Pandemic On Brink Expansion Board Game 2nd Edition (Z Man Games) 3638

Review for pandemic on brink expansion board

Price was 34.99. There is relatively high value in this expansion. You might say you get three more games. Combined with the original, each time we sit down to play, we recognize we have at least 4 games to choose from: the original, mutation, virulent, and bio-terrorist (we've not yet tried the bio-terrorist with the virulent strain in the same game). The event cards are a nice addition, but the 8 new cards don't pack the same value as the original 5, so when we play with just 2 people, we opt for the 5 original event cards.

Pandemic on the brink expansion board game 2nd edition Review (zmg71101)

If you have pandemic: original recipe, this is a must. The new characters alone make this worthwhile. While each one isn't necessarily a game-changer, the number of character combinations is now multiplied greatly, making each game a fresher experience. Even better are the new event cards. Like the character cards, the old ones get boring after awhile. Not only do the new ones add some variety, but the fact that you only use a fraction of the event cards each game makes each game much fresher. The addition of the purple mutation (purpes! ) is a 4-star expansion, but the bio-terrorist game is a 1-star expansion. It's confusing and too time-consuming, and it's not like this is a quick game anyhow. But even if you use neither - we play without the purpes more often than we play with it - it's a necessary expansion. -O. Wayt

A great game. I've included pictures on what i did to make the box organization better. . First i have a large cut out of a index card taped to the back of the bio terrorist pad so i can quickly pull out the pad, 2 rule books, and the game board. . Second, i cut out thin strips of index cards to use to pull out the playing cards. This also keeps all the cards from sliding around while transporting and storing.

Click to see NoticePandemic On Brink Expansion Board Game 2nd Edition (Z Man Games)"Pandemic has become one of my favorite board games, and this expansion is my favorite one for it. Even if you're not up for the increased challenges the infection cards or virulent strain offer, you can still bring a lot of variety to your game with the new role cards. The role cards open all kinds of new strategies and complement themselves as well as the old cards well. For game nerds like me, the balance is spot on though, so these aren't nerfing or overpowering the base game at all. . An added bonus is the box insert and containers that come with this expansion. They've made cleanup and setup much faster. Despite some of the comments i read on the expansion, both this expansion as well as the core game will fit in either the original or "on the brink" box without issue."

Pandemic Board Game

Four diseases have broken out in the world and it is up to a team of specialists in various fields to find cures for these diseases before mankind is wiped out. Players must work together playing to their characters' strengths and planning their strategy of eradication before the diseases overwhelm the world with ever-increasing outbreaks. For example the operation specialist can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases. The scientist needs only 4 cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal 5. But the diseases are out breaking fast and time is running out: the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while also towards cures. A truly cooperative game where you all win or you all lose.

Pandemic State of Emergency Board Game

Myself and a group of friends recently started doing some game-nights to break up the week, so we review the "tabletop" youtube channel quite frequently, and pandemic was one that looked amazing! . . I bought the original game and absolutely loved it. It's a very challenging game, 9 times out of 10 ending up loosing but it's great to play a cooperative board-game for once! . . Got this "expansion" to change the normal game up a bit and that it did. Would highly recommend it! . . Bought it and the expansions that go with it below:. . Saving the world just got a little bit harder! three new challenges await you in this new expansion for pandemic:- the hinterlands challenge: the diseases are spreading from animals to humans. - the emergency events challenge: unpredictable events have nasty effects on the game. Try to use quarantines to stop the spread of disease across the board. - the superbug challenge: a fifth disease that cannot be treated threatens the world! produce vaccine doses after finding its cure in order to fight off this threat. You must eradicate the superbug disease to win.

