Dead Of Winter Crossroads Game (Plaid Hat Games) 936

Review for dead of winter crossroads game

Price was $47.17. Oh, dead of winter, how i love hate you! . . I'm huge on table top games and my biggest grip with some games are their package quality and game parts quality. This game is at the high end for me as far as the actual physical quality of the game. It's a strong nice sturdy box, great sturdy well made pieces and overall just a great well designed and thought out game. For those of you who have bought the newer of editions of catan only to discover the cheapest made box, the cheapest made game board, cheap everything, this game is the exact opposite. . As far as actual game play, this game is great. It takes awhile to set up and challenges you. I've played it about a dozen times now and it has been a different game each time, huge re-playability. This is a hard game, especially for us since we've only been able to play with two players and two player mode is hard. . This is for sure a top ten game for me now. If it's on your wish list i'd take the plunge and get it. So worth it.

Preface

This review is written by a ten year old boy. In my opinion, dead of winter is an extremely fun game. It is not a game that i would recommend young children try to play by themselves. There are a lot of pieces and the game rules can be complicated. If you have an adult that is familiar with the game who can help run it then it is a lot of fun. Something that i like about the game is that depending on how many cards you get if you have enough of a certain type of card you can have as many characters as you want. Each character has a special ability that you can do something with. The only downside to it is that if you make one mistake in setting up the game it can mess up the whole thing and as i mentioned before it does have a lot if pieces. But it is really fun! the box says it is for ages 13 and up but if you have an adult running the game then younger kids can play. My five year old brother and four year old cousin play it and enjoy it. Dead of Winter Crossroads Game Review (DOW01PHG)

My gaming group has played it two nights now - and they're asking to break it out again. Really amazing, considering how everyone has such large collections of games and some that haven't ever even been played. . As far as game play, this game is not easy to win. You aren't at any particular advantage being either an honest (relatively) colonist or the traitor. Thematically, it feels like we're playing through an episode of walking dead or living in the world of 28 days later. You and your group of players control different survivors, and each player has an over-arching goal of meeting the main goal without running out of morale or, as the traitor, you want the morale to hit 0 before the other players meet the main goal. In addition, each player has individual winning conditions on top of their main/traitor goal. . As a colony, you collect food and other resources, kill zombies, avoid crises that add extra requirements each round, and make choices based on "crossroads" - events with a trigger unbeknownst to the current turn's active player. This game is exciting, painful, and rewarding; it's enjoyable even when we lose. . Learning the game is a time investment, but worth it. -F. Evelyn

Toy(787799964347:Toys And Games), Dead Of Winter Crossroads Game (0787551967739:Plaid Hat Games), Dead of winter: a crossroads game, the first game in this series, puts 2-5 players in a small, weakened colony of survivors in a world where most of humanity is either dead or diseased, flesh-craving monsters. each player leads a faction of survivors with dozens of different characters in the game. dead of winter is a meta-cooperative psychological survival game. this means players are working together toward one common victory condition - but for each individual player to achieve victory, he must also complete his personal secret objective. this secret objective could relate to a psychological tick that's fairly harmless to most others in the colony, a dangerous obsession that could put the main objective at risk, a desire for sabotage of the main mission, or (worst of all) vengeance against the colony! certain games could end with all players winning, some winning and some losing, or all players losing. work toward the group's goal, but don't get walked all over by a loudmouth who's looking out only for his own interests! dead of winter is an experience that can be accomplished only through the medium of tabletop games. it's a story-centric game about surviving through a harsh winter in an apocalyptic world. the survivors are all dealing with their own psychological imperatives, but must still find a way to work together to fight off outside threats, resolve crises, find food and supplies and keep the colony's morale up. dead of winter has players making frequent, difficult, heavily- thematic, wildly-varying decisions that often have them deciding between what is best for the colony and what is best for themselves..

Dead Of Winter Crossroads GameDead of Winter Crossroads Game (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

A truly excellent game as long as you have a group of friends willing to wade through some of the nuanced rules. The irony was the initial breadth of paper standees and dice and game boards made people nervous about dead of winter, but after the basics were mastered in one session everyone just kept wanting to play it. No two scenarios are entirely the same and it's a fascinating mix of co-operative play and paranoia about who is doing what and for what sinister reason. This is a zombie game in which fighting zombies is a last resort and the real test is gathering supplies, surviving other survivors and accomplishing objectives, both those known to all and secret (sometimes traitorous) goals known only to yourself. This combines all the golden qualities of the battlestar game and other zombie games which focus exclusively on fighting but balances both out so it feels satisfying and useful to slay the undead but the focus of the game remains on making or breaking alliances. And yes you can exile people, but you'd better hope they're traitors or you might have lost valuable allies who could turn vengeful! . Some games claim to be 'storytelling' games but you don't get moreso than this. The crossroads cards, the unique looks to all the survivors and the different crisis scenarios give you all the fuel you need to invent all manner of personalized tales surrounding the diverse characters and their misadventures during a frigid apocalypse. This is complex but user friendly which indicates a studio who really did put this sucker through the play testing ringer until it ironed out all the kinks. Well worth it if you have a group of friends with broad imaginations who enjoy intrigue and the horror genre!

