen revealed causes the player to have to roll against an ever increasing count. Failing this roll triggers "the haunt. " using the rule book, the players determine which of the 50 scenarios you'll play out for the rest of the game. Each scenario features different rules, usually pitting one player against the others. Often times the betrayer will get supernatural powers and the rest of the players will receive instructions on how they can defeat this ancient evil, supernatural force, or what have you. Once either the betrayer's or the rest of the players' victory conditions is met, the game ends and an epilogue wraps things up quite nicely. . This game really captures the b-movie horror/thriller/sci-fi vibe amazingly well! i love thematic games that immerse you in the game and allow you to create your own stories and betrayal at house on the hill definitely gives you those tools. The art and all of the components are great and add to the feel of the game. While the combat rules can be a little clunky at times and a few of the clips used to keep track of the various stats were a little loose and wouldn't stick, there is so much about this game to love, that i have to recommend it wholeheartedly! if you like co-op games, exploration, hidden traitor mechanics, or have ever wanted to play out an episode of scooby doo or a b-movie, do yourself a favor and check out betrayal at house on the hill! -H. Betrayal At House Hill 2nd Toy

Betrayal At House Hill 2ndBetrayal At House On The Hill - 2nd Edition (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

We've had a lot of fun with this game. Mechanics are pretty simple: you pick a character and "explore" an old house, by going through doorways to reveal new rooms. You then pick a new room tile from the stack of tiles and lay it out, connecting it to the doorway you just passed through. Most rooms have either an event, an item, or an omen in them. If so, your turn ends and you collect an event or item or omen card. These cards are fun and sometimes you get benefits, sometimes bad things happen to you. . Eventually, once enough omen cards have been selected, something called "the haunt" begins. At that point one of the players turns traitor! he or she then goes off and reads the haunt instructions from a booklet, while the remaining players read different haunt instructions from another booklet. Both players and traitor get instructions on how to win the game. This is totally cool. Sometimes your foe is a ghost, sometimes a mummy, sometimes it's the house itself seemingly come to life! the clock starts ticking then, as you have a certain number of turns to win by. . Just remember one thing: the rules are there to help, not to drive you nuts. If something is unclear you can ask in many online places (including here on online store) but remember to keep playing even when confused about a rule. Decide what you think the rule means and go for it! if you later on find out that you didn't do the rule correctly, just play it "right" the next time. Or stick to your own interpretation. It's a game, and it's fun. Enjoy! . . Now where did i leave my holy water.

Click to see NoticeBetrayal House On Hill - 2nd Edition (Avalon Hill)"Love! i am a big fan of spooky horror and zombie movies. I also like a good board game. I am somewhat of an newb to these types of games. This being the 3rd one i own. I started with forbidden island, then ticket to ride and now this. Yes, some of the cards are complicated and rather long, but i like the idea of exploring a creepy old house with surprises. We played this with my 13 year old daughter and it worked really well. . I would suggest watching some youtube video's of the game in play, to help take away some of the panic of the three manuals it comes with. This really helped to lessen my anxiety on learning this game from scratch. Once i had watched a few youtube videos, i felt quite a bit better on tackling such a game. (remember my newbness). . I had read some reviews critiquing the little markers falling off from the cards; however, i did not run into that, but could see it happening over time. Luckily, someone else has solved that problem with a handy app in the android app store, that does it for you, should you run into that issue. . I am looking forward to playing this game, at least the 50 times for the various scenarios one can play with. And will get the expansion pack that comes out next month. This really is worth the money!"

