Grifters A Dystopian Universe Game (Indie Boards Cards) 5232

Review for grifters a dystopian universe

Price was $22.77. Reading the description, i wasn't sure it would be a good family game. I will say we had to explain some of the "occupations" listed on the cards to the kids but once that was out of the way we all had a good time. It's a deck building game that's not in a cookie cutter style or subject matter. If you're family is like mine, you'll enjoy playing.

*update*. Played several 2-player and 3-player rounds. It took that for this game to grow on me a lot more. We all had a good time and that is what matters. +1-star. . Will update some of the stuff below now that we've had a better experience than originally. . . Game overview:. This is a card hand building/manipulation game. I believe the game is set in the same dystopian universe of resistance and coup. Players are crime bosses and building a team of specialists to steal from mega-corporations (and sometimes each other). . Game is over when coins are gone or draw cards are gone or missions are gone. At the end, use your mission cards to give you bonus coins. Player with most coins wins. . Components:. Card, mission cards, cardboard coins, player's "mat" are all fine. Nothing overly exciting. The colors are nice and vibrant and easy to see (if you aren't color blind). Luckily most of the missions are about matching symbols, not colors between cards. . I do like the artwork a lot, as it looks futuristic and edgy. . Theme:. Your cards are everything. The powers and team member cards shuffle through your player mat and you use them to collect mission cards. As you shuffle cards off your mat from active missions, they go from your "hideout to your "refresh" area for a time. The theme works and makes sense that we are all crime bosses hiring criminals for jobs. . Learning curve / game duration:. Low to medium to learn. Mostly because there are different abilities on each card. This will be a slower process for some players, as they have to read and figure out how to leverage the cards they draw into their hand. . Some of the cards seem to have a lot of text to read, so again, it slows things down a bit, as you are trying to figure out combos to get your missions. My kids are very familiar with cards games and specific powers (i. E. Magic the gathering), so they picked up on the combos pretty quick. . There is no build up, so the overall game is pretty fast, even in light of the first half dozen games of getting use to the text on the cards. . Balance:. Random cards give every player a chance to create combos and do well with mission/coin collection. We didn't feel that any one player could run away with the game. . Actually i was loosing bad in one game (1 mission complete versus my opponent had 6), but using the different ways to get money from players and money from the coffer, i lost only by 1 point in the end. I felt great for the comeback, even if i didn't win in the end. . Luck:. Random cards, thus medium luck. Yes, each time you play the replayability is high, but that is because the chance of getting the same cards is mid-level. What will really make this even more random is once they release expansions that add more cards to the draw pile deck. . Strategy:. Low to medium, since you only see a few mission cards at a time and you're trying to build your hand to take the mission before your opponents do. I feels more like a game of rummy or something where you are collecting cards to complete "sets" an thus complete the mission and gain the reward of the mission. . As you collect your cards, if someone beats you to the punch, you now have to change your plans. But there is only so much you can do to plan ahead as the cards keep randomizing. . Final thoughts:. Resistance and coup are super fun and my kids love those games a lot. They like this one too, but i think it is only okay because it is very light game. After playing it another 10-times and having played lighter games since, i like this more. Grifters a dystopian universe game Review (grf1ibc)

If you like deck builders, this game puts a unique spin on them, and is worth checking out as a filler game. The game plays relatively fast, especially once everyone is comfortable with it. Instead of acquiring cards into a deck and playing them as you draw them, you hold all the cards you've acquired in your hand at once, and choose when to play them onto your personal game board to activate them. I like this aspect, as it cuts down on one of the luck based elements of game, but acquiring new cards still has a heavy element of chance to it, which keeps the game interesting. . Player interaction in this game is a bit low, mostly consisting of stealing coins from opponents and competing for public goals, but there are a few cards that allow you to directly interfere with your opponents game plans if you want to go that route. . Another major plus is that the game can be played fast. Once everyone is familiar with the game you can play an entire game in around 15-20 minutes. -T. Pearce