If you're like my group of friends you'll probably lose the first several games, but eventually the wins start coming in. Getting familiar with this game is part of the learning curve. While i do wish there were more objectives, characters, items, etc there is more than enough content here to last many games. My group has already played at least 20 games and we plan on playing many more. Well worth it if you like the zombie theme, or just want a mostly coop game that will put your ability to cope with things and survive to the test."

Blood Rage

In blood rage, each player controls their own viking clanÍs warriors, leader, and ship. Ragnar k has come, and itÍs the end of the world! itÍs the vikingsÍ last chance to go down in a blaze of glory and secure their place in valhalla at odinÍs side! for a viking there are many pathways to glory. You can invade and pillage the land for its rewards, crush your opponents in epic battles, fulfill quests, increase your clan's stats, or even die gloriously either in battle or from ragnar k, the ultimate inescapable doom. Most player strategies are guided by the cards drafted at the beginning of each of the three game rounds (or ages). These ñgodsÍ giftsî grant you numerous boons for your clan including: increased viking strength and devious battle strategies, upgrades to your clan, or even the aid of legendary creatures from norse mythology. They may also include various quests, from dominating specific provinces, to having lots of your vikings sent to valhalla. Most of these cards are aligned with one of the norse gods, hinting at the kind of strategy they support. For example, thor gives more glory for victory in battle, heimdall grants you foresight and surprises, tyr strengthens you in battle, while the trickster loki actually rewards you for losing battles, or punishes the winner. Players must choose their strategies carefully during the draft phase, but also be ready to adapt and react to their opponentsÍ strategies as the action phase unfolds. Battles are decided not only by the strength of the figures involved, but also by cards played in secret. By observing your opponentÍs actions and allegiances to specific gods, you may predict what card they are likely to play, and plan accordingly. Winning battles is not always the best course of action, as the right card can get you even more rewards by being crushed. The only losing strategy in blood rage is to shy away from battle and a glorious death!

Betrayal At House On The Hill - 2nd Edition

Wow, this game is like an rpg board-game based on every good horror movie ever made which also plays like a mystery (think of clue) with a very awesome plot twist that i'll explain in a bit. It reminds me a little of those "choose your own adventure" books that were so popular in the 80's except that you're competing with up to six players and the story possibilities are virtually unlimited which adds a serious creativity factor and makes for high re-playability value. . Now be aware there isn't a game-board in the conventional sense, rather there is a stack of fairly thick, and nicely-illustrated room tiles that will be connected to each other as player characters (each represented by a detailed miniature) explore one of three levels in a mysterious, old mansion. There are six playable characters to choose from and each also has a small information card (two-sided for dual personalities so really 12 choices) with attachable pointers to keep track of statistics such as "might", "speed" etc. Which dictate performance and add the element of character diversity. There are also a ton of events and omens which are triggered by entering certain rooms as well as usable items (including pets) which brings me to the "twist" i mentioned earlier. Basically every time a player draws one of the omen cards, he/she must perform a dice roll to see if they have triggered an event know as "the haunt". Fifty individual scenarios comprise this part of the game wherein one player (a. K. A. "the traitor") becomes insanely bent on taking out everyone else, employing any items they might have picked up along the way and basically joining forces with any monster npc's that may have been unleashed. . Sounds complicated? well it is at first, but my advice is to sit down with at least one other serious gamer and just play through while simultaneously learning the rules. No this isn't for the casual gamer but don't be intimidated; it just requires a little patience and some decent reading skills. Also, as i mentioned earlier, the game-board isn't the static, foldout variety (please see pics at top of this page) but rather expands dynamically with each game so try to play on something bigger than a card table if at all possible. As i've alluded to, this box contains detailed, quality pieces (no cheapness here) and well-developed rules and, at the writing of this review anyway, a pretty reasonable price to pay for hours and hours of serious, group gaming fun. . Please play this one on a dark, stormy night whenever possible. Good gaming! :o)