- X. GilmoreI waited a little before purchasing this new expansion, as i was still having plenty of fun with the previous expansions. While i'm glad i waited, i'm much happier now than i could have imagined. When i first read about this expansion before it actually came out, i was a little wary. It seemed silly, and didn't seem like it would add much compared to the previous expansions, but state of emergency has everything. . Not only does it have a couple of new challenges that are fun, and quite a bit more difficult. It also adds several other elements to make prior expansions easier/ more difficult, and the ability to combine the two difficulty level changers in order to simply add more variety. . While i really enjoy the new challenges, i will most likely be playing the prior challenges with the new elements. It's amazing to see how the emergency event cards make even the regular base game (which i had no reason to play again until now for added difficulty) more fun and challenging! . . As another has commented. Yes, there isn't really any 'added' room to fit everything into one box. But personally, i've never fit everything into one box. Between 4 boxes for storage, there is no problem with having enough storage room. If really needed, i'm sure it could easily be combined into two boxes. . Another counterpoint to a prior commenter. Yes, new material. Which is a good thing, in my opinion, as some of the color pieces are so close in color, it's a bit difficult to tell them apart. Which that in itself is the only negative thing i can even think of about the pandemic games. . Another wonderful thing about this particular expansion, is that you don't need the prior two expansions for compatibility. The rulebook provides the play and rules for this expansion alone, along with tons of varying points in case you do have the other expansions. I believe that i now have enough variety and choices of pandemic games to last me for years to come with all the additions of state of emergency!

"on the brink" and "in the lab" are such game changers in very interesting ways that they are the superior expansions. "state of emergency" is unfortunately not as good, but it still has its interesting bits. The hinterlands module, while an interesting concept, adds too much clutter to the main board, and the relatively slight change in overall game play is not worth the extra clutter and extra footprints of the two new boards that only have two cities each on them. The quarantine markers also only seem to impact the game in a minor way. However, the super bug challenge is quite interesting, and new roles are always fun to try out. In the end, it's pandemic, so it's still going to be fun and i am glad i have it, but this expansion is the most passable if you're not going to cave and buy them all. My expectations were set high by the previous expansions, so i almost gave this 3 stars, but i concluded that it was probably 4 stars after all.

Pandemic Legacy Red Board Game

Wow! my kids got this for me christmas 2015, and we have been playing it this year as defined in the rules. Oh yes, 'the rules', they are intricate and i am only able to keep up with every detail because this is a cooperative game. So far we have won 7 out of 10 playing sessions and succeeded to meet our objectives all but one month. (the faded figures caught us off guard and has proved to be our biggest challenge since 'invading' the yellow region. ). Enough about our problems. This is a bit of advice to you: learn how to play pandemic (we also expanded our original game set with on the brink and in the lab) before even thinking about legacy. And play the game with a team you can work with. Read the rules closely and read them again before each playing session. Make sure everyone remembers the details about their character and their relationship with others. Believe me when i say that every detail will have an influence on whether you win or lose. Yes, some details will hurt you, but more often than not you will find yourself in dire straits if you ignore, forget or simply overlook a minute instruction that was intended to help. Do we recommend this game? highly! are you capable of winning? that depends on you and the draw of the cards. Draw two epidemic cards back to back and it will test your mettle to its limits. Run or you will be scarred for life. Utilize your capabilities or your team will suffer. Don't think for a moment that you have things under control. Outbreaks will be your ruination if you don't plan for every contingency. May i remind you, this is pandemic at its worst or should i say its best. ? . . Adding my end of year note: we finished the game and saved the world for future generations. Based on the scoring tiers at the end of the game we finished just shy of the top level. This was a family night for the entire year 2016 and it was a challenge, but every episode enjoyable. Still a five star game for our group!

The world is on the brink of disaster. In pandemic legacy, your disease-fighting team must keep four deadly diseases at bay for a whole year. Each month will bring new surprises, and your actions in each game will have repercussions on the next. Will you let cities fall to the diseases? will your team be enough to keep the viruses at bay for a whole year? craft your own unique pandemic experience with pandemic legacy.

Pandemic Legacy Red Board Game (Z Man Games) FAQ.