Grifters A Dystopian Universe Game
Click to see NoticeGrifters A Dystopian Universe Game (Indie Boards Cards)"Grifters is a fun little card game by indie boards & cards, the same folks who published the popular hidden identity game the resistance and equally-popular bluffing game coup. I own and enjoy both games, and have also heard great things about coup rebellion (which i have not played), so was excited to have the chance to play this game at oshkosh, wisconsin's premiere gaming convention, newgameapalooza. . I'd describe grifters as a hand management game, with a different feel than either of indie's previous games, although it's set in the same "dystopian universe" setting as their previous games and features the artwork in the same style. . Game play itself is fairly simple. Players begin with a hand of cards, each of which which represents the members of their criminal "gang. " each gang member has unique abilities which may be employed to make extra money, recruit additional members, or thwart your opponents' plans. Several sets of "jobs" for each gang to complete are laid out in a common area. Once your gang has enough members with the prerequisite skills required to complete each job, you can claim it by putting those members' cards in your "hideout, " a special playing area where they lay low for a few turns, and a new job of increasing complexity replaces the job just completed. If your gang lacks the skills required to complete a job, you can still place individual gang members into your hideout to use their unique abilities. . The 'meat' of the game is the way that cards "advance" from one section of your hideout to another, ensuring that each card played is taken out of commission for several turns before returning to your hand. This means that once your gang members have completed a job and have ducked into your hideout, they'll be unavailable for additional jobs in the interim. This interesting game mechanic makes timing extremely important, as you can't take any actions at all without committing valuable and irreplacable resources for a significant length of time. In other words, you need to plan your moves well, because too many big jobs in too short a time can leave you without enough muscle to accomplish anything else. . This is a simple game to learn. The outside of the box says that grifters is recommended for ages 14 and up, but i think that children under 14 could play the game- it's no more complicated than monopoly to play, although the strategies required to be really good at grifters are an order of complexity greater than in monopoly because they require timing and advance planning. . This is a nice, easy, competitive game which can be enjoyed by gamers and non-gamers alike. For the money, grifters is defiinitely worth having."

Indie Boards & Cards Coup Reformation expansion

Good expansion, but not blown away. I play coop as a quick and easy to digest game between other heavy games. I like that it comes with another class (inquisitor) but in the rules they are to replace one of the other classes (ambassador). . Pros:. - decent expansion with great art. - fits in the original box. - team mechanic addition sounds like it will help large games. . Cons:. - cheap cardboard box and is not a replacement for the old box. - new class replaces old class instead of adding to the classes

Driven by their successes, the resistance has gained popular support and entire regions are in open rebellion. In a desperate attempt to stay in control, some government leaders are publicly supporting the reforms demanded by the resistance. But allegiances are constantly shifting, and can be bought for the right price. The opportunity for intrigue and bluff has never been greater. The cost of failure couldn't be higher. Even with the reformation, only one can survive.

Indie Boards & Cards Coup Reformation expansionIndie-Boards-Cards-Reformation-expansion

Coup Reformation Expansion (Indie Boards Cards) FAQ.

Needed for larger groups of players. The new inquisitor is nice, but the guide cards that cover the inquisitor aren't as nice as the old ones so it's not as easy for new players. It would have been better for them to include an optional new role instead of a replacement for the ambassador as it can confuse some who played the original. The embezzling mechanic isn't that great and adds unnecessary complexity to an otherwise simple game. One of the best parts of the game was it's simplicity to teach, but the added complexity changing what the yellow card does, and adding a few other minor mechanics to large group games is not an improvement. I'd almost recommend just buying a second set of the base cards instead of this, but the alliance cards are nice for very large groups. . Don't get me wrong, these are minor complaints and it's still a great game. -Notice from K. Lindsey, Florida

The expansion is okay but the original coup is just as fun without the expansion. With this expansion pack all you do is replace one of the cards in the original coup with a card they give you in this version and then you are now on teams with this version. I personally like playing just the original without the expansion

- N. CampbellDuring my 18 year old sons graduation party - just for fun and wanting to try a new game for the group - the teens went to game store nearby and bought this coup card game - they had such a blast with this (played this for several hours) that the next morning - i immediately got on online store and ordered the expansion pack. We rec'd this quickly (love prime - rec'd in 2 days). . My son browsed the expansion pack and is looking forward to sharing this with his friends. It's very entertaining for me to watch and listen to the creative imaginations these young adults have with games like this.

Very fun game. I love this game because it doesn't involve luck. It's all strategy. Settlers of catan, risk, any game you can think of that uses dice has too much "luck" built in for me to enjoy. Don't even get me started on yahtzee! . But this game has no dice, it's simply strategy, and that's why i love it.

Indie Boards & Cards Coup Rebellion G54 Card Game

Fun game. Cards could be sturdier, and the box the game comes in is huge compared to the actually game. I enjoy it more than the original "coup" because the game goes for a little longer, and there are many more options in terms of cards/variants. Worth picking up if you like card/board games with friends and the idea of "bluffing" and "secrets" sounds fun to you.

Coup rebellion g54 is the exciting sequel to rikki tahta's award-winning game coup. G54 uses the same lightning fast rules found in coup - claim, counter, challenge and bluff - and then adds an exciting strategic layer via character selection.