Betrayal at house on the hill board game -2nd edition: take a deep breath before you enter. It might be your last. Your fear will grow with each tile you place as you investigate a house filled with dreadful monsters and deadly secrets. With 50 fiendish scenarios (including seven new haunts) and dozens of danger-filled rooms, you'll return to the house again and again - as often as you dare - and never face the same game twice. Contents include 1 rulebook, 2 haunt books, 44 room tiles, 1 entrance hall/foyer/grand staircase tile, 6 explorer figures, 6 two-sided character cards, 30 plastic clips, 8 dice, 1 turn/damage track, 80 cards (events, item, omen and more) and 149 tokens. For 3 - 6 players, ages 12 and up

This board game is an absolute favorite of mine, and many people i play with. Since i've memorized all the rules, teaching it to people is an absolute breeze, especially since hand-holding is very easy to do in this game (until the haunt happens that is). The dynamic procedural generation of the game makes it incredibly replayable. Also the 50 different haunt scenarios always add a random feel to each playthrough. Unfortunately, after playing the game about 30 or so times, i've gotten this one specific haunt roughly 5 times and haven't experienced the other half of the haunts, so the randomness does have its downsides. Regardless, if i could buy expansions for this game, i would do it in a heartbeat. I play lots of board games, and whenever someone asks which i want to play, this one is always on my mind. -Notice from C. Zelda, Pennsylvania

I bought this game a month ago and we just played it with family home for thanksgiving. I had misgivings at first as it is very complicated, with a myriad of different scenarios. We've only played this game a couple of times, but so far we love it! it takes some getting used to, as there are many, many rules and it can be difficult to keep tract of all of them at the same time! . . Love the dark and terrifying scenarios and the unexpected twists and turns the game can take. Probably better for older teens and adults, and up to six can play (but we have had as few as three) and still have a great time. . Basically, each character has four stats (might, speed, sanity, knowledge) that they need to keep up during the game to continue exploring, finding items, etc. Until an event called "the haunt" begins. Once the haunt begins, one of the characters becomes the "traitor", essentially the game is now the house + the traitor vs the heroes (everyone else playing). The heroes read a scenario from a one guide book, separate from than the traitor, in a separate room so that each team can develop a game plan. From there, the house and the traitor attempt to prevent the heroes from escaping or solving the mystery of the house , depending on the haunt presented. There many, many different haunt scenarios, and each one is really interesting, involving both the history of the house, and the history of the characters. Each character has a different perspective on the game, and it is never the same twice! . . We are big fans of board games. Settlers of catan is a favorite. This is more complicated and far more difficult to keep all the elements of the game in play but it is very interesting and the game plays out differently each time. The only issue i have is with the quality of the game pieces. The cardboard is nice and thick and will probably hold up well, but the markers that fit on each game card do not fit tightly. When they fall off during the game it is confusing as the markers are an integral part of the game and are essential to game play and character moving. Hopefully this flaw should be corrected in the next edition.

Betrayal-house-on-hill---2nd-edition-(avalon-hill) set picture

- W. MargaretLet me begin by saying i love this game so much, by far definitely one of my favorite board games ever. That being said, there are some things about this board game a lot of people do not like. To begin it is not very strategic. If you are looking for just a game that is purely strategic and every decision matters to you winning or not, this is not your game. There are plenty of other games like that, just don't expect this game to be it. That being said, this game is loads of fun, and has a beautiful theme. It feels as if you are exploring a haunted house, and all of the haunts are well made.