The big draw for me was the long-term consequences of one's decisions. Events and actions taken early in the campaign matter all the way to the end of the game. Plus, how often do you get a chance to have permanent component change during a campaign? destruction of components, additions, amendments, more additions - the little surprises with each month of play added a frisson of anticipation. It was the boardgame equivalent of an advent calendar, and i found that quite cool. . The price can be daunting, but look at it this way - divide it evenly among your core players, and it becomes quite affordable. . Drawback - this is a commitment of time. For best effect, all players involved really need to play through the entire campaign, which will be 12-24 full game sessions. -Notice from I. Widmer, Islington

This game is absolutely amazing. My boyfriend and i just started playing it and have finished through february of the "12 month" campaign so far, and when i woke up this morning, the first thing i said to him was "i want to play more pandemic. ". . We had never played pandemic before, so we did a few practice rounds first without the legacy rules in effect. Feeling pretty comfortable with it, we moved ahead in the campaign. Opening the special boxes and putting stickers on the board feels like christmas. The first time it told us to destroy a card, we looked at each other wondering who was going to be brave enough to rip it up. The way new cards are entered into play, with rules changing permanently (or at least seemingly permanently) as you go, objectives changing and adding on to one another, makes each game a unique experience with changing strategy. There are funded events, characters added into play, upgrades and scars added to characters, mutations added to the diseases, and at the end of each game, depending on whether you won or lost, your funding either goes up or down, which will make the next game either easier or harder. I don't know how anyone could go back to regular pandemic after this. . At first i hadn't wanted to buy both pandemic and pandemic legacy, but now i think i understand the need for both. As the game's board changes and is modified, i think we'll need a regular pandemic board (and the expansions! ) for playing afterward. Though maybe we'll need to keep some of the new modifications we learned in legacy? only time will tell. . Next week, i'm starting a new legacy campaign with four players. I'm hoping that is even more exciting (will report back soon), but for now, i'm happy to have found a complex and engaging co-op game for two players. . Update:. And for people wondering if you can start over with the legacy campaign after you finish the 12 months, my feeling is that the answer is no. Even if you don't destroy cards, some of the changes are somewhat permanent, adding new rules at certain stages or placing new stickers over the old ones. Each time there is an outbreak in a city, it gets a sticker permanently leveling it from 1-5 (rioting to destroyed) which changes the play. So even without destroying cards, you're using the stickers. I don't think you could play through it again after you finish as the 12-month campaign, but i figure it is likely that whatever state the game is in by month 12, you can keep playing that campaign over and over.

- S. HarrisonThis game is amazing. . Super important note: if you've never played pandemic wait on this. While the rule book in this version of pandemic states that you can technically use this version of the game to play the original i don't recommend it. While, yes, you technically can, you will find yourself frustrated and confused because there are a lot of extra pieces and things in the box for the legacy story mode, if possible you really would be best to just buy the original and have about 4-5 play through's before considering this. You need to understand the purpose and the mechanics of the original before attempting this. . With all that said and no spoilers: this game is absolutely phenominal. I don't take it lightly when i say this may be the best board game i've ever played (and i've played a lot). The depth is insane, the way the story progresses and the game evolves is insane and the way new dynamics are revealed is both realistic to what you would imagine a real-world virus outbreak would look like as well as very understandable as they get added. Plain and simple if you like the original, you'll love this. . One more super important note: it's extremely helpful if you play this with the same group of players through the whole season (not required but way more fun that way since everyone knows the story as it unfolds).

