Review for dji phantom professional quadcopter camera

Price was $799.00. (originally a 4-star rating). By reading many of the reviews, i have gathered that it s possible you will get a defective unit or battery right off the bat and will need to send in for service. If that happens to you, my advice would be to send right back to online store. . From everything i ve read here and elsewhere, dji has extremely poor customer service. . If you have a malfunction of some kind after you are no longer able to send it back to online store, you will have to send it to dji for work within the one year warranty, and you need to realize this could be a two month process. That s not much of a warranty, but that s the way it is in this case. It would almost be preferable to send it to a non-dji repair shop and pay to have it repaired. . The negative possibilities (according to many reviews):. Possibility of receiving a defective unit. A defect discovered after online store guarantee period ends. The drone flies away on it s on and possibly causes damage to someone s property or person in addition to itself. Having to wait 6-8 weeks to get your drone back from the shop (you may have to look at it as not having a warranty at all). You have to spend an hour (or two) when you get it charging the batteries and updating the firmware. This can be a little tricky but you can handle it. There s help available on youtube if you need it. . I m giving one star off an otherwise awesome piece of equipment for these reasons. . This is a lot to ask, but if you can live with the possibility of those things happening, then i would say make the purchase. Also, the realistic costs are more like:. . Phantom 3 professional $1, 259. Extra battery $149. Carry case $100-$200. Memory cards and misc parts you better allow $50 - $100 per month if you use it often (and you will). Repairs after two weeks, i crashed mine and the repair took 4 weeks and $220. Don t buy this thinking you will never crash it. Spare drone i seriously considered buying a spare when i sent mine off for repairs. I missed it that much. It s best if you have a real nice computer or hd tv to view the photos. You must have a smart phone or tablet to use the software and remote control. Remember that. . Parts are available. If you are a do it yourself type of person, i would say that you especially are suited well for the phantom 3 professional. There is a lot of help available online to make repairs. If you re not a do it yourself (like me), i would recommend that you find a repair shop ahead of time, and if you re lucky enough to have one nearby, go meet them in advance and consider buying your drone there. They may give repair preference to someone who buys from them and you will certainly want to use them for advice here and there. Also you can go to and the users there are very friendly and full of good advice. . If you only have the price of the drone to invest, you may be frustrated using and maintaining your drone after your purchase. . I think this hobby is like a musical instrument. A lot of practice, studying, and an ongoing investment. It is going to cost you more than the initial purchase price. . Now the good part:. Its pretty easy to learn the basics. Very exciting to fly. The pictures and video are great. If you re already into photography, you are going to love this. As of 9/7/15 there is a firmware update that gives the drone new photographic capabilities. I have experimented with these settings, they are very exciting and i am looking forward to the challenge of getting great photos and videos. . One piece of advice: learn how to kill the motor if something goes wrong (like a crash causes it to land upside down and revved up to 90 million rpm s. ). This is done with a two-stick maneuver to lower opposite side corners. . The bottom line is this: the phantom 3 professional is expensive. More than the initial purchase alone and there isn t much of a warranty. It s a delicate instrument and you will crash it and that will cost money. It s possible that you will get a defective unit. If you can live with these facts and uncertainties, and you can afford it, go ahead and buy it. I have really enjoyed using mine and i have some awesome photos and videos. Don t buy it if the initial purchase price is all you can afford or if you have no time for learning. You will be disappointed. . I love my phantom 3 professional. Get one. . Update:. Oct. 20, 2015 - i purchased my second phantom 3 professional today. I'm having such a good time with the first one, i want to have a backup. . Update:. Nov. 20, 2015 - my first phantom 3 professional is not holding the altitude consistently. This was noticed after a paid repair at a third party repair facility because i crashed the drone and destroyed the outer shell. I contacted dji support (on their web form) about the altitude problem and was contacted the same day and given a shipping label. It left my office on nov. 9, 2015 and was back in my hands on nov. 18, 2015. Nine days including shipping. I tested it out and the problem was corrected. They paid for fedex both ways and warrantied the repair. I think dji has made some changes and the reports im seeing on is that other pilots are agreeing the customer service and repair time is getting better. Ive now upgraded my rating from 4-stars to 5. For me it has been a completely positive experience.