This game is really great. Someone in my gaming group has the 1st edition, so we were all really excited when we found out this was being reprinted. For those of you who have played the first edition, the gameplay is the same. Some rules have been clarified, and there is more text on some of the room tiles for ease of use. For those of you who haven't played: you should. You are a group of explorers going through a haunted house. Up to 6 people can play, and each of the 6 character cards has a front and a back, each with different stats to add variation. Other people have posted more on how the game works, so i won't go too much into it right now. This reprint added some new haunts, which is really fun. I haven't had a chance to play many of the new ones, but i did get to play one with hidden traitors, and i enjoyed it. Some of the haunts can also be unbalanced. I was the traitor for one haunt where i didn't get to do a single damage to any of the heroes. The next week, i was the traitor for the same haunt and i absolutely obliterated the heroes. It all depends on how the house is set up, and dice luck. My only complaint about this reprint is the quality of the components of this game. Something about the cardboard they used this time around just doesn't work. The first print had good, thick cardboard that felt high-quality. When i took this reprint out of the box, all of the cardboard components started to warp. The room tile stack can easily be compressed an inch or two because of this warping. Some people have prevented this by immediately placing the cardboard pieces under a book for a day or two after opening them, but i'm not sure if that works all of the time or not. Another component they didn't quite get right are the black plastic clips. In the first printing, they clips were too tight on the cardboard, and ended up scratching whatever part they were placed on. In the reprint, they are too loose. We have had some slide off completely because they are so loose they have no traction. The 5 spare clips can sometimes be enough to give you clips that fit on all the pieces you need, but it's not a guarantee. . The low quality of the pieces do detract from gameplay a little bit (when the room tiles slide under each other on the table, or your stat slider goes to the minimum and you die) but this is still a great game with a fun theme and lots of replayability. I would certainly recommend it, especially if they fix the game components. . Edit 2013:. As some have said in the comments, wizards of the coast is very good about replacing the cardboard in this game. I have had mine replaced through this process as well, and the replacements are great. While it is a hassle to have to request a replacement, it is well worth it and takes away the only deterrent to buying this game.

The F.A.Q. for Dead Of Winter Crossroads Game (Plaid Hat Games)

Dead of winter does a wonderful job of translating a co-op zombie survival game to a table top experience. Ive currently played with my roommates about 4 times now and we have decided the best way to play this game is with 4 people, after experimenting with 3 and 4. The "action die" concept of doing actions with your survivors is a really cool system and adds a bit of strategical depth. The main thing that holds this game back is that i feel there is a bit too much luck involved with this game, it involves alot of dice rolls and one bad roll could ruin any chance you have of winning the game. The main co-op objective with the additional secret objectives that may or may not be a betrayal objective make this game unpredictable and incredibly fun. After 4 playthroughs with this game im convinced of the replay value and recommend any fan of the zombie genre, or of table top games add this gem to their collection.

A number of questions have been asked here.

(2) Question: A quick question, i see that 2 players can play this game. i'm curious, how is it with 2 players? i've only seen groups of 4 to 5 play.

(3) Question: I like to keep all my cards in clear protective sleeves. what are the dimensions on the playing cards?

(4) Question: Does the game box come with storage for the pieces?

(5) Question: Why is the game age listed as 13 and up? is it due to the difficulty level or because it's rated pg-13?

(6) Question: Can you play with six players?

(7) Question: Seems a lot like "last night on earth. " since we have that one, is it worth the high price for this one?

(8) Question: New to this type of gaming. what is a good, no great, introduction game that's not too complicated.

(9) Question: Where the characters changed? not what i saw on tabletop on geek & sundry, on you tube. i'm asuming that this is supposed to be the first game.

Lots of pieces and prep but a very tense, fun and entertaining game for a mature (not just the 'age' reference; i've gamed with many kids more mature than many "adults") audience. . Pros. - optional &/or chance traitor mechanic. - competitive co-op. . Cons. - might ruin real life relationships. - should really only play if you and your friends are in the mood to abuse & punish yourselves. . Things to know going in. - lots of pieces. - 5 to 10 min prep time (much greater if you don't sort and put things back in an organized manner) with experience players. - a very bleak setting (quite obvious from the game's premise), that is a fun and enjoyable experience by making 'less tragic' events feel like a triumphant victory. - you may want to pre-schedule some therapy sessions for post game recovey

What can i say? it really is that good. The only complaint i have is that the down time between turns can be rather long when/if players start to amass a lot of followers. Of course, being a cooperative game (traitor! ), you'll likely have a say in what others are doing and "down time" doesn't necessarily equate to "dead time" (ha! see how i did that? get it? dead? . Never mind. ). . My initial play through was with four players and it was kind of funny because we had to collect samples (recommended by the rules for first time players) and it started off pretty good. No one seemed to be trying to screw us over and we were all convinced that no traitor even existed. We were getting lucky and rolling well (to determine if we found samples on zombies we'd killed) up until the very end when suddenly we found we didn't have enough food. And our luck ran out on the rolls. Then several were bitten and started dropping like flies. . My only other complaint is in how to "win" the game. Basically, just surviving doesn't make you a winner (as a group). You have to survive and complete your secret mission. Don't complete both? you don't "win". Out of the four of us, we all did manage to survive but only one of is was able to also complete their secret mission and thus the winningest winner (the rest of us only winners in our own minds) walked away truly triumphant. . I guess that's not really a "complaint" as it didn't make the game "bad". It just made us realize that you have a lot to manage as a group and while some of us care about trying to feed survivors, take out the trash, keep the zombies at bay and just get through it all (! ) others are out to collect books or weapons. . Losers! . . Get the game, it really is fun.

