Betrayal House On Hill: Widow’s Walk Board Game (Avalon Hill) 937

Review for betrayal house hill widows board

Price was $19.49. After all these years they made an expansion to betrayal at the house on the hill. I feel they should of made this one sooner. I have really enjoyed this playing this and it is a nice change to the game after all the years of playing the original game. I would tell anyone who likes the game to buy this it will offers more fun. I do wish they would of added a new character.

Betrayal at House on the Hill: Widow's Walk Board Game Review (C01410000)

My friends and i had a blast with this game. . They added just enough to expand on the main game without over-complicating it with strange sub-mechanics like other game expansions. Everyone was able to pick it up immediately without much explanation, and all of the additions were seen as improvements by my group. Nice way to make a great game even better. -K. Hannah

Definitely a hard game to play, especially with kids (10-13) because the haunts can be a bit confusing, especially since it's a different one each time, but so much fun to not know what you're going to be dealing with when the haunt happens!"

Betrayal At House On The Hill - 2nd Edition

Wow, this game is like an rpg board-game based on every good horror movie ever made which also plays like a mystery (think of clue) with a very awesome plot twist that i'll explain in a bit. It reminds me a little of those "choose your own adventure" books that were so popular in the 80's except that you're competing with up to six players and the story possibilities are virtually unlimited which adds a serious creativity factor and makes for high re-playability value. . Now be aware there isn't a game-board in the conventional sense, rather there is a stack of fairly thick, and nicely-illustrated room tiles that will be connected to each other as player characters (each represented by a detailed miniature) explore one of three levels in a mysterious, old mansion. There are six playable characters to choose from and each also has a small information card (two-sided for dual personalities so really 12 choices) with attachable pointers to keep track of statistics such as "might", "speed" etc. Which dictate performance and add the element of character diversity. There are also a ton of events and omens which are triggered by entering certain rooms as well as usable items (including pets) which brings me to the "twist" i mentioned earlier. Basically every time a player draws one of the omen cards, he/she must perform a dice roll to see if they have triggered an event know as "the haunt". Fifty individual scenarios comprise this part of the game wherein one player (a. K. A. "the traitor") becomes insanely bent on taking out everyone else, employing any items they might have picked up along the way and basically joining forces with any monster npc's that may have been unleashed. . Sounds complicated? well it is at first, but my advice is to sit down with at least one other serious gamer and just play through while simultaneously learning the rules. No this isn't for the casual gamer but don't be intimidated; it just requires a little patience and some decent reading skills. Also, as i mentioned earlier, the game-board isn't the static, foldout variety (please see pics at top of this page) but rather expands dynamically with each game so try to play on something bigger than a card table if at all possible. As i've alluded to, this box contains detailed, quality pieces (no cheapness here) and well-developed rules and, at the writing of this review anyway, a pretty reasonable price to pay for hours and hours of serious, group gaming fun. . Please play this one on a dark, stormy night whenever possible. Good gaming! :o)

Betrayal at house on the hill board game -2nd edition: take a deep breath before you enter. It might be your last. Your fear will grow with each tile you place as you investigate a house filled with dreadful monsters and deadly secrets. With 50 fiendish scenarios (including seven new haunts) and dozens of danger-filled rooms, you'll return to the house again and again - as often as you dare - and never face the same game twice. Contents include 1 rulebook, 2 haunt books, 44 room tiles, 1 entrance hall/foyer/grand staircase tile, 6 explorer figures, 6 two-sided character cards, 30 plastic clips, 8 dice, 1 turn/damage track, 80 cards (events, item, omen and more) and 149 tokens. We love this game. We've played it so many times, and every time is different. There are still so many haunts that we haven't experienced yet. The replay value of this game is outstanding. Very fun to get spooked out with friends on game night. The rules are not too complicated, so it's easy for those who are not as familiar with these types of games to get into. The interesting scenarios and unfolding story keeps everyone attentive. It's probably not a good game to play in a distracting environment, such as a large party or while a movie is playing, but it's engaging enough that no one is bored. Also, download the character sheet app in itunes and google play. It works a lot better than the little black clips that slide up and down the edges of the character cards. -Notice from N. This board game is an absolute favorite of mine, and many people i play with. Since i've memorized all the rules, teaching it to people is an absolute breeze, especially since hand-holding is very easy to do in this game (until the haunt happens that is). The dynamic procedural generation of the game makes it incredibly replayable. Also the 50 different haunt scenarios always add a random feel to each playthrough. Unfortunately, after playing the game about 30 or so times, i've gotten this one specific haunt roughly 5 times and haven't experienced the other half of the haunts, so the randomness does have its downsides. Regardless, if i could buy expansions for this game, i would do it in a heartbeat. I play lots of board games, and whenever someone asks which i want to play, this one is always on my mind.

