Doctor Who 12th Doctors Premium Sonic Screwdriver Touch Controls (Underground Toys) 2998

Review for doctor doctors premium screwdriver controls

Price was $11.59. I liked this version, but didn't love it. I think when you evaluate something like this, you have to put aside all the fanboy/girl thrill, and instead look at the functionality and build quality. Because *of course* its fun to run around pseudo-sonic-ing things. Everybody knows that. But what we really need to know about are the drawbacks and design flaws. Specifically:. . 1. ) the claw is extremely wobbly and jiggly. The spring action to deploy it is fine, the problem area is the tines of the claw, which rattle around noisily, even when in the stowed position. They could have made those small hinges a lot tighter and more elegant, but they didn't. This is the 1 thing that makes this seem visibly toylike and amateurish, instead of like a screen prop. I read other reviews that mentioned the loose wobble of the claws, but i didn't understand *how* jiggly it was until now. . 2. ) the push-button spring action of the claw is fairly inelegant. It has the feel of simple spring, rather than a nice fluid motion. So the jiggly claws extend too forcefully, rather than with a smooth, even click. You have to manually retract the claws and push them back in to place. I guess for this price, you can't expect much. . 3. ) the touch control for the light and sound is mildly problematic in a way that i didn't expect. Unless you are very careful about how you grasp the handle, you basically end up misfiring the lights and sounds unintentionally. It would be nice if there was a more foolproof way that you could put the screwdriver in your pocket, or set it down on a table without fear of setting off the lights/sounds. . The touch control is actually on a rubbery feeling seam that runs almost two inches. I don't know the exact nature of the switch, but it obviously has to be either resistance or capacitance. For a resistance switch, when you lay your finger (or anything electrically conductive) across two electrodes, the resistance drops, which closes the circuit, which turns the lights and sounds on. Removing your finger increases resistance, so the circuit remains open, and the lights and sounds stay off. For a capacitance switch, touching the object increases the capacitance, which triggers the switch for the lights and sounds. You can't see any metal electrodes, so maybe it's a capacitance switch? either way, you'll trip the lights and sounds almost constantly anytime you handle this screwdriver. . 4. ) the sound level is fairly quiet, and has that tinny toy quality to it, rather than the full-bodied "real" electronic sound you might expect. . 5. ) the battery hatch is on the white part of the handle, and it's very noticeable. Why wouldn't they just conceal the battery compartment in the "removable power core" if they were going to go through the trouble to make it removable. ? note: i actually couldn't get mine to remove itself. . For this price, it's a cute toy, with a decent amount of features to keep your interest for a little while. However, it's very definitely a plastic-y toy, and not something that looks like a replica, so it feels best-suited for a child rather than comic-con level events. If they put a little more effort into the claws, and made the spring motion more elegant, i bet people would be willing to pay a few dollars more.