Ok so let me start out by saying this game is so freaking cool. I collect a lot of different types of games and up to recently focused mainly on more traditional games. This is one of those games that i was not sure about but i saw on a show called tabletop and decided that i would like to have a go at it. I would have to say when i opened the box my mouth dropped open at the amount of pieces included in the game. It was almost a little bit overwhelming but after i started reading the rules and playing a test session i felt pretty comfortable with it. The first time we played it took about an hour because we had a lot of stopping and reading going on. After that we played and our time decreased a lot but that is because we died. I played with group of 4 for the first time and was a traitor which i will have to admit was hard at first but as i kept playing i sortof slipped into the role nice and easy. Which is a little scary but overall it was a fun experience. The end of the game was especially fun when i got the opportunity to reveal who i was. The look on my friends faces were priceless/hilarious. If you are looking for a good game to get into i would recommend this one. My overall scores for this game are below. . Age range: 12+. Set-up difficulty: first time hard after first time it gets easier. In-game difficulty: the game has different difficulty levels you can pick from. Fun factor: 5 stars. Replay value: high. Time: plan to spend a little while playing. My overall score: 6 stars out of 5 (that means i really like it)

Awesome game. There is a bit of a learning curve but if you watch "how to play" videos or other people playing it you can get a hang of it faster. The crossroad cards give a sense of randomness which adds more dimension to the game. There are plenty of characters each with different abilities and and skill levels. It has a storytelling element with each crisis that happens. Everyone has to work together to fend off the crisises but then they also have their own agenda they need to complete. There is also a possibility of a traitor so you have to be careful who you trust. The game is very satisfying to win but even if you don't you can take it as experience and it makes you want to play again.

I can't say anything that other reviewers haven't said already, but that sure isn't going to stop me from pontificating anyway. Here are the takeaway points: this game is cooler than you think it is. It is not overly complicated and play becomes smooth after a few turns. It isn't fast paced, but it is engaging. It will turn a group of friends into a suspicious gaggle of backstabbers by the time the round tracker hits 2. It converted 2 anti-board game friends into full-on survivors. . If you want something more along the lines of tactical zombie massacre go with a different game (maybe zombicide), if you want something more like night of the living dead, go with last night on earth. Dead of winter is more like season 3 or 4 walking dead, and is more about crisis management and strategy than killing zombies, though there are still plenty of opportunities to do so. Seriously, just look at the ratings. This isn't a lark. Just buy it already.

Absolutely love this game. Granted it was a little tricky to learn at first but once we figured out the rules we were able to teach our friends pretty quickly. You definitely need a big table for this, at least a 3 by 6 for 3 or more players (see picture, table is definitely not large enough). The three of us played without the betrayal cards at first just to get used to the game play. . Pros: zombies. Critical and strategic thinking for yourself and with/for your friends. It's not based on chance though there are times a move could be because of a crossroads card. I really wondered why the game was so much money, there's so much thought and story put into this game and that's my opinion as to why. Really keeps you engaged. . Cons: if you've never played a board game like this, you will get impatient with the instructions. The video really didn't help either. My two friends did the reading and figuring out and then taught me after. It's much easier to start the game and learn as you go rather than sit there and try to read the manual before playing.

This is a truly board game. If you have the time and patience to play it. With almost 100 or so pieces to set up and use, it can be a chose to set up, but it's well worth it. This meta co-op board game is great fun and is plenty of challenge for those who like to dedicate themselves to board games. In a post apocalyptic era where zombies are abundant, food, medicine and weapons are scarce, you truly need to strategize to pull resources and efforts to keeping your colony alive, completing crisis cards, and at the same time fulfilling your own secret object. Definitely worth a buy. But also, i'd recommend watching the youtube how-to video rather than reading the instruction manuals, and/or watching the tv series table-top (available on youtube) on how game play goes. Definitely helps get a good idea of what to expect.

K. Russell, Saskatchewan

This is a great game! i recommend watching videos online to help you understand how to play. The game lets you make decisions as a group on how to keep your colony alive. You can choose to kill zombies, collect food or search for supplies. It's as if you were inside your own zombie movie. The game has 18 main game scenarios along with personal goals and a goal for each round. Anyone in your party can be a friend or foe. This is a role playing strategy game. In our experience the game takes a lot longer than an hour and half to complete. That's not necessarily a bad thing though. Also the came can be adjusted to different difficulty levels by playing different scenarios and leaving out certain decks of cards.
