Review for learning resources time student clock
Price was $11.39. Smaller than i thought, but i should have read the specifications. My 4 year old daughter loves to play with it, but it needs to be monitored play. Other reviewers mentioned that forcing the hour hand to move by itself will break it. Still, this is a wonderful resource for my daughter to start having a concept of how analog clocks works. As i said, she keeps asking to play "school" so she can play with her clock.

Learning Resources Big Time Student Clock 12 HR Review (NG-130)
This is exactly what i was looking for. My 5 year old loves it! it seems pretty sturdy and only allows you to move the minute hand, so it shows the kids how moving the minutes also moves the hour hand accordingly. Ours is currently propped up nicely on our kitchen table while my daughter plays with it. It has small numbers around the outside for the the minutes (5, 10, 15, 20. ). This is a great manipulative for kids learning to tell time. -Q. Clara

This simple little clock is a great teaching aid, because of the clockwork mechanics. Teaching my daughter to tell time involved explaining the movement of the clock. And how the minute hand coaxes the hour hand along. . For her, understanding that movement was the key to understanding time. A terrific investment.

Educational Insights Play Money - Coins & Bills Tray
This set comes with $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills. The coins include pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, 50 cent pieces. There are many different sets out there with different amounts of bills and coins, depending on your need. This set contains just enough for my daughter and i to effectively play "store". It will easily support four people's "wallets" with enough left over for change. . This play money is some of the most realistic play money i have seen. It really looks like real us currency, which has helped me "play store" with my daughter and teach her how to count money and make change. It is slightly smaller than real us dollars and change, but because the look is so real, she is easily able to make the transition between real and play money. The paper used on the bills is thick, making it sturdier than other play money sets i have seen. It is even thicker than money that comes with some board games. I highly recommend it for any parent looking for play money to teach their kids about real us currency. . The tray that comes with it is not useful if you want to keep all the bills and coins separate. You will need a separate container because all of the bills stack on top of each other. It also stacks pretty high and full and does not come with a cover, so you can't use the tray to store the money unless you put it somewhere where it won't get knocked over or jostled. It is also thin plastic, and not very sturdy. . I bought the money with a printer calculator and some carbon-copy receipt pads (all available through online store. Com) so we can play "store". This whole "play set" was cheaper than a toy cash register and my daughter can really add up totals and figure out tax, as well as practice her writing skills by using the receipt pad. Just an idea for any parents out there whose kids like to play store as much as mine!
The most realistic play money available. Includes 30 pennies, 30 nickels, 20 dimes, 15 quarters, 5 half dollars, 30 $1 bills, 20 $5 bills, 20 $10 bills, 15 $20 bills, 10 $50 bills, and 5 $100 bills in a storage tray. Ages 5+/grades k+
I purchased educational insights play money and with some extra work these are great for kids and toddlers alike! . . Extras:. I took the time to laminate all the bills (there's one, five, ten, twenty, fifty, and one-hundred dollar bills) and i cut them right along the border. I also purchased a bead's box from michael's craft store and removed some of the dividers to make room for the bills. The box allowed 4 bill compartments and 6 compartments for coins (5 were used for coins and one to store the extra dividers). . About the play money:. Older kids would be able to play with the play money just fine. However, if you want them to be durable i would laminate them. The bills and coins are a perfect replica of real money so this package is very useful for kids as they can learn what real money looks like. The coins are made of a durable plastic and color and shape of the coins are also a perfect replica of real coins (you could almost confuse real pennies for the play money pennies). . Storage:. The play money comes in a flimsy disposable plastic container that can be used for short term storage. You will need to purchase other storage solutions unless your "cash register" is big enough to hold all of the bills and coins. -Notice from F. Anonymous, Wisconsin