Prologue

I'm not sure how long this will be, but i'm giving the review now - because i've had plenty of time to see any issues with the sonic - and fix them! . . First off, this is the coolest type of toy i've seen made in 2 decades. The touch control is almost baffling. There are two general areas on top and bottom that need to be touched at the same time to activate the lights and sound. They are directly on top and bottom of the sonic - located in alignment with the extension button. Now before i get too far into the review, i'm going to make note here: there are issues with the sonic! . I will tell the best advice i can to fix the issue. I put that in all caps so that it may appeal to anyone reading reviews, wondering if this is worth the purchase. So. I'm going to tell you how to fix the issue, before i give the actual review. The reason i've decided after so long to make this information known, is because when i got mine. It didn't work as marketed. It worked 98% properly. What i mean by this, is that - this sonic was designed to activate lights and sounds by touching it, at which point if the owner decides - they can simultaneously press the button with their finger while activating the touch controls - so that the sonic will extend - without interruption, and the lights and sounds will continue to emit. But! this doesn't always work! " ing" - a defective toy. So the first thought one may have (especially an adult who bought it for their kid or someone (like me) who is a whovian, and likes the idea of the toy functioning as advertised) - would be to return it. You don't need to! . Now i can get to this part after babbling for a minute. To fix this issue - simply unscrew the battery compartment, and take out the batteries. You'll notice with the batteries out, that in the inside of the compartment where you put them - right where they slide into - there are your typical electronic connectors for positive and negative. From here. You can fix the issue. You're going to look at the connectors for the "positive" end of the batteries. They are simple prongs that come out a little to connect the "positive" sides of the batteries. They are also used as pressure prongs to keep the batteries in. This is where your problem may be. To fix this. (and i would recommend that you have and adult do this if you're under 18) -legal reasons. What you're going to do, is take a flat head screwdriver or similar tool, and you're going to slightly pull those prongs out. Not a lot. Just enough "1/2 a millimeter" to make them secure the batteries tighter - thus retaining the broken connection that happens from the "shock" of the spring tension when extending the sonic. If done. Like i did. The sonic will now function as advertised. . Now. Since i got that out of the way. I can continue with the review. First the packaging is simple to open. I like the battery tag, that prevents it from unwanted use before purchase. There's not much to be said on the packaging. It's just. Simple. You take off the top, pull the sonic out - then pull the battery tag and you're ready to use it! . . The sonic itself is a true prop beauty! . . The construction is slightly similar to that of the 11th doctors. Meaning that the solidification of the plastic is decently sturdy. I dropped mine one time. Nothing bad happened. (and i'll also note that i had mine in extended mode when i dropped it. ). It doesn't weigh much (8oz i think). But it doesn't feel like fine china either. . The paint job on it is nice. Pending you don't use it a lot. (i have mine on me at all times and i use it quite often for work) so i'd give the paint job about 6 months before you notice any wear and tear. (that's how long it took my 11th doctors). . The mechanics of it are still neat. (the extensional mechanics of it i mean) they are still the same as the other sonics (11th - 12th all versions). As always. I agree with others - to a point where. They went through some trouble to make it "touch control" - but it still doesn't extend like the show prop. It's very disappointing - but as the reviews come pouring in for a year or so. I think that the companies will come up with a way to do this - as it is - supply and demand. . The touch control is a breeze! as a few others have noted. There will be times when you pick this up - and it activates light and sound before you want it to. But i haven't really been upset when it has. Like i said in the above. I use mine all the time - and it's activated a few times before i pull it out of my coat. (i have the replica coats of the 11th & 12th doctors, so the sonic stays in the pocket that the doctor uses. Was hard to find the actual coats - but it happened) the only issue you may have with the touch controls is; (as noted in the beginning of this review, and if you skipped through it - i'll make it known again - there is a simple fix for it! ) that when you activate the touch controls - if you press the button to extend the sonic - it may stop the touch controls from working briefly. Thus making you reactivate them. . As with the touch control - there are still the 2 hidden sounds. Some of you out there. Will have issues with this one too, so i'll include a fix for that right now. If you are having issues activating the 2 hidden sounds - here's the best way to explain their functionality; . You're going to hold the sonic in your hand as if to use the touch controls - your going to use your thumb and first fingers to do this. What i do to activate the hidden sounds (because i too had to figure this out), is you're going to keep your thumb on the top of the touch controls - while using your first finger to tap the bottom of the touch control 3 or 4 times - 3 for the "gun/laser type sound" & 4 for the "pulse/disruptor type sound". It takes a few times to get used to it. . As for the actual lights and sounds - the lights are a bit brighter than the previous versions, and i was given the impression from other reviews (before i got mine), that the sounds were not as loud. I really don't see much of a difference. . What's next? . Let's talk about the battery compartment and batteries. The compartment is of course hidden along the bottom of the sonic. Most people aren't cool with this (especially those who don't like it being part of the white handle and "obvious" when you're looking at it). And the legal stuff is imprinted on the outside of the compartment. (i've heard complaints about this too, but imho - who cares? )(at least it's on the outside of the bottom - rather than on the top in plain sight! ). . The batteries used are the typical lr44s (3 of them). As stated above - they are the main problem as they could be loose - thus stopping the touch controls from working when you press the extension button. But like i said before. I was happy to see a "battery tag". . Let's go with the power core now. It's really just a nice add on. It does nothing. But the end piece holding it is pretty well secure, and i don't see "wear and tear" modifying it's "secureness" anytime soon. I'm actually contemplating taking it apart and modifying the core to light up when removed. . What else. ? . The extension button? it's a lot stronger in this version. So when you use it. You'll feel the "kick" that it gives off. . The claws: they are a bit tighter with this version - when closed. When open - they are not quite as loose as the 11th doctors. . Well i'm sure that this covers everything. I was going to give this review about a week after i got the sonic, but i'm glad that i waited until now. . Overall i gave it 5 stars because the one minor issue was fixable without having to return it. I wanted to give it 4 stars because the extension still isn't designed like the tv shows, but for now it'll have to do. . So if you need something a bit simpler. Like a detailed rating system:. Construction - 4/5. Sound - 5/5. Lights - 5/5. . Ease of use. Touch control - 4/5 (until you get used to it - then - 5/5). Extensional mechanics - 1/5 (until it works like on tv). 3rd & 4th sounds - 3/5 (until you get used to it). . Ok. So i'll wrap this up now. My final thoughts. Well worth the money if you are a whovian or gifting this to someone who is. If not. Still worth the cash - but you may not care to understand why lol. . I had the 11th doctors for over a year. And it's gone through sun, rain, snow, wind, and other weather conditions. But i haven't dropped it into a pool or anything so i don't know how well it'll work it you get it totally soaked. I actually didn't want to get a new sonic since the 12th doctors didn't destroy itself on the show (to make room for a new version) like the 10th & 11th's did (causing the tardis to create a new one for them). But when they put in the touch controls and reduced it to one button. I needed a new one, and was more interested. . Let me think here. Is there anything else i need to add in this? . Lights? check. Sounds? check. Bananas? che. Wait! ? ! i didn't get any with this! . . Oh well. Shut up! -(capaldi's line). . Thanks for reading. Hope it helps and informs. . Sincerely, . Doctor Who 12th Doctors Premium Sonic Screwdriver with Touch Controls Review (05357)