Dead of Winter Crossroads Game

Dead of winter: a crossroads game, the first game in this series, puts 2-5 players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game. Dead of winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition - but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests! dead of winter is an experience that can be accomplished only through the medium of tabletop games. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies and keep the colony's morale up. Dead of winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

The F.A.Q. for Betrayal House On Hill - 2nd Edition (Avalon Hill)

I bought this game a month ago and we just played it with family home for thanksgiving. I had misgivings at first as it is very complicated, with a myriad of different scenarios. We've only played this game a couple of times, but so far we love it! it takes some getting used to, as there are many, many rules and it can be difficult to keep tract of all of them at the same time! . . Love the dark and terrifying scenarios and the unexpected twists and turns the game can take. Probably better for older teens and adults, and up to six can play (but we have had as few as three) and still have a great time. . Basically, each character has four stats (might, speed, sanity, knowledge) that they need to keep up during the game to continue exploring, finding items, etc. Until an event called "the haunt" begins. Once the haunt begins, one of the characters becomes the "traitor", essentially the game is now the house + the traitor vs the heroes (everyone else playing). The heroes read a scenario from a one guide book, separate from than the traitor, in a separate room so that each team can develop a game plan. From there, the house and the traitor attempt to prevent the heroes from escaping or solving the mystery of the house , depending on the haunt presented. There many, many different haunt scenarios, and each one is really interesting, involving both the history of the house, and the history of the characters. Each character has a different perspective on the game, and it is never the same twice! . . We are big fans of board games. Settlers of catan is a favorite. This is more complicated and far more difficult to keep all the elements of the game in play but it is very interesting and the game plays out differently each time. The only issue i have is with the quality of the game pieces. The cardboard is nice and thick and will probably hold up well, but the markers that fit on each game card do not fit tightly. When they fall off during the game it is confusing as the markers are an integral part of the game and are essential to game play and character moving. Hopefully this flaw should be corrected in the next edition.

A number of questions have been asked here.

I've played this game about 4 times so far. It is my new favorite game. Since there are so many reviews about how the game works, i will just go over some of the things you can do to enhance your experience. First, watch the tabletop episode (on youtube) to get the hang of how the game works. Also, download a "betrayal at house on the hill" app so you can keep track of everyone's stat points. For the game i bought, summer 2015, most of the stat clips were just fine, but about 1 or 2 cards' worth were too loose, so we used the app to backup all the stat information. Then, download a spooky sound effect app. There are lots of them to choose from. I have the stat card app on my phone, and a spooky sound effect app on my kindle fire, so i can use both easily. The spooky sound effects really add atmosphere to the game. When you go into a new room, you can play a "creaky door" sound. If a card says you hear footsteps behind you, play that sound. It makes the game really fun. I also created a spooky music channel on pandora that i have playing through the pandora app on my phone. If we play at our house, we use our online store echo for the pandora music. It is all spooky - sounding classical music, and it feels like it's the soundtrack to this horror film of a game. One last thing you can do is make some spooky snacks. Do a search for halloween recipes, and you will find some. We make "bones:" a pretzel stick with a mini marshmallow at both ends, dipped in white chocolate. For a 2 player game, each of us controls 2 characters, then after the haunt, the traitor gives the other player control of the good guy. If you're playing with someone who is not a good reader, or if they just don't want to be the traitor, you can almost always switch and let another player be the traitor instead. This issue has not come up in our family yet, though. It's hard to play if you are trying to take care of a baby at the same time, or if you are distracted with something else going on in the house, but it is a lot of fun if you have time to really sit down and play it. Especially with the spooky soundtrack and spooky sound effects. This would be a fun game to play at halloween. It is also fun to make up voices for the different characters and personalities, too.

Best betrayal house on hill - 2nd edition (avalon hill) in review

This game is so much fun. I cannot recommend this game highly enough. If you like horror movies or general spooky stuff, this is definitely the game to get. It's essentially a cheesy horror movie in that it starts the same every time. A bunch of people exploring where they shouldn't go and then the twist happens. The twist in this game is when the haunt starts and one of the explorers is revealed to be a traitor. The mechanics stay the same, but the goal and certain rules change once the haunt begins, making it a different experience each time. There are 50 different haunts, each one very different. So, each time you play it is a different experience. Even if you play the same haunt again, unless you happen to get it twice in a row or very recently, it's unlikely that you'll remember all of the nuances of that haunt, and/or you will be on the other end of the betrayal. This is absolutely both my favorite game and both of my 11 year old daughters' favorite game. It is always fun.