Introduction

The best phantom so far. I've had the phantom 1, phantom 2, phantom 2 vision + and now the phantom 3, and this by far beats them all when it comes to features, stability, photo and video quality, and flight time/characteristics. . * if you were lucky enough to buy one of the previous batches with firmware 1. 1. 8 do not update firmware at all, and if you got one with firmware 1. 1. 9, do not update firmware to 1. 2. 6 no matter what you do. 1. 1. 8 is the best to be on, 1. 1. 9 is ok since you can't go back, 1. 2. 6 is horrible and breaks functionalities and makes flying safely a problem. I will explain later don't worry if you get the warning that you have to update firmware, it'll work fine even if you don't, it'll just complain. It won't force you to update firmware. Do not update until dji gives you a way to roll back to the previous firmware version, supposedly they have said they're going to do that. *. . Things that are improved over previous phantoms models:. - camera. - gimbal. - app. - gps lock time and number of satellites used to tell position. - gps hold. - position hold using vision positioning system (vps), new on this phantom model from the previous phantoms, also used on inspire 1. - range. - video preview quality (720p hd). - flight time (about 22 minutes). - more powerful motors. - much more stable during yaw / spin during hover. - video and rc both use 2. 4ghz, no need to deal with 5. 8ghz for control like on the p2v+, which caused the rc control to drop out way before video. . Things that got worse compared to previous phantom models:. - maximum altitude agl limit cannot be removed in app, although no one needs or should ever go above 400 ft, it still shouldn't be added by force. - constant firmware check / complains about not being up-to-date, even if it works just fine, never had this problem with p2v+ or p2. - proprietary dji battery even more expensive than the p2/p2v+ batteries. - motors and battery get really hot during flight. - unable to choose any 2. 4ghz other than between channel 13 through 20 for image preview transmission. - no ability to record 1080p or 720p at 120 fps. . The phantom 3 no longer uses wi-fi or a wi-fi range extender, it uses 2. 4ghz band with digital modulation, and has a solid cable connection to your tab or phone so it won't keep losing connections. It uses the dji lightbridge (hd video down-link and rc control both in the same radio module). It has very crisp video, and control link does not usually go out at all, not within a reasonable distance. Firmware version 1. 1. 8 has the best video down-link. On firmware 1. 1. 9 and 1. 2. 6 dji messed something up with the video encoding in the gimbal unit, so the app struggles to decode the video on your tab/phone, and the video constantly drops, blacks out or freezes. 1. 2. 6 is even worse. The tab/phone overheats while decoding video, and their solution was to shut down all other processes on your tablet or keep its processor cool, not really feasible! i would recommend for dji just to downgrade the functionality back to whatever worked so well on firmware 1. 1. 8. . It has been known that some people have got about 3 miles of range on a stock phantom 3 pro and controller. Supposedly the phantom 3's on firmware 1. 1. 8 and 1. 1. 9 have amazing range. Supposedly firmware 1. 2. 6 reduces rc range, and rc drops out and complains about "unstable rc control channel". This hasn't been confirmed 100% yet, but a lot of owners complain about reduced range after updating to 1. 2. 6. Again, do not update firmware if you haven't yet. . The gimbal and camera on phantom 3 are amazing. You cannot tell that it's a moving camera platform, there is no fish-eye, the resolution is amazing, and it is stunning in 4k resolution, the images are so crisp you feel like you can touch the trees or count the blades of grass! the only negative things about it are dji's codec for coding the 4k images, and the bit rate is very poor for what it should be at that resolution, but it produces some nice videos either in 1080p 60fps or 4k 24fps. If you don't have very new macbook pro , leave the video recording at 1080p 60fps max, otherwise you will get very choppy video playback at 4k, unless you are going to post-process it, in which case you will get better resolution once you transcode it into 1080p later. . The vision positioning system (vps) uses a camera and sonar to tell position when it's close to the ground. At 10 ft of altitude or below, it holds position down to a few inches accuracy, above about 10 ft it uses gps for position hold. Vps also allows you to hold position when flying indoor or when you have no gps fix. Be careful when using only vps, because it won't hold position if the phantom is above about 10 ft. Firmware 1. 2. 6 breaks the vps functionality and makes it non-functional. Do not update firmware. Dji's solution to this is to turn off the vps in the app to avoid getting complaints from the app. . Also, when flying up and then back down, firmware 1. 2. 6 creates a hysteresis effect in the barometric pressure altitude that gives you the altitude reading once the vps (sonar) can no longer tell altitude above 10 ft. So when you start it up, your baro altitude reads approximately zero ft, if you climb then descend back to zero, the baro altitude reads about 20-40 ft. This does not seem to occur with firmware 1. 1. 8 or 1. 1. 9. This issue can be very dangerous for rth if you lose rc control, and it has been known that some phantom 3 pro's running 1. 2. 6 just suddenly turn the motors off and drop 20-40 ft in the air. This could be a catastrophic disaster if you are below 40 ft or not high enough so that the fall can be stopped on time. It is a safety hazard for the phantom and everyone around it. Again, do not update firmware to 1. 2. 6. This cannot be stressed enough. . The phantom 3 is a great quadcopter. You can probably not get a better one with more features out of the box. If you're wondering whether to get one or not, definitely go for it. If you're new to multirotors, get a small walkera ladybird or blade nano to practice and learn, then get a phantom 3 once you know how to control them safely. . There's no question about how good and well designed the phantom 3 is! dji's customer service, however, is not as good. For those who have problems, either by the firmware update or by problems with their individual phantom 3, their only suggestions for solutions is "calibrate the imu (sensors), the gimbal and wait long enough to get good gps lock", dji will not acknowledge or confirm any problems, and keeps telling everyone the same thing. If you have an actual problem or anything that needs repair, their turn-around time is horrible, so if you get one, check everything, do not update your firmware, and if anything is wrong return to your vendor in the first few days and avoid warranty repairs, it'll take forever to get it back. Like usual, the multicopter is great, the customer service and manufacturer communication are horrible. DJI Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4K UHD Video Camera Drone Review (CP.PT.000181)

This is without a doubt the best drone that money can buy. Video is amazing, photos are amazing. Cant recommend enough. . Lets get right to the most important info for a lot of people. *max altitude (tested & confirmed) - approx 1, 640 feet (software limits this to the maximum - still provides a max signal on video and controls). *max distance (tested & confirmed) - approx 12, 000 feet (2. 2 miles with a clear line of sight and no interference - still provides good video and complete control. At this distance a little movement of the antennas can cause video to drop out). . A note on range. -wifi, cell towers, transformers, power lines etc. Can cause interference and affect range. -range is dependent on the controller having a clear line to the aircraft. If trees/buildings/mountains get in the way, you will loose signal strength pretty quick. . Also. *read the manual, learn to fly safely, obey laws & be careful* there are infinite ways to loose/destroy/crash your drone, be careful and don't. -J. Morgan

Photography(190021000018:Camcorder), Dji Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4k Uhd Video Camera Drone (0604697257909:Dji), The phantom 3 professional continues the proud tradition of dji's phantom series and brings several important innovations to the phantom's rich feature set. the phantom 3 professional carries a fully stabilized 3-axis 4k uhd video camera for smooth, crisp videos and still photos. to allow you to see what the drone sees, dji has engineered a new generation of their lightbridge technology that allows 720p hd digital streaming of live video directly from the drone. you can control the camera and see video in real time as you fly and you can even share the video using the dji pilot app's advanced features. to aid indoor flying, the phantom 3 professional includes an integrated array of optical and ultrasonic sensors call vision positioning that allows you to fly precisely indoors without a gps signal. the phantom 3 professional includes all the tried-and-true features you'd expect from a dji drone, including gps navigation with auto takeoffs and auto landings, intelligent high power flight battery, a built-in safety database of no fly zones, and a powerful mobile app for your ios or android device. note: dji has locked your phantom from being able to even start the motor if you live within a 15 mile radius of the white house. this encompasses not only d. c. but much of prince georges county, arlington, fairfax, silver spring, falls church and montgomery county. dji does not warn you of this prior to purchase. outside of this 15 mile radius, the drone works great, but be aware, that if you bought it and live within the restricted zone, you will not be able to fly it, even on your own property..