Pandemic is one of my family's favorite games, so when pandemic: legacy was announced in 2014 it immediately went to the top of my wishlist. Let's get the conclusion out of the way first: if you like pandemic, you will almost certainly love pandemic: legacy (with one caveat - see below). As of this writing, it's the second-highest ranked game on boardgamegeek. . If you're not familiar with pandemic, what you need to know is that it's a cooperative game - all players win or lose as a group. You take on the roles of various scientists working for the cdc, traveling around the world and dealing with epidemics. There are four diseases spreading through the world, and you must discover cures to all of them before it's too late. . Pandemic: legacy takes the base pandemic game and turns it into a campaign, where each game affects all the ones after it. Ignoring outbreaks if you're close to winning is no longer a smart move, because those outbreaks will make your life more difficult in the following months. The game takes place over the course of a (game) year: you play a game in january, and if you win, your next game will be february; if you lose, you play a second game in january (and then go to february regardless of the outcome). In this way, a full campaign will take between 12 and 24 games depending on how well you do. The legacy deck controls various events that come up; you simply draw cards from it until you reach a stop sign, which will tell you when to start drawing again (the first one says to draw it before playing your first game). At the start of play, the game is essentially the same as regular pandemic, but the cards will let you open envelopes and boxes with additional components, rules, and stickers. . Wait. Rules and stickers? yes, many things that happen during the game will require altering the board and rulebook by placing stickers. You'll write on cards. If things go badly, you'll tear up cards. I don't want to put spoilers in the review, so i won't tell you about what's coming up, but there have been more than a few cards that made me go "oh *" when i read them. Your decisions absolutely matter - not only will screwing up make future games harder, but making a good play can make future games a lot easier. You should have seen what our super-powered medic did in a recent game. . There's a story woven through the campaign, that explains everything that's going on (it doesn't just get more complicated for no reason - it gets more complicated for very good reasons). If you like theme in your games, they're really pouring it on. Not many games from the last few years have excited me, but pandemic: legacy does; it gives me the same feeling as the trauma center wii games did, where you're involved in a suspenseful story. . The one thing that seems to turn some people off is that this is a one-time-play game. You're putting stickers on the board. You're ripping up cards. At the end, you'll have a copy of pandemic which is unique to you alone. I've actually purchased two copies of the game because i expect i'll want to play it more than once - the two boxes differ only in the box design, and have the same contents (but red is clearly better ; -)). However, someone on boardgamegeek has uploaded a set of sticker files that will allow you to do a full reset if you so choose - just don't rip anything up and you can play through the whole campaign as many times as you like. But the designer has confirmed that he's already working on season 2.

Pandemic Reign Of Cthulhu Board Game

If you like the cthulhu mythos and want to play a game set in it, but don't like the tedium and complexity of clunkier games like arkham horror, then pandemic reign of cthulhu is an excellent choice. It's built on the pandemic mechanics, but with an eldritch horror flair that plays out quite well. . Instead of dealing with a worldwide plague of disease, you instead take on a plague of evil in a more localized setting, focusing on the new england towns of arkham, innsmouth, dunwich, and kingsport. Players travel around the board dealing with cultists and shoggoths while attempting to close four gates, the only win-condition of the game. In contrast, there are quite a few different ways to lose, keeping the tension high and making for an ultimately frustratingly fun game. Sanity mechanics allow for players to go crazy while still having an effect on the game, and an increasing number of old ones and elder gods showing up ramps up the difficulty tremendously. . The game isn't too difficult to set up, and the rules easy to understand and locate what information you need on the spot. There are far fewer bits to keep track of than arkham horror, and the game as a whole sets up and plays out in about the same amount of time it takes neophyte players to simply get to game start on arkham horror. . Overall, quite a fun game even when you lose. Pandemic reign of cthulhu keeps you coming back on the hope that this time, just maybe, you might actually seal that last gate before you're overrun.

Beings of ancient evil, known as old ones, are threatening to break out of their cosmic prison and awake into the world. Everything you know and love could destroyed by chaos and madness. Can you and your fellow investigators manage to find and seal every portal in time? hurry before you lose yourself to insanity.

Pandemic Reign Of Cthulhu Board Game (Z Man Games) FAQ.