The game itself is extremely fun, but dealing with the pieces is a chore. . Plenty have reviewed the game itself, so instead i'll note the construction issues. . The little sliders for your characters' stats are godawful and fall out constantly. My friends and i gave up and just started using a whiteboard to track everything until i find some kind of solution by bending the sliders or something. There are tons and tons of tiny tokens, but no real organizer for them and easily 90% of the tokens don't get used in a session. I, again, had to make my own organizer to handle these things so i didn't have to dig for five minutes to find a "skeletons" triangle or something. . Other than minor annoyances though, the game is pretty great for a fast pick up and has fairly long shelf life due to the inherit semi-random nature of it.

I. Rowe, Wyoming

My family is pretty much casual gamers- although we enjoy games like settlers and pandemic, we just don't seem to have the time or endurance to learn longer, more complex games. Being a big horror fan, i've been wanting to get this for years, but put it off for that reason. This year i broke down and got it, and we're been loving it. It's really not that hard, and is a lot of fun. My 11-yr-old daughter can't get enough of it, and takes the betrayal very seriously. The first part of the game is easy: just move through the house, exploring tiles and experiences minor challenges. Then the haunt is revealed: one of 50 random stories. Each of these plays like a slightly different game using the same rules as the first part. It's a lot of fun, and challenging.

T. April, Redbridge says

A couple things to note about this game:. 1. Your first play through will have you wondering about certain rules and certain situations (and take longer than you want). You may have to take to the internet to solve these, but it is worth it. 2. There are a lot of pieces. I would suggest having some ziplok bags, or other containers, to house these. They will get moved around and such in the box if you do not have them contained. 3. The character stat indicators are flimsy. There is an app you can grab that will help you manage your character better. I recommend it. 4. If you do not like long games with a few complex rules, this is not the game for you. . Game play phases:. 1. Exploration (15-30 min). This phase is for acquiring stats and items to use during the haunt phase. You also lay the map for the house. This can be a long or short phase depending on how fast you play, and how lucky your haunt rolls are. . 2. Haunt (5-60 min). I have not played all the haunt variations (there are quite a few, believe me - and more online if you want to try some). Some of the haunts are not great for fewer players, or can be better or worse based on how close or far you all travel together in the exploration phase. Some of these are timed events, and some of them can last a while. . Overall:. I like this game. This is not a game i would want to play over and over again in a day, but it is fun for some games with people that also like these types of games. I would recommend trying to get into the story a bit. Read the cards in a "ghost-story" voice, and try to react in ways your character would. I am not typically into cos-play or role-playing, but this makes it a bit more enjoyable imo. . Enjoy the game.

Wow, this game is like an rpg board-game based on every good horror movie ever made which also plays like a mystery (think of clue) with a very awesome plot twist that i'll explain in a bit. It reminds me a little of those "choose your own adventure" books that were so popular in the 80's except that you're competing with up to six players and the story possibilities are virtually unlimited which adds a serious creativity factor and makes for high re-playability value. . Now be aware there isn't a game-board in the conventional sense, rather there is a stack of fairly thick, and nicely-illustrated room tiles that will be connected to each other as player characters (each represented by a detailed miniature) explore one of three levels in a mysterious, old mansion. There are six playable characters to choose from and each also has a small information card (two-sided for dual personalities so really 12 choices) with attachable pointers to keep track of statistics such as "might", "speed" etc. Which dictate performance and add the element of character diversity. There are also a ton of events and omens which are triggered by entering certain rooms as well as usable items (including pets) which brings me to the "twist" i mentioned earlier. Basically every time a player draws one of the omen cards, he/she must perform a dice roll to see if they have triggered an event know as "the haunt". Fifty individual scenarios comprise this part of the game wherein one player (a. K. A. "the traitor") becomes insanely bent on taking out everyone else, employing any items they might have picked up along the way and basically joining forces with any monster npc's that may have been unleashed. . Sounds complicated? well it is at first, but my advice is to sit down with at least one other serious gamer and just play through while simultaneously learning the rules. No this isn't for the casual gamer but don't be intimidated; it just requires a little patience and some decent reading skills. Also, as i mentioned earlier, the game-board isn't the static, foldout variety (please see pics at top of this page) but rather expands dynamically with each game so try to play on something bigger than a card table if at all possible. As i've alluded to, this box contains detailed, quality pieces (no cheapness here) and well-developed rules and, at the writing of this review anyway, a pretty reasonable price to pay for hours and hours of serious, group gaming fun. . Please play this one on a dark, stormy night whenever possible. Good gaming! :o)