There is a lot to love about these quads. The tech that's packed into them, makes it a great time to be an adult kid. . My only gripes are that setting waypoints is awful. You have to manually fly to each point, which takes precious flight time off your battery. Aftermarket software is available to allow you to draw your waypoints on a map, but it doesn't come cheap $25, also only available for ios, last time i checked. . Second gripe is due to a recent update. The quad simply refuses to take off, if the battery is under 59 . I understand not wanting the battery to freeze before flight, but it needs to literally be 60 or higher? minor nuisance i suppose, as long as you know this and plan ahead.

Click to see NoticeDji Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4k Uhd Video Camera Drone (CP.PT.000181)"This thing is a highly sophisticated and advanced piece of aeronautics technology. It is not a toy. The firmware and remote controller requires updating before operation. That consists of downloading the zip file from the dji website, loading them onto the micro sd card, and inserting it into the micro sd slot on the gimbal. After that it's pretty automatic. First flight: do not fly indoors for the first flight. Attitude mode means it relies solely on the vps sensors and does not have gps guidance. In which case the bird can get a little squirrelly and takes practice and experience with the controls to know how to maneuver without gps. To stop the motor when landing, either initiate the return to home function (in which case the drone will land itself) or put the sticks both down and inward for an instantaneous canceling of the motors, or put the left stick down for 2 seconds and the propellers will stop. The camera on the phantom 3 professional is extraordinary. The gimbal is magic. The performance and maneuverability is by far the best in it's class. It stops and turns on a dime. It climbs and soars like a champ, even thru wind. You can download the photos and video files (1080p) straight to your phone at full res thru the dji go app. The go app is also very advanced and fully covers all controls with satisfying modification/customization options. An amazing and outstanding piece of technology. I had no problems or issues with my phantom 3 pro thus far. It's as tight as a drum and flies like a champ. An extra battery and hardshell travel case is a must. *update 5/4/16* i had my first drone crash. I was doing follow me mode in my jeep while driving and controlling the drone at the same time (stupid idea) and my altitude was only set at 35feet (stupider idea) and while driving i took my eyes off the screen and expected the drone to do its thing since i have tested the follow me mode and it works nicely. Anyway the drone ran into the top of an oak tree while filming and fell onto an old road, mostly ancient asphalt and it was a pothole area with mostly dirt and gravel, so it fell upside down onto the dirt/gravel spot in the old road and continued to spin propellers at full blast while upside down, flinging asphalt rocks and dirt 20 feet into the air and breaking 2 of the propellers. Luckily i happened to have a spare set of props for just such an occasion. I literally unscrewed the broken props, put the new ones on, turned the drone off and on again, recalibrated the compass and started the thing right back up and it was back in the sky not 5 minutes later. Gimbal was fine! flying behavior was like new! the thing was unscathed after falling through a tree and crashing onto a old road. It was a miracle. Or just a badasz drone. I was lucky that my drone only suffered a few hard scratches to the plastic body and some dust marks after crashing like that. It still flies as if it were new. Thanks the drone gods for that one. I also had a polar pro nd filter on it which also suffered a ding on the outside of the aluminum mount ring but it still works fine also."

Case Club Waterproof DJI Phantom 3 Drone Wheeled Case Silica Gel Propellers On

The case club phantom 3 drone case is the best of the best. It fits the phantom 3 professional, advanced and standard. The case was designed by avid fliers with engineering backgrounds. Every inch of space is fully utilized for your drone and accessories. Starting with the lid cutouts, we cut reliefs for the propellers which ensures the perfect fit for the props, preventing them from being bent or touched in any way (unlike competitor's cases! ). We've included 2 (reusable) silica gels which stick in the lid and remove moisture inside the case. Perfect when flying around water or in humid environments. Once the canisters are saturated, throw them in the oven to dry them out then use them again! the insert holds the phantom 3 with the propellers on or off. Extra propellers can be stored in the the long pocket next to the drone. The insert is equipped to handle 6 extra batteries along with a battery relief for the actual drone allowing up to 7 batteries total. The propellers on the drone are held in place with precision cut plastic protruding from the foam. This ensures they line up correctly with the lid and prevents them from accidentally being closed in on. A tablet cutout above the drone fits all major tablets (up to 12"x7"x1/2") including ipad air & ipad mini. Two accessory pockets on the right and bottom have removable plastic dividers. Segment either accessory pocket in half or pull out the plastic divider to make room for larger items. Towards the left of the case there is another accessory pocket. The remote cutout fits all phantom 3 remotes. Small slots hold sd cards nicely organized and well protected. To top everything off, a softer foam pad below the drone is included which supports the gimbal and camera. Drone and accessories depicted in pictures are not included. Case is made in the usa, is 100% waterproof, and made to organize & protect your drone! case is airline approved for checked luggage. This is the best phantom 3 case there is!