Actually looks just like real money! everything, front and back! so much better than expected! size is a but smaller than real but the look is exact! coins look exact too but are very lightweight and plastic. Bills are printed on heavy paper, nothing like the cheap monopoly-printer paper money, this is much better quality. Definitely recommend!
- L. CassellaThese bills are almost identical to real us dollars except they are smaller. Sometimes my son leaves them around so when i walk by i have to double-take to ensure there is not actually real money on the floor. When people visit my home they look at me weirdly because they aren't sure why i have bills randomly on my kids' art table. . Unfortunately, these coins are not recognized by my son's learning resources teaching cash register. The coins fit into the slots fine but the monetary denominations are recognized and verbalized incorrectly. For instance, when you place a quarter inside it tells the child it is a nickle. . Other than that, this money is great! i mostly love it because it teaches how to count money with tools that really look like money. I feel this is far better than teaching with colorful monopoly type money which can be confusing or real money which is dirty.
I love this pack! i use it for so many things with my 2. 5 yr old. We play "shop for groceries" using only $1 bills and pennies for now. We are basically learning counting and along with that, she is starting to understand the value of currency. . I also use this as a way reward system for potty training. We made a little home-made piggy bank where she collects her pennies for every time she uses the toilet. As she reaches a certain amount of savings, i give her the option to buy 2 tiny m&ms for 5 pennies. I know i'm totally ripping her off, but hey she gets chocolate and learn to save money for something she wants!

The F.A.Q. for Learning Resources Big Time Student Clock 12 Hr (NG-130)
As you turn the minute hand one full revolution, the hour hand auomatically advances one full hour. This really helps the child understand the relationship between minutes and hours. . Also the hands are color coded: red hour hand goes with red numbers, blue minute hand goes with blue numbers. If i were designing a teaching aid this is exactly what i woul design. . I was expecting it to be bigger, but the size has proven to be completely adequate. . Kids tend to want to push the red hand around, but the red hand is not made to be pushed. This has not yet broken the clock, though it seems like it could break it if a child continues pushing it around. (i think you are supposed to push the blue hand only. ). . I would definitely buy again.

(note) Question: where/how to get Learning Resources (manufacturer's brand) accessories & similiar Learning Resources's products
I bought this clock to help my 6 year old granddaughter learn how to tell time and i am very pleased with it. I use it as a learning tool rather than a toy. With my guidance she can move the hands and count the minutes and see how the hour progresses. I don't give it to her to play with because i know it would get broken but it is perfect for use under supervision.

Good learning tool. Love that the hour hand moves with the minute hand. It shows true clock movements to help understand how the hands relate to each other and the different colors help keep them distinguished from each other. It also has large sized numbers for the hours as well as minute markings and numbers every 5 minutes, and they are color coded with the hands, (blue hand and numbers for the minutes and red hand and numbers for the hours). My 5 year old likes it and is catching on fast.

The only thing i didn't like is that you have to spin the minutes hand to change the hour so if i have it at noon i have to spin he minutes to get to 6 pm other than that great