Not much to add to the other reviews. The claw actuator can be made to look like the show, just use a little slight of hand when you push the button. The sound is a touch sensor, like a laptop touch pad, though less sensitive. Instructions say the bottom thing is a "power source". It's just a translucent green bit of plastic, and although instructions say you have to unscrew it, it just pulls out. It's a compression fitting sort of thing. . After some practice (i have had it a whole day now) i have learned how to read the results, which is a little tricky since it is in the ancient language of the time lords. But it has helped me open a jammed car door when someone was stuck in a burning car after a wreck. I also have finally been able to put an end to the theft of my socks (always just one, those little rascals) as it helps me view across trans-dimensional barriers. I used it to make sure the moon stayed in its customary orbit, change my bosses mood so he gave me a huge raise, and find burried treasure. Oh, one last thing. Be careful with the second hidden sound, activated with 4 taps on the backside of the touch sensor button. The first time i activated it, it blasted a huge hole in the wall. Good thing i didn't have it pointing at me! -E. Lisa

A great upgrade to an already great toy. - no more clumsy button on the bottom. Just squeeze the black part. - the top part still pops open with the push of a button next to the trigger (manual close). - this one actually seems to close better than the last. - the "power core" doesn't really do anything but is cool. Cons:. - the battery compartment is way to visible (although it makes it easier to change them). - this opens with a lot of force. Children should be supervised with it when it is in its closed position

Click to see NoticeDoctor Who 12th Doctors Premium Sonic Screwdriver Touch Controls (Underground Toys)"This sonic screwdriver is what the 11th should've been. Only one button to extend. The touch controls is a great new feature and makes it easier for kids to use. You barely have to put pressure on the area for the touch sound effects. I like that the sound effects are little bit lower volume than the 11th. The sound is more clear and better in my opinion. The battery placement on the handle is much easier to get to. For some, that might be a negative because it makes it less of a cleaner look. It extends much quicker and harder than the 11th, which i could see as a little bit of a durability concern. I found myself using it less in extended mode because of that. If you own the 11th should you buy this one? i'd say yes. There's enough improvements here that it's not just a repackage of the older model. I'm very happy with it"

When life hands you darkness, whip out your sonic screwdriver led flashlight. It's modeled to look exactly like the doctor's famous tool, but instead of opening locked doors and fixing electronics, it shines with the brightness of leds. Not a fan of collecting unitaskers? leave the regular sonic screwdriver replicas to the folks who do cosplay or have display cases. This is the perfect blend of collectible and useful tool!

Dr. Who Sonic Screwdriver - 10th Doctor - 50th Anniversary Ltd Edition Lights & Sounds - Day of Doctor Underground Toys

Super fun toy! i bought this because my boyfriend and i were doing a tenth doctor/rose tyler cosplay. I know he didn't have this screwdriver while traveling with rose, but it was cheaper than the other models we found. It worked great, and makes all the correct noises. (obviously the one in the picture is the blue light. A friend of ours was a female 11. )

Let me start off by saying yes, this is about the four hundredth time this screwdriver has been released. But, this is still worth a buy. If you're like me you already have the uv light version with the black ink nib and the uv ink nib. So when i seen this had a blue, yes, blue light i had to buy it. Yeah there are other versions with the blue light that have the grey handle, but since this is an anniversary piece its "collectable". The light is very bright, yellow helix in the clear shaft piece and its noticeably louder than my other version of the tenth sonic. The end piece hasn't an ink nib but can be switched out for one. All in all a good purchase, even with the yellow handle. -Notice from T. Broyles, Wyoming

This is a fantastic sonic. It has great sounds and is very bright. I love it. . I don't know why people i've read on other sites saying its innacurate. Well, to me, it looks like the most accurate sonic of this kind! . . I highly recommended you pick this up. Its great for fans and general toys fans alike. Now, allonsy!