The F.A.Q. for Dji Phantom 3 Professional Quadcopter 4k Uhd Video Camera Drone (CP.PT.000181)

This review is a bit premature as i've only flown it once, but setup, firmware update, and the dji go app worked flawlessly on the first flight. I didn't get the video range i was expecting but discovered later it was set to "custom" and it was on a congested channel. Hoping for better range next time. I have to say this product is very well designed and looks thorougly tested (from a development standpoint). The quad, transmitter, and app are all very polished and look like they are truly ready for prime time and that's not the norm these days it seems. . I pondered getting a phantom 4 but at almost double the price, now seemed like the perfect time to get a p3 pro as it has a lot to offer. Dji go app works without a hitch on my year old nexus 6 although the nexus 6 is a little "fat" with the case on to fit in the tx holder. It barely secures it so i'll be looking for a solution for that. Don't need the phone falling off while i'm flying. Looking forward to more great flights with this and will update if any issues.

A number of questions have been asked here.

(3) Question: Is this able to shoot in 24 fps?

(4) Question: What is the range on this drone?

(5) Question: What is the range

(6) Question: I have the phantom 3 pro and i can not find software to use on my ipad or my android. can anyone help me to the url to download the program. thanks

(7) Question: I guess a 3/4 g internet connection is required but what is the minimum internet broadband (kbps) necessary to have the the drone working correctly ?

(8) Question: How high does it fly?

(9) Question: I'd love to know why the shipping date has changed from may 15 to june 30th.

I love this drone, it is everything they claim it to be. My advice is to read all about it before you take it out. Dont try flying it inside the house as you will crash if you are a novice. The initial updates and calibration, specially the imu calibration is of utmost importance if you want to have problem free flying. I highly recommend it and definitely buy from online store in case of problems! if you have questions regarding the initial setup and updates you can contact me on rayrokni gmail. Com and i will be glad to help. . Update, for your information. . Hey you all, so i got my brand new p3p on july 17th. I had spent all june and most of july reading nearly everything on it and watched untold videos on youtube. So when i got it i went through all the initial setup, i. E. ; firmware updates, understanding how the thing flies, how dji pilot app works and it's freeze up issues and what to do if it happens mid flight etc etc. I flew it about ten times that day and it flew just perfect, home return to within 5 feet, ioc just perfect. Everything just wonderful. On the last flight i was feeling so comfortable with it that i started flying real aggressive maneuvers and then it just suddenly cut off engines and fell from about 30 feet straight on to grass. Well, the gimble gut bent and the landing gear got bent too, everything else survived. In fact i ve been flying it since and as we speak, i am in outter banks, nc and flying it in 15 to 25 mph winds and it holds its ground just great. The reason for this thread is to clarify other mid air engine shutdowns for newbees such as myself. The p3 did exactly what it was told to do, cut engines! and that is from csc that i did as i was doing the maneuvers. Well, some would say it is silly to have csc to cut out motors, i am not going to get in to that. The moral of this long winded thread is that if i had read the entire user manual as suggested by dji i would have come across the csc and the warning from dji as not to use it in flight as the motors will cut out. I actually do remember coming across the csc part in the manual but for some stupid reason just jumped over it! that is a engineering decision that dji made to cut out motors with csc, it is besides the point whether we agree with that decision or not, maybe a separate button would have been more apt. , but the fact is if we read the entire manual then most of the mid air motor cut outs would disappear. It is neither the p3's fault nor dji. It is my own stupidity for not reading everything! and costing my self another $600 for a new camera! , which by the way i am not going to, it still flies fantastically and takes great videos, just lop side, lol. I will use it the way it is and then buy a new one after i ve saved the money because i can always use parts in case of further crashes. One last thing , remember this drone is a flying camera not an acrobatic drone, which i was trying to fly as one! learn the csc and stay far away from those stick commands. I can not speak highly enough of this drone and absolutely recommend it to everyone who wants a stable platform. By the way ive found out that ios is a more stable platform for dji pilot, much less freeze ups! have fun fly safe. . The pix were taken with a bent gimble after the 30feet drop straight on to grass! and it still flies perfect.

Best dji phantom 3 professional quadcopter 4k uhd video camera drone (cp.pt.000181) in review

So, i have been wanting a drone for the last few years. I have repeatedly put one into my cart and then backed out and deleted it. I didn't want to spend the money on a toy. Well, i finally pulled the trigger and could not be happier. The dji phantom 3 professional drone is awesome. . I was scared silly the first time i flew it. There was no reason to be. It was so easy to fly. By the end of the 10th flight, i already felt very comfortable flying completely out of view and quite far away. I am still a bit nervous about getting out near the mile mark, but i have a couple of time. One time i was even able to experience the loss of connectivity with the drone. I freaked out and started to run towards where the drone had been. Yep, no need to. Within a few seconds it had connected back to my pad and was already starting its journey back to me. The auto return home had activated and it was doing what it is supposed to do. . The pictures are amazing. The 4k video is amazing. Only issue i have had is that my computer isn't powerful enough to truly enjoy and edit the video clips. I will probably have to upgrade that soon. However, i have posted videos on youtube that are amazing. Cannot say enough good things about this drone. If you have been waiting to buy one, you will not be disappointed with the dji phantom 3 professional.

Love the machine! - customer support - not so much. I purchased the phantom 3 pro bundle kit - the extra battery i received would not take a charge. After contacting dji support i was told i would need to return the battery for repair. Return for repair? i just bought a new battery and it is defective, it needs to be replaced! - nope - not their policy. Wait for a shipping label, ship it, wait 5-7 days for return process and wait for it to be shipped back. I bought the bundle so i could fly more than 23 minutes a day. Should have listened to the reviews.