- V. MatherlyBetrayal is one of my top favorite board games that i'm constantly trying to get my friends to play. It's a fun, challenging game that's really enjoyable with the right group of people. . It's an exploration/board building game with an eerie theme about it and a really unique mechanic. . Players begin by choosing a character - one of 12, each of which have their own set of stats. Then players enter the house, flipping cards to uncover rooms to build out the mansion. Rooms can contain special events, items (like weapons, armor, or occult paraphernalia), or omens. Which are bad. . Whenever an omen is found, the player that found it must roll the die and roll more than the number of omens that have currently been found. If a player fails to roll more than the number of omens, then the haunt begins. At this point, the instruction book is consulted which will tell you which haunt scenario to follow based on the conditions that caused it to occur. Usually one player is named the betrayer and is given their on set of instructions to follow (i suggest you make them leave the room) while the rest of the explorers plan their strategy to defeat them. . There are around 30 different scenarios you can play out, which means that you can play several different unique stories. The flavor text of all the cards is pretty entertaining, so things are best if everyone can get into it when they're reading to the group. . Overall it's a really fun game that can be enjoyed by both seasoned board gamers and beginners.

I've played this game about 4 times so far. It is my new favorite game. Since there are so many reviews about how the game works, i will just go over some of the things you can do to enhance your experience. First, watch the tabletop episode (on youtube) to get the hang of how the game works. Also, download a "betrayal at house on the hill" app so you can keep track of everyone's stat points. For the game i bought, summer 2015, most of the stat clips were just fine, but about 1 or 2 cards' worth were too loose, so we used the app to backup all the stat information. Then, download a spooky sound effect app. There are lots of them to choose from. I have the stat card app on my phone, and a spooky sound effect app on my kindle fire, so i can use both easily. The spooky sound effects really add atmosphere to the game. When you go into a new room, you can play a "creaky door" sound. If a card says you hear footsteps behind you, play that sound. It makes the game really fun. I also created a spooky music channel on pandora that i have playing through the pandora app on my phone. If we play at our house, we use our online store echo for the pandora music. It is all spooky - sounding classical music, and it feels like it's the soundtrack to this horror film of a game. One last thing you can do is make some spooky snacks. Do a search for halloween recipes, and you will find some. We make "bones:" a pretzel stick with a mini marshmallow at both ends, dipped in white chocolate. For a 2 player game, each of us controls 2 characters, then after the haunt, the traitor gives the other player control of the good guy. If you're playing with someone who is not a good reader, or if they just don't want to be the traitor, you can almost always switch and let another player be the traitor instead. This issue has not come up in our family yet, though. It's hard to play if you are trying to take care of a baby at the same time, or if you are distracted with something else going on in the house, but it is a lot of fun if you have time to really sit down and play it. Especially with the spooky soundtrack and spooky sound effects. This would be a fun game to play at halloween. It is also fun to make up voices for the different characters and personalities, too.

Dead of Winter Crossroads Game

What can i say? it really is that good. The only complaint i have is that the down time between turns can be rather long when/if players start to amass a lot of followers. Of course, being a cooperative game (traitor! ), you'll likely have a say in what others are doing and "down time" doesn't necessarily equate to "dead time" (ha! see how i did that? get it? dead? . Never mind. ). . My initial play through was with four players and it was kind of funny because we had to collect samples (recommended by the rules for first time players) and it started off pretty good. No one seemed to be trying to screw us over and we were all convinced that no traitor even existed. We were getting lucky and rolling well (to determine if we found samples on zombies we'd killed) up until the very end when suddenly we found we didn't have enough food. And our luck ran out on the rolls. Then several were bitten and started dropping like flies. . My only other complaint is in how to "win" the game. Basically, just surviving doesn't make you a winner (as a group). You have to survive and complete your secret mission. Don't complete both? you don't "win". Out of the four of us, we all did manage to survive but only one of is was able to also complete their secret mission and thus the winningest winner (the rest of us only winners in our own minds) walked away truly triumphant. . I guess that's not really a "complaint" as it didn't make the game "bad". It just made us realize that you have a lot to manage as a group and while some of us care about trying to feed survivors, take out the trash, keep the zombies at bay and just get through it all (! ) others are out to collect books or weapons. . Losers! . . Get the game, it really is fun.

Dead of winter: a crossroads game, the first game in this series, puts 2-5 players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. Each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game. Dead of winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. This means players are working together toward one common victory condition - but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. This secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. Work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests! dead of winter is an experience that can be accomplished only through the medium of tabletop games. It's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. The survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies and keep the colony's morale up. Dead of winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves.