This board game is an absolute favorite of mine, and many people i play with. Since i've memorized all the rules, teaching it to people is an absolute breeze, especially since hand-holding is very easy to do in this game (until the haunt happens that is). The dynamic procedural generation of the game makes it incredibly replayable. Also the 50 different haunt scenarios always add a random feel to each playthrough. Unfortunately, after playing the game about 30 or so times, i've gotten this one specific haunt roughly 5 times and haven't experienced the other half of the haunts, so the randomness does have its downsides. Regardless, if i could buy expansions for this game, i would do it in a heartbeat. I play lots of board games, and whenever someone asks which i want to play, this one is always on my mind.

I gave the game a 5 star review because it's got it where it counts: fun factor. Here's my overall impression of the game. . *gameplay: 5 stars*. We all have a blast playing the game! just when the exploring starts to become dull, the game switches to a survival game where anything can happen. The random unpredictability keeps all of us on our toes. . *board pieces: 4 stars*. The board pieces aren't warped yet for our game, and i hope it never happens. The artwork is great and the sliding counters fit perfectly. The cards are high quality and fun. . *figurines: 2 stars*. These were the biggest disappointments for me. They are very low quality and the faces look warped and inhuman. It was hard for us to distinguish a few pieces apart because of their low quality. If i had a collection of other figurines, i'd be very tempted to use them. . *instruction manual: 3 stars*. Although they did a good job trying to explain the gameplay for a quirky, random game like this, our group was left with almost as many questions as we had answers. We looked up as much as we could, even searched online, but in the end had to come up with some reasonable house rules. . *replay-ability: 5 stars*. The random nature of the game means you'll be playing it a lot! . . As i said before, this game has got it where it counts. Even though it's not a perfect game by any means, it is so much fun i forgive it for its faults. Get it, play it a few times, enjoy it. That's what gaming is all about.

Let me begin by saying i love this game so much, by far definitely one of my favorite board games ever. That being said, there are some things about this board game a lot of people do not like. To begin it is not very strategic. If you are looking for just a game that is purely strategic and every decision matters to you winning or not, this is not your game. There are plenty of other games like that, just don't expect this game to be it. That being said, this game is loads of fun, and has a beautiful theme. It feels as if you are exploring a haunted house, and all of the haunts are well made.

Betrayal is one of my top favorite board games that i'm constantly trying to get my friends to play. It's a fun, challenging game that's really enjoyable with the right group of people. . It's an exploration/board building game with an eerie theme about it and a really unique mechanic. . Players begin by choosing a character - one of 12, each of which have their own set of stats. Then players enter the house, flipping cards to uncover rooms to build out the mansion. Rooms can contain special events, items (like weapons, armor, or occult paraphernalia), or omens. Which are bad. . Whenever an omen is found, the player that found it must roll the die and roll more than the number of omens that have currently been found. If a player fails to roll more than the number of omens, then the haunt begins. At this point, the instruction book is consulted which will tell you which haunt scenario to follow based on the conditions that caused it to occur. Usually one player is named the betrayer and is given their on set of instructions to follow (i suggest you make them leave the room) while the rest of the explorers plan their strategy to defeat them. . There are around 30 different scenarios you can play out, which means that you can play several different unique stories. The flavor text of all the cards is pretty entertaining, so things are best if everyone can get into it when they're reading to the group. . Overall it's a really fun game that can be enjoyed by both seasoned board gamers and beginners.