I am extremely happy with my phantom 3 professional. Best drone for the money. I was having trouble deciding between this and the phantom 3 advanced, but am glad i went with the professional. Shooting in 4k gives me a lot more flexibility in editing. Since most of my projects are 1080p, i can zoom in even further without losing image quality. The drone works without difficulty. I would highly recommend spending time practicing in the dji go app before actual flying. Also spend time on dji forums reading on how to prevent fly aways and such. Then make sure to fly in beginner mode for the first 10-20 flights before you become really comfortable with the controls. . I have zero regrets with my purchase. Beyond happy!

T. Eva, Nebraska says

I could (and have) go on for hours about this drone. I know, it is an "aerial camera", or an unmanned aerial system, but for this review i will call it a drone for sake of simplicity. First off, i am a very experienced rc aircraft flyer. I have flown airplanes, and a lot of helicopters. This is also not my first drone. That being said, i will get into my review. I love this drone! i flew rc helicopters in competitions, and never felt comfortable hovering nose-in. With the phantom, it doesn't matter which way the "nose" is facing. You can set the drone to react to your controls so that when you push away, the drone flies away. When you pull back, it comes back to you. I haven't used the feature, but for new flyers that get disoriented, this can be a nice feature. The drone is stable, stable, stable. We get some pretty significant wind here, and i have tested its ability to handle wind. It handles more wind than i am comfortable flying it in, and i cannot imagine a situation where i would possibly need to fly it in a wind stronger than it can handle. With the stabilized gimbal, the video is stable even in gusty winds. You will see reviews about how fast the phantom 4 is, but don't let that fool you. This drone is pretty fast. On a calm day, i had mine up to almost 40 mph. For those who are new to drones, you will love this drone. When you learn to fly rc airplanes or rc helicopters, if you lose orientation or control, the aircraft is going to crash. If you feel like you're losing control of this drone, just let go of the controls! the drone goes into a stable hover and waits for you. The worst case scenario is that if you just feel like you can't control it, when the battery starts getting low it will return home and land itself. Seriously! . The return to home feature is one of the things that i love most about this drone. I have found that i get lazy with this feature. I'll fly out a few thousand feet filming, and instead of flying it home, i just hit the return to home button and let it come home on its own. The feature did save me one time also as i had flown out over the foothills near my house. I could see the drone above the hills, but i lost signal with it. I was adjusting my antennas and getting a little worried when a few seconds later it announced that it had lost signal and was returning home. A few seconds after the announcement i regained signal and was able to fly. Without the return to home feature, i would have lost my drone that day as it was over a half a mile away over high-desert foothills. It would have disappeared into the sagebrush. The video is absolutely beautiful! on a 60" 4k tv, you will see every tiny detail in the video! . The modes for the p3 are also very well designed. The point of interest mode allows you to drop a "center point", then back out to a distance and altitude from that point and set the speed. It will circle that point, keeping the camera focused on that point at the distance, speed, and altitude you specify. The follow me mode is great also, but it is actually following your controller / tablet. So, the smart follow me mode is not like the phantom 4, but it does work well. Another thing that i love about this drone is that i can fit the drone, three batteries (could hold four), the controller, my samsung galaxy tab s2, sunshade, and harness all inside the hardshell backpack. I throw the backpack on, and hike up around lake tahoe. It is nice to have the entire unit packed into one backpack that i can take with me without worry. Overall, i cannot say enough good about this drone. The firmware update process has gotten much better, and updating is fairly easy now. Please understand, i am not selling the p3 over the p4, or vice versa. I intend to get a phantom 4 also, but am very pleased and happy with my p3 pro. I am in aviation management, and a manager at an airport. I took my drone out to test out the geofencing. I was very pleased to find that when i turned on my drone, it told me that i was in a no-fly zone, and would not allow me to launch. I am very happy about the responsible approach dji has taken to working with the faa and the aviation community to promote safe flying and also prevent inadvertent flights into an airport's airspace. I would highly recommend this drone if you are thinking about getting into drones. It is such a pleasure to fly.

This thing is durable. I respect it more and more every time i crash it or it gets tangled up in a tree or bush. (2 crashes yesterday: 1 was a tree, 1 was an attempt at a rc shut down during landing. Neither worked out, lol! ) i seem to get worse every time i fly it, lol! i'm happy to have made this purchase. The range, responsiveness, ease of use, and stability of the craft were unexpected. The camera quality ain't bad either. I'm a professional, and i can't wait to see how a good a visual i'll get from it. But so far, after i figured out how to switch to manual and set my own iso and shutter rates, i'm sure i can make it work on "some" professional projects. . I can't wait for the "fun" factor to wear off so i can get serious with it. . -. . Update . The need to update it every other day makes it almost unusable. From 5 stars to 1 star. It works one day, the next it needs an update, and so on and so on. The damn thing is almost unusable. . Updated again. They fixed it! works like a charm! i guess it had a technical glitch. I paid no shipping or repair fees. Thank you dji