Coup Rebellion G54 Card Game (Indie Boards Cards) FAQ.

Game is fun. I've played coup a bunch of times with many different people and wanted a change. This introduces a ton of new characters with a bunch of new features. It's a slightly more involved version of coup. Just make sure you're familiar with all the roles (meaning the 5 you choose to play with) before you start. If someone keeps glancing at the various roles, they're probably bluffing. -Notice from T. Clara, East Riding of Yorkshire

This game is absolutely fantastic. If you love the original coup, and the expansion, you'll like this. Setup is basically the same, but takes a little longer, especially right when you get it, because the cards all need to be kept organized. Basically there are variations of each role, and they can be mixed and matched in various ways to change the game up a bit. It'll throw a different dynamic out each time you play, and it'll keep it new and fresh for a long time to come.

- V. NicoleMy family adores this game. It plays very quickly and is a lot of fun. The only complaint we have is card durability; given that this is a bluffing game, the wear patterns on the cards make it difficult to bluff. Card protectors recommended due to their card delicacy.

Excellent expansion on the original game; the different powers and combinations keep it fresh and interesting. The packaging sucks though; too many slots inside with confusing layout and not enough dividers to make sense.

Resistance Hidden Agenda Card Game (Indie Boards Cards) FAQ.

Great expansion to the original resistance; the main attraction being the same roles found in resistance: avalon while keeping the theme of the base game. Adds a lot of more fun and tension to an already great game. The various characters and modes also allow you to adjust the difficulty for one side (spies or resistance) to level things out if one side is always winning. Got great feedback from gamers and non-gamers alike so i highly recommend this for fans of the resistance. -Notice from Y. Powell, Queensland

Makes the game equivalent to avalon, but also adds some other interesting mechanics like targetting and defectors, which both enhance the experience.

Resistance-hidden-agenda-card-game-(indie-boards-cards) set picture

- V. GuestHeck of a lot of fun but it really depends on the group you're playing with. If you have a bunch of filthy casualsin your group, you'll have a frustrating time trying to win on the resistance side. If you want reliable fun with less rowdiness, try coup (also by same company).

The resistance is a popular game in my gaming group and we play it often. This expansion really improves the resistance and makes things more interesting. . Assassin module: this module contains all the special roles that are in the resistance: avalon re-themed. The special roles you can include here really make the game fun. The commander on the blue team knows who all the spies are but she must remain unknown to the spies because if the spies figure out who she is, they can assassinate her and win the game even if three missions succeed. This really makes the game more intense because spies must actually do a little deduction themselves. There are other roles included to make things more interesting. . Defector module: in this module, there is a spy and resistance defector that may change their alliance. They can switch teams once, twice, or not at all in the game! playing with the defectors adds a new level of paranoia that is great. . Trapper module: not my favourite module but still a nice way to change things up. Every mission the leader selects one additional member than is normally required. Everyone chooses a mission card but the leader gets to "trap" one player and view if they have submitted a fail or success and stop them from putting that card in. . Overall hidden agenda is a nice addition to the resistance. I suggest buying this one first before buying the other expansion. They also added some resistance members and spies with different artwork to expand the "cast" of the resistance and make them more diverse. In addition, all modules are compatible with plot cards to add even more variation. I certainly recommend this expansion as a must buy for any resistance fan.

Indie Boards & Cards The Resistance The Dystopian Universe

The resistance pits two opposing factions against each other: the resistance fighters and the government spies. Either team wins by either faction winning or failing 3 missions. The resistance wins by completing 3 missions, while the spies win by failing 3 missions out of a total of five missions. The game begins by randomly passing out player cards of either resistance fighters or spies. For a 5-6 player game there would be 2 spies while a 7-9 player game having 3 spies and a 10 player game having 4 spies. The games are balanced by the number of spies as well as the number of people that can take part of a each mission. The game starts by the mission leader selecting people for the mission. The entire group of people playing then votes whether the group is good for the mission either by "accept" or "decline". If half or more decline the mission then it moves on to the next team leader. If 5 missions are declined in a row then the spies win. When the mission starts the players in the mission are given "success" or "fail" cards. The resistance must vote for the mission to succeed. If you are a spy, however, you can vote for the mission to fail or succeed. The vote cards are put in a discard pile and a voting pile. The dealer shuffles the voting pile and then lays out the cards. What i love about this game:. (1)if a single fail card is played then you know that one of the people on the mission was a spy. (2)if you are a good liar you can win. (3)the "accept" or "decline" tokens are brilliant because they help you determine the motives of certain individuals: "only a spy would decline this mission" or "only a spy would accept this mission", ect. , things like that. Overall i feel the game is well balanced:sometimes the spies win, sometimes the resistance wins. It's not too complicated and i'm sure your drunk friends could figure it out.