Love! i am a big fan of spooky horror and zombie movies. This really is worth the money!

An absolutely fun and terrific game to play, and a beautiful game set to behold! at first, this game is rather daunting with its numerous pieces, as well as the rather vague instructions. However after looking at gameplay videos, my friends and i were hooked immediately. The first half of the game involves constructing and exploring a spooky mansion, collecting items along the way. The second half involves escaping the house- this is the part where, depending on what scenario you active, requires both teamwork and quick thinking. There are some scenarios that feel one-sided; for example, without going into much detail about the scenario itself, since my group of friends used up all the ground and upper floor tiles but none of the basement ones, it was easier for us to get to our objectives than it was for the traitor to prevent it. . This is not a game for parties, but rather for long rainy days. If you and your friends are the type to talk about what you would do if you were in a horror movie, then this is the game for you.

I really enjoy this game; i've played it probably half a dozen times or so. I feel like reviews are easier if i break it down into pros and cons, so you can decide if this game is for you or not:. . Pros:. -lots of fun (yes i know that's an opinion). -games are completely different every time you play. - strategies are deep, and teamwork is a must. -you can find out which of your friends are sociopaths. . Cons:. -tons of pieces to keep track of (i've spent a lot of time digging for a 'secret stairs' token, or something similar). -complicated. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does kind of slow down the game when you have to pause to look up minion movement or something obscure. . All in all, i still think this is a great game, but if you and your friends are the kind of person that prefers a linear or straightforward game, this one might not be for you.

This game is really great. Someone in my gaming group has the 1st edition, so we were all really excited when we found out this was being reprinted. For those of you who have played the first edition, the gameplay is the same. Some rules have been clarified, and there is more text on some of the room tiles for ease of use. For those of you who haven't played: you should. You are a group of explorers going through a haunted house. Up to 6 people can play, and each of the 6 character cards has a front and a back, each with different stats to add variation. Other people have posted more on how the game works, so i won't go too much into it right now. This reprint added some new haunts, which is really fun. I haven't had a chance to play many of the new ones, but i did get to play one with hidden traitors, and i enjoyed it. Some of the haunts can also be unbalanced. I was the traitor for one haunt where i didn't get to do a single damage to any of the heroes. The next week, i was the traitor for the same haunt and i absolutely obliterated the heroes. It all depends on how the house is set up, and dice luck. My only complaint about this reprint is the quality of the components of this game. Something about the cardboard they used this time around just doesn't work. The first print had good, thick cardboard that felt high-quality. When i took this reprint out of the box, all of the cardboard components started to warp. The room tile stack can easily be compressed an inch or two because of this warping. Some people have prevented this by immediately placing the cardboard pieces under a book for a day or two after opening them, but i'm not sure if that works all of the time or not. Another component they didn't quite get right are the black plastic clips. In the first printing, they clips were too tight on the cardboard, and ended up scratching whatever part they were placed on. In the reprint, they are too loose. We have had some slide off completely because they are so loose they have no traction. The 5 spare clips can sometimes be enough to give you clips that fit on all the pieces you need, but it's not a guarantee. . The low quality of the pieces do detract from gameplay a little bit (when the room tiles slide under each other on the table, or your stat slider goes to the minimum and you die) but this is still a great game with a fun theme and lots of replayability. I would certainly recommend it, especially if they fix the game components. . Edit 2013:. As some have said in the comments, wizards of the coast is very good about replacing the cardboard in this game. I have had mine replaced through this process as well, and the replacements are great. While it is a hassle to have to request a replacement, it is well worth it and takes away the only deterrent to buying this game.