This may seem overboard, but this little device has changed my life. I was one of those individuals who just enjoyed firing up the xbox or the playstation, and my afternoons were spent fighting others online; thinking that in some way all of those digital matches actually mattered, or accounted for something. I was given a regular rc helicopter from my father and could not get it but a few feet off the ground before crashing, and eventually smashed it up within a weekend. Discouraged, i really gave up flying rc vehicles, until i started watching a few videos on youtube about drones. Encouraged, i purchased a hubsan found here on online store for approximately $40. I was simply amazed at how easy it was to fly right out of the box. Even though it was cheap and small, it flew amazingly well outside; tolerating the wind with a level of mastery that i still quite don't understand. I had saved long and hard, and knew that hubsan had given me the skillset to move onto something bigger and better, so i sprung for the best. The inspire (the version above the phantom 3) i still feel like is too much money, and best suited for 2 people to fly at the same time (one operating the camera, and the other the drone itself). However, the phantom 3 is so amazing the thing practically flies itself. The way i describe it those who have not yet experienced it is that it's like owning your own private helicopter, that you can hop in any time you want. Because of this device i spend far more time outside of the home, than i ever do inside. This is a dream come true, and i am so utterly happy that i purchased this, and i highly recommend you do the same. Now experience from trial and error, i will provide you with a few insights that i had to learn along the way. Buy extra batteries. They are expensive, but 20 min of flight simply isn't enough. I think 3 really is a minimum, so expect to eventually get 3 batteries. Buy yourself a carbon fiber gimbal guard. Often times you will land on uneven surfaces and or small objects can hit the gimbal, and it will be very upsetting once you learn how much it costs just to replace the gimbal (online storeg carries them). Get yourself a nice lens cap (also on online store) that locks to the gimbal for travel. That way your lens is protected while the gimbal gets protected from the jarring effect of traveling with it. Buy yourself some filters. The more the better, but start with the 2nd to the darkest one first. In direct light, or summer-like conditions, it will make the video pop. Buy yourself a nice case, cheap ones fall apart and don't really protect it. I purchased a hard shell backpack case on ebay because it happened to be 1/2 the price on online store, but online store carries them now for the same price. Avoid carbon fiber blades. They are expensive, and don't give you anything that it claims. It does not make it quieter, or more nimble; it actually makes it more jittery, and unstable. Take your time setting it up. Perhaps the most important thing when mentioning this. Most of the stupid fly aways or crashes on youtube is due to pilot error. When you set it up make sure to calibrate the compass every time. And imu every 25 or so flights. But verify the imu every 1st flight when you take it out. There is a check imu and a calibrate imu. So check imu every 1st flight wherever you are. Every 25 flights, make sure your on level ground and calibrate imu. Its important. Make sure you have many satellites connected to the craft. The more satellites connected, the more accurate information your phantom can receive. Trust in the return to home button on the controller. If you have connected to the satellites and took your time setting it up, then it will return to you. Be sure to set the correct return to home height as to avoid trees or anything else that can get in the way. Avoid android. Sorry to say this because i have an android phone, but they simply don't work well with the phantom pov system and app. Get yourself an ipad mini and use it strictly for the phantom; that way you get no skipping, only crisp solid video. Also try and take off from hills, or mountains; the clearer the line of sight from your controller to the phantom, the further you will be able to go. Above all, have fun fly safe. And don't violate any faa rules by flying over freeways, or heavily populated areas. Be sure to register you craft; i'm sure you don't want a fine if you don't. Also if you are really new, and scared of purchasing such an expensive toy neary arial is one of the only insurances that actually protect the phantom 3 pro in the united states. They pay for all damages to your craft including postage to and from their repair facility. So keep them in mind, if you want peace of mind. Before splurging on a bundle, calculate what each item costs, and avoid bundles containing crap you don't need. Above all, have fun!

If you are inexperienced with drones (as i was) and you are wondering "yeah, but can i figure this thing out and make it work and get some cool photos? " the answer is yes. Initial set up takes a little work with assembly and downloading the smartphone app, and getting set up (they have fantastic videos that help a ton), but once you get going, it is simply amazing what you can do. This thing is really pretty easy to fly the video feed back to you at the controls is really amazing and the photos and videos are mind-blowing. If you are a total klutz/spaz, you are going to want to practice for a while in an open space so that you have the hang of how the controls are relative to the direction of travel (backwards if you point it towards you for a selfie). But the practice is not necessary to fly it competently - more about flying it really well so that you can reliably land it right where you want or bring it down amongst trees, etc. Out of the box this thing is really incredibly powerful and the power is amazing accessible even to beginners. I am really pleasantly surprised how fun and easy this is (it's still a techy gadget, but it is far, far better than i expected. ) below is a shot taken with the drone.

This quadcopter is absolutely amazing, it's just what i expected and more! this drone has an amazing camera! i bought tons of accessories to go with it! for the price of this drone it's everything you need! i was so surprised of how well it performed on its first flight! the speed is amazing! in the future i would sooooo buy another drone from dji, i was amazed also about how high this drone goes! i am so excited to play with this over the summer! the battery lifetime is also very long (23 mins)! i suggest getting all the accessories from the actual dji store or on online store! the range on this drone is amazing, i went easily over 1, 000 meters (1 mile about) and this drone was working very well! over the summer i will try to go further because in the winter flying the drone, it's too cold! i do not recommended flying it in snow or rain unless you are advanced and it is only driziling rain or only a small amount of snow! you should fly your drone when it's about 40 degrees otherwise the battery can get too cold and can freeze up the drone a little, if i fly when it's under 40 degrees i put my battery near a vent that's blowing hot air just to warm it up! do not fly when battery is under 30%! i suggest hitting the go home button if you are a good distance away and the battery is low (30%)! when you take off make sure you have enough room and also make sure you monitor it when it is auto landing! well that's pretty much it about this amazing quadcopter! hope you enjoy your drone and take this review helpful!

One of the best things i have purchased for myself. I used photography as a medium to help offset depression. I bought a p3p and a sony camera and within a two month span i had created some pretty unique photos. . I crashed it recently and sent it off to dji. Their customer care i was dreading! . . I read many bad reviews before buying it regarding their repairs and customer service and i was more than nervous. . Anyway i contacted them and told them my story of their product malfunctioning and falling to the ground smashed to pieces. . The representative set up free shipping to send the drone in for repair. Within 21days and online tracking i had a p3p (presumably the same one) back in my hands fully repaired . For free. . The slack this company has got must have been from their "early days". My transaction was smooth and hassle free. I presumed the turn around time would be long or i would receive a big bill for the "costs" like apple tend to do when a laptop screen gets cracked. . Dji. Well done. Great product, user friendly, and helped me combat my depressed moods. Your customer service was above par. . Regards. . (also here are some pics i have taken with it so far let me know what you think). The multiple drone pic was edited with final cut pro. . Happy and safe flying