The resistance is a very intense game of secret identities deductiona and deception for 5-10 players.

Indie Boards & Cards The Resistance The Dystopian UniverseIndie-Boards-Cards-Resistance-Dystopian

The Resistance Dystopian Universe (Indie Boards Cards) FAQ.

Playing:. A great party game when you have 5-10 people. Game plays relatively quick, with most of our games lasting between 15 and 30 minutes. Quickly players can get into the shoes of the treacherous spies or the valiant resistance fighters. Players are assigned to one of two teams (spies or resistance) and using social deduction, try and figure out who each other are. Have played it in multiple countries and no two groups play quite the same. The inquisitor is an interesting addition for experienced players. . Craftsmanship:. This is a real high quality game. Pieces are thick and durable. Artwork is attractive and helps players to understand the game mechanics. . Verdict:. Buy it and give it a try. Unless. You're a spy. That's something a spy would say. -Notice from B. Rita, Southend-on-Sea

This is one of the most fantastic party games i can imagine. It's easy to learn, but incredibly intense to play. It scales to accomodate lots of players, but doesn't really take more time in doing so (it depends on how long everyone spends talking to each other about each mission). Outwit your hidden enemies and discover your allies or employ the most cunning deception and subtlest of feints to foil everyone's plans. . The resistance has but one goal - weed out the spies and avoid taking them on missions at all costs. . The spies, however, have two options for victory - make 3 of the 5 missions failures, or stall the game through 5 rejected votes for mission team members. . This game is all kinds of glorious. As the resistance, you always get this story that leaves you in either shock (failure) or smug satisfaction (victory) at the end when you discover who were the spies all along, or as the spies feel an overwhelming sense of pride as you watch the resistance tumble blindly - despite their best cautions - into the last of your well-laid traps. . The game is balanced, fairly quick, incredibly intense, and altogether a blast to play again and again. Its small size makes it easy to take everywhere, too, so i love bringing it along to anywhere we might get a chance to play it. Buy this game. It's worth every penny.

The-resistance-dystopian-universe-(indie-boards-cards) set picture

- M. DorothyThis game was my introduction into the addicting world of social deception games, and whenever my friends have get togethers, we ensure there's at least one copy of the game present (there's at least three floating around our friend group). I like to describe it to people who have never played as "mafia or werewolf on steroids. " it's so easy to get passionate about convincing everyone that you're right while playing, and for us, there's one infamous round that went down in history as the one that almost ended friendships two years ago. I must have played this game hundreds of times, and just a few things that have happened while playing: we've been yelled at to quiet down by ras, i now always take advil pre-emptively because i always end up with a headache from screaming at other players to convince them of one thing or another, and can you really say that you've played until at least one person is standing on top of a chair, pointing fingers, and proclaiming their innocence? . . So the game works with cards being randomly and secretly distributed to every player that assign them to either the resistance (good) or the spies (bad). There are up to five missions, and whichever team claims the majority of the misisons is the winner. If only it were that easy. For each mission, the leader (a role that shifts each mission) selects a certain number of players, the whole group votes to approve or reject the leader's choice, and if it's approved, each player on the mission gets a success and a fail card. If you're good, you submit a success card face-down to a pile in the middle. If you're bad, you have the option of submitting either a success or a fail card. When everyone on the mission has submitted their cards, they're shuffled and revealed. The mission passes if there's all successes and fails when there's a fail. But if there's a fail . Who on the mission was the spy who put it in? let the lying and interrogating begin . . I think in our group we've played with every configuration from 5 to 10 players, and it's definitely a lot more fun with more players, but you just have to make sure that everyone's paying attention as the group gets bigger. It's no fun if someone's on their phone while everyone else is arguing and theorizing, it almost feels like you're lacking information. I'd say 7+ players is the most fun. You also have to stress for players not to cheat if they're good by putting a fail card in the middle just to be funny . It really confuses the game and makes it less satisfying for everyone else. Have patience while explaining the game the first time around; sometimes it's even worth it to do a practice round because some of the nuances don't quite make sense until the game is happening. It's very easy to pick up, though, and the games can go by in about 15 minutes depending on how much arguing between rounds is done. . I've seen a lot of comparisons favoring either the resistance or avalon, but i do love both in their own ways. I enjoy that the resistance has plot cards that get distributed at the beginning of rounds, which can sometimes get players feeling more involved. The characters in avalon are a blast, but sometimes if you're stuck without a special role, it's not as fun. With the resistance, at least, you can convince the leader to give you plot cards so you can have some sort of "special ability". It's true that the expansion packs adds the character features of avalon to the resistance, but really, you can't go wrong with either and especially not with both. . Pro tip: i'd recommend getting card sleeves for this game. The ones with one clear side and one opaque side are great for the character cards because you can face the character toward the opaque side so that if they accidentally fall off the table, no one's at risk of seeing your character. It also keeps everything in great shape so you don't have any character cards identifiable by folds or scratches. . Buy this game. It never gets old, and i honestly don't think i've met anyone who's played and not enjoyed it. Very worth the money and, trust me, it'll become a staple of your get togethers quite quickly, too.