- D. MahoodMy kids are big fans of the modern version of dr. Who. My son had a different version of the 10th doctor's sonic screwdriver that had broken and this was its replacement. This version feels much sturdier than the previous one and will, hopefully, last a lot longer. So far, so good. My kids play quite vigorously with these and for it to hold up under the strain that they put it through is a huge plus for us (i do not like spending money replacing items that have broken),

I got this for my 13 year old son who is a dr. Who fan. He absolutely loves it. I personally think this is way over priced for something that really doesn't do anything but light up and make noise. The quality is ok but there was a button piece that broke off the first day. It's also a lot smaller than i thought it would be. Other than this, for the dr. Who fans, i could recommend it.

Doctor Who 12th Doctors Second Sonic Screwdriver Lights Sounds, 2nd Edition

There are four sounds it's great but i can tell the button is going to give. I'm happy over all!

Doctor who - 12th doctor's second sonic screwdriver - with blue and green lights and sounds - peter capaldi - the doctor's multipurpose tool features numerous settings. It can open most locks, detect all manner of deadly rays, read bio-signs and can generate sonic waves of great power. It does, however, have a bit of trouble effecting wood. The doctor has carried many sonic screwdrivers of various designs throughout his lifetimes, ranging from a simple silver colored tube to more complex illuminated and articulated versions. For a while he relinquished the classic hand-held screwdriver in favor of a pair of 'hands-free' sonic shades, but now he's upgraded to a brand new model of the ultimate gadget! this latest revision is brighter and more complex than before. Time will tell if it gets the doctor into more trouble than it helps him out of! for ages 5 years plus.

Works good. The switch is shaped like a wheel and a future upgrade would be to make this an actual wheel switch. That would be great. It's still good though. Red would also be nice.

The F.A.Q. for Doctor Who 12th Doctors Premium Sonic Screwdriver Touch Controls (Underground Toys)

Just. Awesome! it took a few minutes to get the touch controls down but once i did, it was just. Fantastic! . . The only problem i ran into was an issue with the circuit breaking briefly because of the jolt of the springloaded extension. So it doesn't stay on when you flick it out. All you need to do is take a tiny hex key or triangle wrench and tighten the triangular screws on the extension shafts. Now i only ever have trouble with the light turning on when not extended (only occasionally). But this can be kind of fun cause you have to jiggle it a little with your other hand and you feel like the doctor fumbling around with his screwdriver. . For the price i could not be more impressed!

A number of questions have been asked here.

(2) Question: The figure says 11 inches but the description says 4 x 1. 4 x 1 inches, what is the correct? please

(3) Question: Is it made of metal

(4) Question: Does it extend

(5) Question: Is there a button on the end of the base, so when its extended it can "sonic"

(6) Question: Is it ment to light it up but no sounds some times if not how can i fix it

(7) Question: What's the difference between this and the "non-premium" version? i'd already ordered the other one and may want this too.

I looked of hours for something cheaper than getting a sonic at f. Y. E. And this was a great price and got here just in time for my con. It works great for the 11th and 12th doctor. How ever, it does extend rather fast, so i wouldn't mess with it much. But i'm in love with it, the touch controls works just awesome! i can't keep my dad from messing with it.

Pros: fun, easy to use, adults and kids in our house love it. Fun to use while watching the show. The bottom has a removable power core, but it doesn't attach anywhere or do anything. Fun to look at, but just stores back in the bottom. . Cons: kind of flimsy/cheap. Took us 30min to figure out the button doesn't do the light. You press the button to only extend it. The light/noise comes from simply placing your thumb or finger on the fake leather seam of the black plastic part below the button. It is not intuitive but you only need to touch the black to make the light/sound go. Once we figured that out it was more fun and consistent to use.