Dead of winter does a wonderful job of translating a co-op zombie survival game to a table top experience. Ive currently played with my roommates about 4 times now and we have decided the best way to play this game is with 4 people, after experimenting with 3 and 4. The "action die" concept of doing actions with your survivors is a really cool system and adds a bit of strategical depth. The main thing that holds this game back is that i feel there is a bit too much luck involved with this game, it involves alot of dice rolls and one bad roll could ruin any chance you have of winning the game. The main co-op objective with the additional secret objectives that may or may not be a betrayal objective make this game unpredictable and incredibly fun. After 4 playthroughs with this game im convinced of the replay value and recommend any fan of the zombie genre, or of table top games add this gem to their collection. -Notice from N. A truly excellent game as long as you have a group of friends willing to wade through some of the nuanced rules. The irony was the initial breadth of paper standees and dice and game boards made people nervous about dead of winter, but after the basics were mastered in one session everyone just kept wanting to play it. No two scenarios are entirely the same and it's a fascinating mix of co-operative play and paranoia about who is doing what and for what sinister reason. This is a zombie game in which fighting zombies is a last resort and the real test is gathering supplies, surviving other survivors and accomplishing objectives, both those known to all and secret (sometimes traitorous) goals known only to yourself. This combines all the golden qualities of the battlestar game and other zombie games which focus exclusively on fighting but balances both out so it feels satisfying and useful to slay the undead but the focus of the game remains on making or breaking alliances. And yes you can exile people, but you'd better hope they're traitors or you might have lost valuable allies who could turn vengeful! . Some games claim to be 'storytelling' games but you don't get moreso than this. The crossroads cards, the unique looks to all the survivors and the different crisis scenarios give you all the fuel you need to invent all manner of personalized tales surrounding the diverse characters and their misadventures during a frigid apocalypse. This is complex but user friendly which indicates a studio who really did put this sucker through the play testing ringer until it ironed out all the kinks. Well worth it if you have a group of friends with broad imaginations who enjoy intrigue and the horror genre!

- O. FlorenceOh, dead of winter, how i love hate you! . . I'm huge on table top games and my biggest grip with some games are their package quality and game parts quality. This game is at the high end for me as far as the actual physical quality of the game. It's a strong nice sturdy box, great sturdy well made pieces and overall just a great well designed and thought out game. For those of you who have bought the newer of editions of catan only to discover the cheapest made box, the cheapest made game board, cheap everything, this game is the exact opposite. . As far as actual game play, this game is great. It takes awhile to set up and challenges you. I've played it about a dozen times now and it has been a different game each time, huge re-playability. This is a hard game, especially for us since we've only been able to play with two players and two player mode is hard. . This is for sure a top ten game for me now. If it's on your wish list i'd take the plunge and get it. So worth it.

Oh boy. This game is fairly difficult, but damn if it isn't a ton of fun. If you're like my group of friends you'll probably lose the first several games, but eventually the wins start coming in. Getting familiar with this game is part of the learning curve. While i do wish there were more objectives, characters, items, etc there is more than enough content here to last many games. My group has already played at least 20 games and we plan on playing many more. Well worth it if you like the zombie theme, or just want a mostly coop game that will put your ability to cope with things and survive to the test.

Coup The Dystopian Universe

I don't really grade games on artwork or durability. I just care about the game play, and this game is incredibly fun. I first played with three people and we laughed super hard while playing. It's a bluffing game, but you aren't actually betting, like in poker, so it's just pure fun and doesn't feel competitive. I've also played a bunch of two-player games and enjoyed that, too. I love the fact that a hand is so quick ( 5 minutes), so it's not a big commitment to start playing. You can just stop whenever. . When first learning, it may seem like there are a lot of rules, but after one evening it is easy to internalize them. Anyway, the game has a bunch of summary cards to hand out to players, and the cards themselves say what they can do. What makes the game so fun is that the cards have such incomparable powers, yet in the end it's pretty well balanced-whatever cards you start with can be a winning hand if you play it right, bluff at the right time, and aren't too unlucky about what the other player has. You can lie flagrantly and often get away with it, but when a ridiculous bluff is uncovered, it invariably cracks everybody up. Again, because no money is at stake and you typically play a bunch of independent hands in an evening without keeping score, it's just super light-hearted fun. . My friends and i now sometimes play coup with a regular deck of cards, too, just using 10, j, q, k, a of three suits for our 15 cards, so you don't really *need* the official game. But you should support the brilliant people who designed this game by buying the very reasonably priced original version. Plus with the official version you'll get to enjoy the playing cards that say what they do and the summary cards that help you learn the game and the special coup coins that feel more appropriate than poker chips.