Do you like social deduction games? do you like dystopian settings? do you like yelling at your friends and thinking that they're idiots for not believing you? do you like lying to your buddies and making things awkward because you swore on your mother's grave that they could trust you . This time. Only to betray them all for the honor of beating them in a game? if you answered yes to these questions that buy this game! don't get me wrong. If you and your buddies can get over the lies, deception, and flat out betrayal then you will enjoy this game. But be prepared to yell, plead, beg, and basically make a case for why you are not a spy and should be sent on "the mission". Now if these type of things do not appeal to you then do not buy this game. Do not play this game. Go back to ticket to ride, however; if you've ever played werewolf (or mafia) and thought , "that was fun, but i wish i wasn't voted out so early because i was bored for 30 minutes while everyone else played) then play this. You never get voted out. It's not as good as "red scare" from bubser games, but it certainly is fun.

Indie Boards & Cards Coup The Dystopian Universe

Coup: 2-6 players, ages 10+, average play time 15 minutes. . One might scoff at the fact that there s only fifteen cards in the entire game, making the content feel rather light. On the other hand, one could come to appreciate how the game mechanics tie everything together to give it its bang for the buck. I was admittedly skeptical at first $12 for fifteen cards and some plastic coins? what gives? once i actually looked at the rules however and saw just how many actions you could take per turn, i began to see the possibilities both in terms of strategy and bluffing. . I have a feeling that this game won t appeal to people who don t play a lot of poker, or any card game for that matter that encourages people to bluff when their back is against the wall. Coup works better when you have a lot of people playing, but it can and does function as a two player game just fine. My suggestion is that if you do end up playing with four or more players, that you secretly remove a card from the deck so as to prevent people from counting cards as they figure out who has who. . What appeals to me most is the quick play time, what with the recent changes that have come about in my household. Coup allows me to flex my brain without committing myself to an hour or two to some heavy abstract strategy game. It also tests my memory a bit, especially when my opponents use three different character actions in one round without exchanging cards which was the lie? do they know that i caught them? what actions have i taken again and didn t someone use the duke recently to block foreign aid? you see where this is going. Anywho, i found coup to be great as a filler or something to bring out at parties. My recommendation is to give it a spin!

In the not too distant future, the government is run for profit by a new "royal class" of multi-national ceos. Their greed and absolute control of the economy has reduced all but a privileged few to lives of poverty and desperation. Out of the oppressed masses rose the resistance, an underground organization focused on overthrowing these powerful rulers. The valiant efforts of the resistance have created discord, intrigue and weakness in the political courts of the noveau royal, bringing the government to brink of collapse. But for you, a powerful government official, this is your opportunity to manipulate, bribe and bluff your way into absolute power. To be successful, you must destroy the influence of your rivals and drive them into exile. In these turbulent times there is only room for one to survive.

Coup Dystopian Universe (Indie Boards Cards) FAQ.

I was skeptical about this game because i hate games like resistance and avalon, where a few people have special abilities but everyone else has nothing to do except solve the puzzle. I can't express how much i hate these games. But my husband had read about coup and wanted to give it a try, and for the price (online store was having a board-game sale), i couldn't refuse. . The premise is simple and it's very easy to teach new players. Every player has a role (two, in fact), and those roles can change depending on what happens. You can fake being any role, which is the whole point: fake out your opponents so they don't know who you are. Play is fast and simple; you can get through a few games in an hour. Everyone i played this with loved it and had a good time. I have no complaints and highly recommend this as a party game and an alternative to any others who think resistance is meh! -Notice from I. If you're looking for a fun 2-6p (need to accomodate more than that - get more copies of the game or just add marked regular playing cards to it in sets) party game look no further! this game is the perfect warmup/warm-down game for family gatherings or casual hangouts. It is extremely easy to pick up and yet holds a surprisingly large amount of strategy. It's easy to learn, hard to master. . The box is tiny so it's portable and travels easily! the components of the game all fit into the box perfectly. Speaking of the components they are the cards, summary sheets, instructions booklet and tokens. . The card art is perfect and suits the game - definitely admirable even after hours of play. The tokens could've been better but do their job and are sturdy. . Summary: if you want to play a quick game that requires deduction and deception - this is your game. I can only say that playing with quiet/timid people will be slightly frustrating (if they don't talk much) but aside from that - it flows regardless.