The 12th doctor sonic screwdriver is totally worth buying in my opinion! the touch controls are an amazing addition, the power core is cool, and the spring is fun! if youre a doctor who fan, dont hesitate to buy this, do it xd

Z. Megan, Cambridgeshire says

Customers i suggest buying this version or the single button version of this sonic screwdriver instead of the eleventh doctor's! this is a great product in general, it is better than the 11th doctor's sonic. Instead of a big red button on the bottom, there is a removable "power core" that doesn't do anything, but is a neat that they included it. I got mine a while before the expected date! (big plus) the touch controls work excellent (they sometimes don't work, i expected that but it is still great) the extended claws are quite a bit more wobbly than the eleventh doctor's sonic, but it doesn't bother me much. This is an overall amazing product, and i recomend it to any whovian!

A. Diana, Illinois

Very happy with this. I have the older version and this one just seems to feel better and light-up brighter. (maybe it's because it's fresh outta the box? ). I totally recommend this to any "whovian" out there.

R. Judith, Warwickshire says

This is the best sonic screwdriver toy! it is exactly the same as the one the 12th doctor uses. The touch controls are so cool, no buttons to push. The sounds and light are so authentic that i really do think my son is going to unlock a door or start the car with it sometimes! the removable power core is neat, and the ease of replacing the batteries is nice too. It is much more sturdy toy than other sonic replicas we have bought from other companies. All in all, this toy was well worth the money and my son is "extremely very" stoked to have it. Jolly good!

For all the whovians looking to buy this to add to the collection, or for those who are getting this as a gift for the dr who fan in your life, this is a great investment. . As advertised, it is the 12th doctor's (peter capaldi's) version of the sonic screwdriver. What makes it unique are the touch controls for the lights & sounds and the removable "power core. ". . The only real button on the toy is the switch to deploy the claws (which then must be manually pushed back into place to retract them; not individually, but they don't retract on their own). . The touch controls are on the top and bottom of the black part of the sonic. Any flesh that is in those places at the same time will activate the lights and sounds. The reason i say "any flesh" is because even if your gripping the whole thing, your palm and finger will activate if. . The "core" is at the bottom, or butt end, of the sonic. It's tightly pushed in when you first open the toy, but after some tugging and twisting it should pop out. . To begin use of the whole assembly, simply open the package, pull out the battery tab and play away. . While mine came in the circular package instead of the blister pack pictured, i have no complaints whatsoever. It's a great addition to my collection. . (no, there's no real difference between the circular or blister packages. )

Q. Mahood, Pays de la Loire

This is my second sonic screwdriver of this model. I also have the old one where you have to activate it with the button on the bottom when it is extended. This sonic works basically the same. I don't believe this one has as many sounds as its predecessor. It is very easy to activate too. It's almost too easy. Just holding it around the black collar too tightly i am accidentally activating it. I'm knocking off 1 star for that. I also notice that the it locks down tighter than my old one but that might just be because the old one became loose over time. This is still better than sonic sunglasses though.

K. Noguera, Leicestershire says

Took me a few minutes to figure out that there is no button for the sound. You just put your thumb over one side of the black part and it makes the sonic sound. This is very authentic. Looks just like the one on the show. Sound is identical and the top opens and closes. Great price point. If you go to hot topic or any other store the price is double what this one was. I love it. I have had it over a year and it is still in the exact same shape as when i got it. No fading or chipping of the paint and my 5 year old plays with it more than i do. I have even left it in my car for a few months and no sun damage has effected the paint either. This was the 3rd sonic screw driver we have purchased after the others fell apart very quickly.

X. Tracey, West Sussex

Very happy with this purchase! . I bought this not too long ago for my birthday because i'm a die hard doctor who fan, and i'm not disappointed in the least! . I read quite a few bad reviews on this new sonic, so i was a little torn as to buying it or not, but after receiving it, i'm so glad i got it! . There are a few small things that could be improved on. The claws are a little loose when in extended mode, which causes some wobbling. And the touch sensitivity could be worked on, but all in all, it's a great product! . Running around sonicing everything in sight is very much worth the $20. Would buy again.

Y. Brendon, Kansas says

Bought this for my 12 year old daughter who loves dr who. The touch mechanism works flawlessly and the spring action on the claw also works perfectly. The plastic construction is well built and can even sustaqin a short drop onto a hard floor. My daughter can't stop playing with it. This is her 3rd sonic screwdriver (has the 10th and 11th) and by far her favorite.

W. Gladys, Camden

I got this for my friend's son for x-mas and he loves it. The touch area is a tad bit finicky though. There are sometimes it doesn't seem to want to register his touch (or mine). As a long time doctor who fan, i can tell you that i have heard a sound from this toy that i have never heard the sonic make on the show. I doubt a kid would care or notice, but i am a total dork. Good product for any fan of the show overall.