In the not too distant future, the government is run for profit by a new "royal class" of multi-national ceos. Their greed and absolute control of the economy has reduced all but a privileged few to lives of poverty and desperation. Out of the oppressed masses rose the resistance, an underground organization focused on overthrowing these powerful rulers. The valiant efforts of the resistance have created discord, intrigue and weakness in the political courts of the noveau royal, bringing the government to brink of collapse. But for you, a powerful government official, this is your opportunity to manipulate, bribe and bluff your way into absolute power. To be successful, you must destroy the influence of your rivals and drive them into exile. In these turbulent times there is only room for one to survive.

I was skeptical about this game because i hate games like resistance and avalon, where a few people have special abilities but everyone else has nothing to do except solve the puzzle. I can't express how much i hate these games. But my husband had read about coup and wanted to give it a try, and for the price (online store was having a board-game sale), i couldn't refuse. . The premise is simple and it's very easy to teach new players. Every player has a role (two, in fact), and those roles can change depending on what happens. You can fake being any role, which is the whole point: fake out your opponents so they don't know who you are. Play is fast and simple; you can get through a few games in an hour. Everyone i played this with loved it and had a good time. I have no complaints and highly recommend this as a party game and an alternative to any others who think resistance is meh! -Notice from I. I bought this game to play while traveling with a group of 6 people. It is really hard to find a game that is compatible with 6 players and can travel well. While i think the ideal number is 3-4 players, this game worked out really well with the six. It also did not take up much space in my bag. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it isn't my favorite games genre; however, i have no regrets in buying it. . More details:. Just a quick overview of the game. It plays quickly - over in 15-20 minutes. It is a game mostly built around bluffing, calling bluffs, and eventually backstabbing (or not depending on how you play). Each player starts two character cards. You are out once you lose both cards. The last person standing wins. . The interesting aspect is that not only does each card type grant the player a special ability but that the cards are also flipped over. Since they are hidden from the other players, you can claim to use a power to which you don't have a right. Every turn a person has the right to challenge you. If you aren't using a ability granted by your cards, you lose a card. If the challenger is wrong, he loses a card. There are also other ways to attack and defend other players using a card's special ability. They seem pretty balanced. . Overall, it is a fast-paced game. You sort of get an idea how people like to play. Some bluff, some don't. You can also see some interesting natural alliances that form between people (one couple also supported each other, the other one did seemed to always attack each other). And because the games go quickly, you have a chance for revenge. . The gameplay is different with 6 players because the reserve deck is much smaller. Almost all the card types are out, and you can't switch out as well. So it makes it really hard to bluff and weakens some of the special abilities. It is still fun though

- Y. MableIf you're looking for a fun 2-6p (need to accomodate more than that - get more copies of the game or just add marked regular playing cards to it in sets) party game look no further! this game is the perfect warmup/warm-down game for family gatherings or casual hangouts. It is extremely easy to pick up and yet holds a surprisingly large amount of strategy. It's easy to learn, hard to master. . The box is tiny so it's portable and travels easily! the components of the game all fit into the box perfectly. Speaking of the components they are the cards, summary sheets, instructions booklet and tokens. . The card art is perfect and suits the game - definitely admirable even after hours of play. The tokens could've been better but do their job and are sturdy. . Summary: if you want to play a quick game that requires deduction and deception - this is your game. I can only say that playing with quiet/timid people will be slightly frustrating (if they don't talk much) but aside from that - it flows regardless.

Great game with high replay value. Friends always enjoy playing it. Interactive enough that the "most experienced" players will not always win. New players catch on within a round. Rounds last 5-10min, so players are not sitting idle when they're out for more than 5min. . Can be played by non-gamers and strategy gamers alike. Has worked fine at parties and with beverages involved. . Total game contents are less than you might expect. There's a bag of cardboard coins, a few rule reference sheets, a small instruction book, and 15 playing cards. That's all and there's quite a bit of empty space in the game box (which is fine, just be prepared). . Recommend picking up when it goes on sale.

The F.A.Q. for Betrayal House On Hill: Widow's Walk Board Game (Avalon Hill)

Fantastic expansion for my favorite game of all time. Component quality is almost identical to my copy of the base game (1st edition). After playing the core game hundreds of times, the expansion does a great job of adding some new mechanics while not sacrificing the feel of the original game. Play-ability is a bit stronger with more players than the core game due to the large game board. And thy finally added a bathroom!

A number of questions have been asked here.