- S. CageenI don't really grade games on artwork or durability. I just care about the game play, and this game is incredibly fun. I first played with three people and we laughed super hard while playing. It's a bluffing game, but you aren't actually betting, like in poker, so it's just pure fun and doesn't feel competitive. I've also played a bunch of two-player games and enjoyed that, too. I love the fact that a hand is so quick ( 5 minutes), so it's not a big commitment to start playing. You can just stop whenever. . When first learning, it may seem like there are a lot of rules, but after one evening it is easy to internalize them. Anyway, the game has a bunch of summary cards to hand out to players, and the cards themselves say what they can do. What makes the game so fun is that the cards have such incomparable powers, yet in the end it's pretty well balanced-whatever cards you start with can be a winning hand if you play it right, bluff at the right time, and aren't too unlucky about what the other player has. You can lie flagrantly and often get away with it, but when a ridiculous bluff is uncovered, it invariably cracks everybody up. Again, because no money is at stake and you typically play a bunch of independent hands in an evening without keeping score, it's just super light-hearted fun. . My friends and i now sometimes play coup with a regular deck of cards, too, just using 10, j, q, k, a of three suits for our 15 cards, so you don't really *need* the official game. But you should support the brilliant people who designed this game by buying the very reasonably priced original version. Plus with the official version you'll get to enjoy the playing cards that say what they do and the summary cards that help you learn the game and the special coup coins that feel more appropriate than poker chips.

This game is a hit with everyone! great card game about bluffing and taking risks! i had to buy a second one after taking one to work (i work with teens) and the kids wouldn't let me take the game back home. They loved the strategy of lying to win. This game is fast paced and easy to learn. Would definitely recommend!

The F.A.Q. for grifters a dystopian universe game

This is a solid $20 non-collectible deck building game. Think dominion, but way more simplified. The game has a pretty easy learning curve, so you can start playing pretty much right away; but there are a lot of techniques and skills that become more obvious as you play through many games. Like carcassonne, it is simple on the surface, but pretty complex and cutthroat for veterans. . I equate this game to fluxx in the "feels" category. It feels like fluxx in that you can drop a bunch of newbies into a game, give them a run through, and then have a lot of fun. Each game ends up being a little different due to the random nature of your hand (3 cards you always start with, but the others are random). . The theme is a lot of fun and the art is very appropriate for the style of game. The designers obviously spent a lot of time play testing and it shows. Highly recommended!

Best grifters a dystopian universe game (indie boards cards) in review

I love, love, love this game! on the surface, i was expecting a pretty straightforward, heavily-luck-based game that would incite a few (fun) debates here and there but was quite pleasantly surprised. Both the story and the gameplay are very solid and very entertaining. . Story. . First, i have a soft spot for dystopian universes so i have an admitted bias. That said, i think this game has some really unique gameplay where you assume the role of criminal trying to pull off jobs and steal from other players. The jobs and stories are a lot of fun and it feels like an adventure. I love it. . Gameplay. . At first glance, i expected this game to play out as something where everyone was stealing from one another with constant tide shifts as your fellow players wage underground war. While that's not entirely inaccurate, there's far more strategy to it than you'd think. This game gives you a somewhat unique ability to recover your played cards as the game goes on but those are also open for theft. You can strategize by taking advantage of others' teams (or lack thereof) as well as how you build your hand. There are definitely upsets as well as individuals act on your cards, each other, and jobs that break your strategy you've been working on for a few hands. It's a ton of fun. . The play is fairly fast and easy to understand as well. A first game runs a bit longer - as you'd expect - but the rules are short and easy to follow. There's very little prep needed as well, making it a fantastic game for 'adult game night' where attention spans may be shortened and/or people aren't looking to make the investment of a few hours of game play. . Summary. . In all, this is definitely now one of my new favorites. It does have some similarity to other indie games titles (like coup) which can be taken as both better and worse. It is unique in its own way and mirrors what makes those games a hit. Indie games has pulled off a fantastic game with equal parts enjoyment, strategy, and pace; something difficult to do without requiring hours of investment like risk or becoming single- or comedically-focused like cards against humanity or exploding kittens. . If you enjoy the pace and ease of the latter two but wan't something that involves a little strategy with a gritty bent, then this game is for you. Simply fantastic!