This product is cheap but does what i needed. I homeschool and my kids were having trouble with telling time from an analog clock. I got this because it has gears and the hour hand has the proper spacing between the hours. They loved it and actually played with a bit when studying this area. I wanted a cheap one since they learned it, got the concept, and moved on to other things and i wasn't out a ton of money for the experience. This worked well for the kind of drills a worksheet cannot provide.
D. McCarthy, Leicestershire says
My 3rd grader is learning about time right now in school. She s finding the story problems very difficult. My husband and i are finding that it s very hard to try to help her work through problems without some kind of visual aid. I looked to trusty online store to see what we could get that would be helpful. This has turned out to be the best learning tool we ve ever purchased. I m particularly happy that turning the minute hand all the way around the clock advances the hour hand. It helps when we are working through problems. . I use it to quiz her, i ll set the time and have her tell me what time it is, or i ask her to set it to a time. Then we can work out story problems together. Like if you want to be done with your homework by 6:15 and you have 25 minutes of reading to do, 15 minutes of science and 40 minutes of math, what time do you have to start your homework? these story problems used to end in a lot of frustration on all our parts. Now she takes her little clock and sets it for the time and moves the minute hand backward (or forward depending on the problem) to help her find the answer. I see that she s more of a visual learner and this clock helped out a lot with that. So much so that she offered to pay me back for it, i of course declined, but it goes to show the value if your kiddo is struggling. . I saw that other reviewers have mentioned that the minute hand gets off sync with the hour hand. Ours hasn t had that problem, but i told my daughter to only ever move the minute hand and never try to hold the hour hand in place while moving the minute hand. It seems like it would be easy to realign them, but i m not sure and i m not willing to experiment on my perfect functioning clock. It also is a little smaller than i imagined it would be, but it s perfect for little hands and the size makes it easy to store. I m very pleased that it has a removable stand, it keeps it in a good position to see when doing homework.
Y. Paula, District of Columbia
I got this because one of my children was having a hard time with learning to tell time on an analog clock. I really like it that the minute and hour hands are color-coded to the corresponding areas on the clock face. The hour hand is red and so are all the big numbers. The minute hand is blue and there is a blue ring around the hour numbers that show the minutes. That's great since one of the problems was remembering which hand went with hours or minutes. . The clock itself is smaller than i expected but it does state correctly in the description it is 5". I guess i let the picture look bigger than it was. :) this clock can take a lot of abuse and still work fine too. My toddler loves playing with this. . *update* 2/19/2011. We still use this clock a lot. It's very handy to have around. I keep it in the top drawer (literally) of our school supplies so the kids can get to it easily if needed. After this time however, the minute hand doesn't keep track as accurately as does a real clock anymore. It's about 2 minutes or so off, which is frustrating when you're trying to teach accuracy. I probably just need to go get a screwdriver to tighten it in a bit but i haven't done that (yet. ). . Overall, i would still buy this again in a heartbeat. It's a great tool that my kids actually enjoy using.

I've bought 4 of these learning resources clocks over the year. I keep coming back. They're well made and colorful. They are super easy to clean and operate. . I love that the hands work in conjunction with each other (if you turn the minute hand the hour hand moves independently). Also, the clock is color coded for hours and minutes. This is great because it links with other learning resources tools. They have a many sided dice that also has the hours and minutes color coded so that you can roll the dice and then set the clock time. It's visually and physically stimulating and a great way for the kids to learn time. . We homeschool and have done so for almost 6 years. I'm on my 3rd kiddo to use this now and i bought this clock so that they won't have to fight over class supplies. . Totally happy and would buy a hundred more of i had a need for them.
I. Glenda, St. Helens says
It took me forever to find a learning clock where the hands actually moved as a clock is supposed to. I tried three other learning clocks before this, and all of them had hands that moved independently of one another. This made it challenging to actually demonstrate how an hour goes by as you tick off the minutes (as i tried to explain it to my kindergartener). . Fortunately, a friend pointed me to this clock. So for anyone who is curious: the hands move like a regular clock. By this i mean that if you turn the minute hand, the hour hand will move appropriately with it. . I have no idea why other learning clock manufacturers leave out this important feature, but this clock has it.
G. Josephine, Minnesota
I am working with my daughter on telling time and this clock is prefect. They use one very similar to this in school but this one is actually a little bigger. I was a little worried when i read some of the reviews that it was going to be too small but that is not the case as all. It works great and you can't beat the price.
F. Jessica, Arizona says
My 3 year old son is fascinated with clocks. Got this for him as a present and he loves it. He will set the clock to 9:00 and tell me it's time for school and 6:30 and say daddy is coming home. I really like how the minutes are written in the same color as the minute hand and the hours are the same color as the hour hand. It's a little smaller than i was expecting, but i think that's because i didn't pay attention to the description, it is about the size of a board book. Great little clock!

Despite what the title says, this clock is surprisingly small. For some, that may be ideal. For me, i'm neutral on it - it certainly meets the need for teaching my 5 year old how to tell time accurately. It's a well-thought out idea though, and the hand/time markings that match in color is nice touch for helping kids match the markings with specific hands on the clock.