Fantastic adaptation of cthulhu mythos to the always fascinating format of pandemic. First timewe played was at gencon, looking like the 4 of us were going to win, when all of a sudden everything went south in one turn where we kept having to turn over extra old ones finally reaching good olde cthulthu himself, thereby losing the game. Great! . . I love all the pandemic games(except contagion, which i need to give another try). This game is right up my alley though due to the theme. I love the arkham/eldritch horror games, but they take way too long. This game condenses those games, adds the pandemic elements, and really delivers on all levels. Arkham/eldritch players will recognize some of their favorite characters like the magician, aka dexter drake. Having only 4 sanity tokens to keep track of is great as well, even though you can lose them very quickly with a bad roll or being in the same space with a shoggoth. I have played this twice since i received it yesterday, lost twice, but had a lot of fun playing. The old ones are not to be disturbed apparently.

- J. JosephineThis stand-alone game at first glance might seem very different than its panemic naming, but quickly becomes more obvious as you read through it. It's a great game, and plays exceptionally well; it was a big hit at game night, and several of us now have copies of our own after having such a great experience playing it. . It's also quite hard to win, depending on which elder gods get woken and in what order. A great, challenging experience.

This was more fun than expected, of course i ended up playing with a host of mythos fanatics who quickly dove into the gameplay. While similar to the original pandemic, there are enough nuances and variations to this edition to warrant playing and exploring fully. It is indeed a separate game, but one can see the pandemic dna woven throughout. An entertaining game through and through, it would likely be accessible even to non mythos fanatics, but you'd have to ask one of them.

The F.A.Q. for pandemic on the brink expansion board game 2nd edition

Pandemic is one of my favorite games and does not need to be expanded. However, if you feel like the game is a little stale like you've played it so many times that you need new challenges or just something a little different, this is almost a must-have expansion. In this box are several new role cards, a 5th infection cube color, a 1-vs-all variant, cards to make a disease tougher, and a box insert that lets you store the base game, this expansion and the 2nd expansion: "in the lab" (fitting all 3 expansions with the base game is quite difficult). . The 5th cube color is used in 2 new game variants: bio-terrorist and mutations. The 1-vs-all variant has everyone trying to win the game while a bio-terrorist player is also infecting locations. The mutation variant adds a few cards to the player deck and a few cards to the infection discards and drawing one of those cards will add purple cubes to the board. Curing the purple disease is a little harder since there are half of those cubes than the original 4 colors. . This expansion has virulent strain epidemics that can replace your epidemic cards. Instead of just following the basic 3 actions of an epidemic, you now have a new ongoing- or one-time effect like "remove 4 infection cubes from the virulent strain supply". You determine which disease has the least cubes available and dub it the virulent strain the first time you have an epidemic and will make curing that disease harder. . The game comes with more events, roles, and a few blank role and event cards. With all the new events comes a new method in using them: 2 cards per players get shuffled into the player deck before dealing cards. . I like the new roles, the new events, and the virulent strain variant a lot. The bio-terrorist has been played once in the 100 times i've played with this expansion but everything else in the box has definitely been worth buying. If you can only afford 1 expansion for pandemic, this is the one to buy. I recommend this expansion above the other 2; then "in the lab" and "state of emergency" last. (however, all 3 expansions are great and have new variants well-worth the money. )

Everything about this is great. The packaging is superb. The petri dishes for the viruses are great. The plastic packaging to store the disease markers and player tokens is great for keeping everything together. . This expansion includes not just 1, but 3 different sets of add-on challenges to add variety to the game. We've never tried playing with the bio-terrorist yet, but the addition of the purple disease and virulent strains keep things interesting. The news role cards and event add even more variety. . This expansion makes one of the best board games i've ever played even better in nearly every conceivable way.

I've only tried the mutation and the virulent strain challenge but these definitely add another dimension to the original board game. We loved the original board game and we wanted to try out the expansion pack. The added characters and combinations add variety to the game and definitely makes it more challenging after you've mastered the original game. Hours of entertainment and forces the group to work together. Looking forward to trying the bioterrorist version soon.