Amazing game. I run a club at school and the students really adore this one!

This is one of those "easy to learn difficult to master" games. It is basically a simplified version of a deck building game where you build your deck of characters as the game progresses. There are character cards with different abilities and you get scores for having built a deck with the appropriate color cards and by gaining coins (game currency). Meaning there are a couple of ways to score and win the game depending on your strategy. Hopefully that somewhat makes sense? ultimately for the price i would highly recommend this game. And when you get it and are playing, go after getting as many coins (game currency) as you can. That is how i beat the game developer at his own game at gencon:). Very enjoyable game that isn't overly complicated. I'd recommend for teens and above, which is the appropriate age to pick up the game rules and concepts. This received quite a few accolades at gencon which i felt were well deserved. Cheers, . Bsr

This game is so much fun! it's like risk combined with a strategy card game. It's only for 4 players, which kinds sucks for larger gatherings or parties, but it is still crazy fun! it goes kinda quick with only 2, but i imagine 3-4 would be a longer and even more challenging game. I love this, and if you're a fan of dystopian stories/societies (i. E. Hunger games, divergent), you'll love it, too.

J. Ophelia, Middlesbrough

I'm a fan of coup and the resistance, so grifters was a natural to add to my playlist due to my affinity for the universe of those games. Coup is my go-to for quick small groups, and the resistance is my go-to for huge groups, and this game fits beautifully in-between as a slight longer game game (but still very quick) that you can play with two to four players (it was very good with two players, but i'm thinking three players will be even better). . Contrary to what just about everyone is putting in their reviews, this is not a deck builder game. This is a hand builder. And there's a big difference. Deck builders are about building a deck that you then need to draw from, which complexifies and significantly slows down gameplay. Deck building designed make you plan ahead and limits your possible moves per turn, forcing you to learn the cadence of a game and quite often handing victory to the one player who knows when the time is to begin a new phase of deck building (dominion is a really good example of this). . This game, on the other hand has cards in only two states. Either they are in-play or they are in-hand. This means you always have a large amount of options, and cards you acquire can always be played on your next turn unless they get stolen, etc. For people who don't have the patience for deck builders or like them but wish they were faster, this results in a much faster play experience, which in turn is a lot less frustrating for many. . Game mechanics. . I appreciate how the designers of this game beautifully combined multiple game mechanics yet kept them all very simple. You get the "buy property for the end of the game" mechanic form games like the old parker bros "billionaire" with the job/heist operations you'll use teams for, but the bonuses and theme make it feel more like part of a heist movie. You have the "play this game to steal another card, steal money, acquire cards, etc" aspect of games like dominion, or coup, but again, the theme makes it feel like a gangster movie with characters doing various actions. When you combine these two mechanics, you have a wonderful risk/reward aspect to using a card's power, or using it for a job. Do you go for a job? or attack the other players? fun stuff. My take? this is very compelling gameplay. My wife's take? this is very fun gameplay. . The downside. . The gameplay is really, really easy to learn. The theme is fantastic. The rules are good. The mechanics and actual play is tight and smooth. There's very little confusion. Setup is a breeze. There is exactly one thing about this game i do not like. The artwork. It's not bad. It's just not "great". With the amazing artwork in coup: rebellion, coup, and the newer cards for the resistance, i was expecting better. What i would most like is something more akin to fantasy flight's artwork in the android universe (netrunner). . If this game gets re-released with better artwork i'll get it again. If expansions get released i'll definitely buy them. If you like the artwork or don't care this is a must-purchase if you like heist themes and dark sci-fi. If like me you don't for the artwork you might want to wait for a release with better artwork as i know the publisher can do better. In either case, if you like hand builders like treasure hunter, like games like billionaire, or need a quick, but not coup-quick game, this is a highly recommended.

Q. Carrie, Nevada says

This game is awesome. Everyone i've played with either wants their own copy or has one already. One of the few games that is never decided until the last play is made.

I. Tracey, Newcastle upon Tyne

After deciding to buy this game on a whim, we played a couple of 2-player games and it is quickly becoming one of our new favorite games. We then played several 4-person games and it was even more fun, since there are more people to steal from and additional capers to perform. Even after playing through two times, we still came across a couple of new "specialists". . The cards are of good quality and and the artwork and characters are awesome and in keeping with the dystopian theme of the game. I will be keeping my eyes open for an expansion pack to be able to play in larger groups of 5-6 players. . Highly recommended!

G. Crawford, Pays de la Loire says

Cool game easy to play and have fun!