This is by far the most amazing piece of technology that i've ever spent my money on. In some ways, i feel like a kid again. And to think that it costs less than my camera and lens kit blows my mind. I have to stress that this is not a toy. If you're a photographer, videographer, or a person who loves the outdoors, this tool will change the way you see things - literally. . I brought a much less expensive quad with a camera (under $70) before taking the plunge with this one. I figured if i was a clutz, it would be better to crash the cheap one rather than this thing. After getting hooked on the smaller hobby-like quad, feeling comfortable with it's controls (mode 2, same as the phantom), and watching youtube videos on the dji phantom for a month, i placed my order and received it 2 working days (in hawaii! ). . The good:. . -unbelievably easy to fly. So much so, that you have to keep reminding yourself not to get too comfortable or confident with the controls. It is a flying machine that is capable of causing physical and property damage. Be responsible. -the camera. I purchased the "pro" version, but be aware that the only difference is in the camera. 4k vs no 4k. Whether in 4k or in hd mode (various hd mode settings), the video is absolutely crisp and clear, with colors even and true. I prefer recording in the 'ultra hd 24fps" 4k mode. -the price. Either at $999 for the advanced or $1259, i think it's a steal. . Cons:. The extras you will need to buy. With realistic flight time at around 17 minutes (you want enough time to safely get back to your take off point), you'll want want another battery to extend your time out. In addition, when you're walking around with a $1200 piece of technology in your hands, things can and do happen - get a case. Then add prop guards (yes - you should get them). This will easily bring your $1295 purchase well over the $1500 quite quickly. . Customer service - i've read the reviews, so knew what i could be potentially getting into. My only hope was that i received a unit with no issues. So far so good. Having said that, you can find way more information on youtube than you can in the manual. There are also a few forums out there where other users share their experiences. Anytime i wasn't sure about something, or if it didn't appear that the unit was working as it should, this is where i found my answers. . Easy to fly:. Yes this is a "con". Why? because the skies could soon be filled with irresponsible kids and adults, who could ruin it for the rest of us. . Updates - updating the firmware can be tricky if you're not paying attention to the sounds and beeps while the firmware is updating. Tried updating mines for 4 hours, and was ready to give up before i realized that the firmware had been updated on my first try. It will beep 3 times when done. If it keeps rejecting the firmware update, it may be because it's already been done. Unfortunately it seems that the only way to know for sure is to listen for the 3 beeps, then take it out. If it flies, it's updated. . Things to keep in mind:. They have a list of "recommended" phones and tablets for use with the flight apps. I have a samsung galaxy 5, and have used the dji pilot app without any issues. Wanting a bigger fpv view, i purchased an ipad mini 2 just for use with the phantom 3. The ios pilot app is now called dji go and differs from the android version. The ipad mini 2 ran hot on my first flight. I turned off video cache in the app, and it seems to have solved the problem. Don't get lazy by continuously using the "auto take off" and "home" features. It will hurt the honing of your flying skills. I've seen people who have been flying drones much longer than i have, and they still can't land or take off correctly, even on a flat surface. Be responsible, protect your investment, and the physical well being of others. . It appears to me that this product was produced and distributed with the premise that the technology would override the need for technical assistance to consumers. What i mean by that is - it seems that more often than not the units do what they are programmed to do, and what they are advertised to do. Any issues i've come across (updates, rc/aircraft linking) were resolved with patience, reading message boards (both djis and others), and just a tad bit of technical common sense on my part. Now expect that if the unit malfunctions, i just may have a different experience. However, i believe in the technology, and getting a malfunctioning unit probably isn't any more frequent than purchasing a lemon tv or pc - if you do your research. I've had lots of good fortune with those purchases within the past few years, and hopefully it continues with this amazing little flying machine. Update: 01/08/2016:. I've had a little over 250 flights so far with no mishaps or malfunctions. I'm so pleased with this purchase and product that i'm looking forward to getting an inspire if i can save enough.