(0) Question: Will u be able to still play the 50 haunts from the base game, and the 50 new haunts, or just the haunts from the expansion game?

(1) Question: Will this work with the first printing of betrayal (the red box)?

(2) Question: Will there be replacements for the sliders used on charactor cards? that was my only complaint with the base game and hopefully it has been addressed.

(3) Question: Can two people play this?

(4) Question: Will the expansion box be large enough to fit the original + the expansion or will i just have to have them in two separate boxes?

(5) Question: Will you be able to play without the original board game or is this an expansion on the first where you need the original?

(note) Question: where/how to get Avalon Hill (manufacturer's brand) accessories & similiar Avalon Hill's products

Love this expansion so far! so many unique new haunts to play and we haven't even gotten through them all yet. Betrayal at house on the hill is my favorite board game and i'm so happy they came out with this expansion. They got so many fantastic contributors to design 50 new haunts. The game already had great replay value, but now even more so! if you own the original game, you definitely should get this expansion!

I love the new expansion. More rooms, fantastic new haunts, interesting omens. The new mechanic of dumb-waiters is also really useful for anyone on a 5-6 room path away from the landings. The character tokens are also useful for remembering which room buffs we've already received. Though, they are very easily lost being so small. One of my favorite new cards is the "what year is it? " event card that causes either side to read the flavor text, thus giving the other side some advantage during the haunt. Of the new omens, box is the most amusing, cat is one of the most powerful. . The only downside is i may have to invest in a bigger table in order to play with a full group. The original game just barely fit on the table with all rooms played.

While this expansion adds some great new elements to the game, few of the haunts really capture the atmosphere (or balance) of the original game. Many of the haunts have vague or frustrating rules, and are not always balanced.

Pretty flawless improvement upon the original base set.

Wonderful expansion to an already great game! my favourite part about this expansion is how it adds variety/freedom to gameplay and makes it more exciting. . As a plus. We finally got bathroom

K. Patricia, Poole

One thing i was worried about an expansion for betrayal was that it'd make it too hard to get to the right room or uncover the right omen with a larger volume. Luckily the expansion has many built-in mechanics that prevents these issues while also doubling the number of haunts and adds some extra terrifying moments, like a nursery. Yeah. Anyways. I highly recommend it. It's very affordable and all the expansion pieces will fit in the original box with the base game so you don't need to carry around the expansion box if you don't want.

B. Rose, Hackney says

This expansion (meaning you cant play this with out the betrayal at the house on the hill set) adds new rooms and cards. No new characters. But there are some cool features to the new rooms that can change how you move through the house. Adds excitement and of course there is a bunch of new haunts! fun to play.

Amazing, fun game. This adds so much items, events, and omen cards, plus the roof/attic floor and 50 more"haunts"/scenarios to play. It was a very fun experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves board game and the original betrayal at the house on the hill. It really enhances the game experience.

Awesome expansion. The replayability in this game comes from the number of haunts- with this expansion now up to 100 possible scenarios that change the game, never play the same game twice. The betrayer and survivors do not know each others objectives. 20 new room tiles, and a new floor - the roof - also a handful of new item, omen and event cards. A few new game mechanics but easy enough to learn. Some rooms now have a dumbwaiter - spend 2 movement to get to a landing on a floor just above or below your current floor. For those rooms with once-per-game abilities, there are now a number or tokens for each character to leave behind and keep track of which ones are complete, no more just having to remember if you used that rooms ability or not. I found some of the new rooms pretty clever- for example the laundry: "if you end your turn here, you may discard an item card and draw an item card from the discard pile. " or the arsenal: "draw 2 item cards, choose 1 and discard the other. ". Excellent price point at only 20$ currently - (in a world where the mansions of madness expansions are 70$! ). . In short, this expansion adds plenty to the game without unnecessary complexity. 50 new haunts, new rooms to explore, new options while fleeing in terror from the traitor and the horrors of the house on the hill - can't go wrong.

E. Edna, Florida says

Parts are great, and the rules updates are clear and concise. The added "roof/attic" location and dumbwaiter rules add more fun to the base game. The only issue we've had so far is that some of the new scenarios are not as well-written or play tested as the old ones. We've had to write in house rules for 3 of 5 that we've played so far.

S. Carmen, Ohio

Fantastic expansion. This is he rare expansion which actually adds to the game without taking anything away. The game is played exactly the same, though 50 new haunts are possible in addition to the original 50. Moreover, somehow the boxed original i bought 3 years ago fits the entire expansion perfectly. No stuffing required. It's as if they new that far in advance how much room the expansion would require and planned accordingly. I can't wait to play more of this game.