X. Valencia, Yukon Territory

One of my new favorite board games! the deck-building mechanism is really great because you can manage your own strategy without *too* much sabotage from your opponents. As with everything in the dystopian universe, the art is beautiful and the game flows very nicely. It's very different than other games within the universe. The only criticism i have is that it would be nice for there to be more options for the objectives.

L. Barbara, Wokingham says

Grifters is a breath of fresh air in the genre of deck/hand building. I was a kickstarter backer, and couldn't be happier with the purchase. The artwork and card quality is superb, and the component quality is as well. I am continually more and more impressed with indie boards and cards. And the gameplay is so fresh and unique. Overall, this makes for a wonderful experience of a game that plays in about 30 minutes, give or take. . In grifters, you each start with 6 specialist cards that allow you to recruit more cards (specialists, or criminals, as i like to say) from the deck. These cards will have a vast array of abilities, some gaining you currency/vp in the form of "m-isk, " while others may mess with your opponents, play cards from other players, recruit more cards, and so on. Some really fun combos here. . The really unique mechanic in grifters is the use of the player mats, that basically after you play a card, your criminal now has to proceed through this "hideout" for the next 3 turns, and so essentially is out of your deck/hand as far as playing purposes go. This adds a type of "cooldown" process to any cards played, and you have to wait for them to "refresh" in order to be used again. Opponents can know which cards are in your hideout by looking at your mat, and vice versa (they are played face up). Each turn, your criminal will then proceed to the next space of the hideout, and this frees up opportunities to play others in the previously occupied space(s). It also allows for other people to possibly mimic what you have in your hideout. . There are also essentially 'mission' cards, called jobs, that you need combos of colors (blue, red, and green) from your criminals to acquire, and these give you points/bonuses depending on which ones you gain. There are 20 different job cards, and you only have 5 in play, so game play will change every game, making for good variety and replayability. . Game end can trigger in a few different ways, and once it does, the player with the most money/m-isk wins! . . Note: it should be noted that there were numerous promo cards from the ks campaign that may not be in the retail version, so i'm not sure if you'll receive everything that ks backers did. Not atypical of a ks campaign. These aren't necessary, though, and the game should still be a blast without them.

M. Nellie, Haringey

Indie boards & games has been killing it lately. Aeon's end has lately become one of my favorite games, and it's because of aeon's end that i wanted to check out something a little quicker from them. . Enter grifters. . Grifters is, essentially, a fast playing 'filler-style' game about being the best gang of criminals. It's a card game that scales incredibly well and has really appealing art, but what continues to have me coming back for more is the gameplay. As stated, the game scales really well from 2-4 players, with competition of grifting jobs increasing the more players you have. . The game is a set collection game with variable character powers, and the really great thing about it is that it has the slightest bit of programming to it as well. As you add more members to you grifting crew, you have more options to send folks on jobs. However, completing jobs, fencing the items, and getting back to your safehouse without incident takes some time, so planning which characters you use, and when, is incredibly important. . Even as important is paying attention to what your opposition is doing, because many of the character powers allow you to mess with them. This can be in the form of stealing crew members, or more powerfully, rearranging their well planned wait time. See a crew of four grifters getting ready to return for another job? a well timed card can send them to the back of the queue and allow you to take that big job you were looking at. . Overall, grifters is a really excellent, incredibly easy to teach filler game that has a place on all game shelves. It's good looking, fast, and scales well. And it has great gameplay. . Highly recommended.

G. Cassella, Waltham Forest says

Great game. Immediately was a favorite in our gaming group. The gameplay is unique and compliments other card games. I wish the cards were standard size; they are oversized which becomes a little obnoxious. . The down side is the games take on a little sameness. This would be a prime candidate for an expansion with additional characters or different jobs.

S. Audrey, New York

This is a easy to learn hard to master deck builder, with none of the typical deck builder nonsense that causes most deck builder games to grind their way to a fun mid/late game. . Here's the gist: 2-4 players each start with 6 cards, 3 that are identical for each player, and 3 random cards. Cards are currency, you use them to complete missions, which provide bonuses at the end of the game, but here is the kicker, every single card also has a power. This creates a unique dynamic while playing that allows you to create strategies on the fly to counteract what other players are doing. Right from the first turn players will be completing missions or stealing. No silly nonsense where you try and get rid of cards because they are your starter cards. . The trick is finding a balance of stealing from the other players, while also setting yourself up with the potential to swoop in at the last moment and prevent players from getting the largest bonuses at the end of the game. . I've played this three times now, each game with 3 players are each time the game was incredibly close scoring with everyone doing vastly different strategies. . The art work is very cyber noir, its very east to teach, and only takes about 15 minutes to play once you understand the rules and have seen most of the cards. . Definitely worth $20.