So. 800lb gorilla in the room, dji just released the new phantom 4 on march 1st. I'm going to write this review on the phantom 3 professional, then comment on some of the new features offered on the new 4th gen release, and offer some thoughts on why the phantom 3 is still a good buy. . I've been buying and flying quadcopters for two years now. Everything from hubsan x4s to cheerson cx 20s (quanum nova). The phantom 3 professional is simply amazing. Unboxing and set-up was pretty easy. Set up consists of charging the batteries, updating the firmware, installing the props, and calibrating the compass (also the imu but that's a one time thing). Even if this is your first quadcopter and you don't understand everything i'm writing about, you can set this up and fly it, trust me, and its a blast! once i got in the air, i couldn't believe how precise the gps guidance and hold pattern was, it will hover and stay in place exactly where you want it. You can send it straight up, and straight down, and it stays in the same place within inches. Flying it is a dream, it will use gps to maintain direction and compensate for breezes/wind. I had it out in 15mph winds and it did a fantastic job, i didn't once feel like it was going to blow away or that i didn't have control. If you do get into a sticky situation, it has enough power to overcome 20mph winds as far as i have tested. I would avoid taking any quadcopter out in winds over 20mph. The camera is great, i bought the professional for the 4k, even though i don't have all the equipment yet to utilize that much information and picture quality, i wanted to do some future proofing. I still film some shots in 1080hd and it looks awesome on our tv! what's cool is in mid flight, you can hover and switch between camera and recording mode, and adjust all settings on the camera while its in the air using the dji go app. The app is nice and will install on apple and android devices. You have access to live information such as speed, altitude, battery voltage, and much more. I'm running the app on my nexus 9 tablet and it is true that it has some issues crashing, it seems to crash once in a while when i push the record button to stop recording, but not often enough where its a major concern, and the phantom will just hover in place until you get the app back up and running. The batteries charge fully within about an hour, as advertised. Be ready to spend $120 for spare batteries, they are pricey and you're at the mercy dji and just a few knock off companies that make batteries for the phantom. One of the more difficult parts to flying quads is landing them without tipping over or bouncing too much, as the quad gets caught up in its own draft from the props when close to the ground, causing it to drift erratically. Dji came through big with a solution for this, a three sensor sonar system on the belly of the quad that monitors the ground once you get within about 3 feet of landing. The sensors basically take a picture of the ground below, then overlay that with live motion to hold the quad steady while you finish your decent to land. Its truly amazing, i've had first time flyers land this thing no problem. Now about the customer service, which by large is the reason this product is taking a lot of hits on the ratings. I don't have any service experience with dji service and sure hope not to, it sounds terrible based on other reviews. The reason i proceeded with my purchase, is that i was confident the quality was there and i could for the most part expect to get one that isn't defective, so far i was right. And while we're talking about "defects" be sure to always calibrate the compass when you change flying/shooting locations, as per dji instructions. Compasses not being calibrated is a big reason why pilots experience fly away malfunctions. I appreciate the technology built onto the phantom 3 because prior to this i flew quads in full manual mode with little help from any type of guidance systems. This is an outstanding product for the price and you won't be disappointed! . . Now the phantom 4 is out. Having the phantom 3 professional for two weeks i still have time to return it and upgrade to the 4th generation. Will i do it? no. For several reasons. First the features. I consider myself an amateur aerial photographer and really enjoy shooting awesome photos and videos. At the same time, i love flying quads and sharpening my piloting skills. One of the major advancements with the phantom 4 is the collision avoidance system, where it can avoid head on collisions only (no sensors on the sides, back, or top). The technology is totally awesome, but you can still easily crash into tree branches while ascending or back into or fly sideways into something. The only time this feature would be helpful to even the most experienced pilots, is when you go into return to launch mode, it will avoid and adjust for obstacles on the way back if you get in a sticky situation. Another cool feature is on the app, you can select an object on the screen and it will automatically follow that object (person, car), or you can tap on a location on the screen and it will automatically fly to that location, avoiding obstacles on the way, awesome! final notes, they claim 47mph speed, compared to 35mph for the 3rd generation. Battery life 28 minutes compared to 25 minutes for 3rd generation. Controller (transmitter) remains the same for the 4th generation. Camera on 4th gen can shoot 4k at 30fps over 4k at 24fps on the 3rd gen, it can also shoot 1080hd at 120fps for slow motion footage. Today, the price of the phantom 3 professional is $1, 000. The 4th gen is going for $1, 400. Keep in mind with a phantom 4, you'll hit $2, 000 in no time buying a few spare batteries, a hard shell backpack, and any other accessories you might want. The 4th gen is marginally better in battery life, camera capabilities, and speed, the breakthrough being the collision avoidance and selecting objects to follow and flight destinations on the app screen. If all you want is great aerial photography and have little interested in actually trying to fly a quadcopter, or just want the latest impressive tech, the phantom 4 is a great buy. If you don't need the latest and greatest and are looking for a value buy, the phantom 3 professional is still unmached in my opinion. For those of us that enjoy putting some art into flying and shooting, the 3rd gen is still an excellent choice! it has been out for almost a year now, its features, quality, and firmware are proven. I'll wait and see what dji comes up with for the 5th or 6th gen. Dji has been releasing new versions of the phantom faster than apple has released new iphones (first generation phantom was released in 2013). So if you want to keep up with dji, you'll need to earmark $1, 400+accessories every 9 months with the way the last two generations were priced. I'm not trying to sell one generation over the other, just offering my opinion from a standpoint of experience with quads/drones. Finally, regardless of the new tech features and guidance systems, always learn how to fly in full manual mode. Gps signals get lost, compasses malfunction or aren't calibrated due to human error, and sometimes there are situations that current technology can't compensate for, when things get real, you want to be able to safely maneuver your quad and get it back. Have fun, and be safe out there! . . Update: i'm coming up on a year now with my phantom 3. Still love it! everything still functions properly and i have yet to crash it. As i predicted above, dji already launched a new quad since the phantom 4 called the mavic pro. Looks cool and has fold up arms. I ended up going back to school for a masters so i won't be able to purchase new quads for a while. I'm really glad i have the phantom 3 and flying it hasn't gotten old. I paid over $1, 000 a year ago, now you can get it for $800. Great deal! also, the battery prices have been fluctuating. Sometimes you can find genuine dji phantom 3 batteries for $110, compared to $130 when it was new.

I bought this on pre order from an online store seller. I received the item on may 15th just as promised. . Now to the review. I previously had a phantom 2 and it was really good. Stable and fun to fly. The phantom 3 is just amazing. . First, the dji pilot app is great. It works on my samsung galaxy s6. I used the qr code from dji as the version on the google play store is not right. It has weird problems. . Once i got everything hooked up and went through the 1 hour plus firmware upgrade for the copter, remote and battery, i was ready to fly. The dji pilot app starts the compass calibration and shows you what to do on the screen. Took about 30 seconds. Gps connects very quickly. I was up in the air quick. The first person on the pilot app is really cool. The map feature works really well too. You can see all of the flight data such as battery level, transmission signal, remote signal and a bunch of other stuff. The remote works really good to move the camera as well as start and stop video and take snapshots. It also records flight data for later review, tells you condition of battery and so much more. . Now to the copter. It flies awesome. It was very stable in the wind and you could not notice camera shake. The 4k video is super sharp. You can also adjust iso, shutter speed and other functions in flight. I also like the one button take off and one button "come home" feature. It lands within a foot of where it took off. Love it love it love it. . The copter is very fast, has amazing range and is a pleasure to fly. It is so much fun, i can't wait to get out of work and take it up for a spin. Everyone that sees it is amazed by it.