Pandemic has become a favorite on game nights in my circle of friends, and the on the brink expansion improves the experience in several ways. There are new game modes, new roles, new events, and all of them work well. On the most basic level, the ability to have five players is a big improvement. You have to relearn the board setup some to compensate for how many new events are included to keep from unbalancing the game, but none of the changes are so drastic as to be overwhelming. . Aside from this, most of the new material boils down to making the game more difficult. The most basic form of this is the addition of an additional epidemic card to enable "legendary" difficulty (i think we lost in ten minutes the first time we tried that mode). The virulent strain variation to the rules increases the power of one of the diseases. The mutation variation adds a fifth disease. All of these are good for the increased challenge, but don't really change the core gameplay too much. . The one exceptionally different mode is the bio-terrorist variation, which makes one player an enemy to the rest of the group. I, like many of the other reviewers, love this mode. My friends and roommates don't all agree. It is the type of game mode that certainly has the potential to ruin friendships if you play it too often, but i think it injects some welcome variety into the game. That said, it's totally optional and the expansion has plenty of other improvements to justify buying it even if this game mode doesn't prove to be a hit with your crowd. . As a last, wonderful feature, the game box comes packaged with a tray that is capable of holding the materials not only for the expansion, but for the original game as well. This way you can actually store the original game and the expansion in a single box. It sounds like a small thing, but little touches and details like that are what separate the good game publishers from the great.

Very complicated game to start out with but fun once you get to playing. All the set up pays off though, once you start playing and begin to realize the "powers" different roles have and how they impact the game. It is fun to stategize together as you play the game out. We've never played anything like it before and are totally hooked on pandemic!

G. Harrison, Stockton-on-Tees says

Bought the "basic" game and the "on the brink expansion" together. It is a great game, even if we keep losing! we are playing this as a two player, so it seems like an uphill task defeating four diseases, but it sure gets you thinking! was put onto this from the "tabletop" wil wheaton show. Certainly a good way of working out what games are going to be good!

X. Carolyn, Derby

Phenomenal game to play where you have to work together in order to win against the game. My husband and i play this - works well with just 2 players. I actually already bought one expansion pack too. For couples with a competitive edge that leads to arguments and frustrating game nights, this is the solution to your woes!

S. Jessica, Hartlepool says

My wife received this expansion for christmas, and i have to say, it is my personal favorite. The two expansions each offer 3 new variations of play. We chose to try the bio-terrorist last. It was my brother who chose to be our 'terrrist' first. By the end of the game, feelings were hurt, tears were shed, and people went home mad. The game became so intense because of the cat and mouse of chasing the terrorist that we didn't hear the phone ring or the 3 knocks on the door. This expansion enables a world of options, and the new characters introduce such amazing variation, i say if you have pandemic, this expansion is a must.

C. Irene, Nordrhein-Westfalen

I got this for my dad because he's a fan of the original game. We played with the new event cards and roles, but we haven't tried any of the three challenges yet (he expressly forbid my brother from playing the bioterrorist, actually). The new events and roles are awesome, and really changed the dynamic of the game for our family. In a surprising turn of events, the contingency planner role from the original game became both useful and much more exciting. . Everything from the original game and this expansion store neatly in this box, and the petri dishes are great for corralling all those little disease cubes.

J. Noguera, West Sussex says

This is a fantastic expansion and i highly recommend this to anyone who is buying a first expansion for pandemic. Not only does is add a ton more roles but the box fits all the components from the base game and then some. I also liked how it came with little cases for the cubes. Fantastic!

I. Angelica, Knowsley

Read a review on here that this expansion "destroys families. " i knew i had to buy it. Confirmed. This is the truth. The expansion adds so much dimension to the game - this is my favorite board game, and i didn't know it could get any better.

Great expansion and love the insert tray. It keeps everything together and organized all in one place. Love the new roles and challenges.
