Review for ravensburger 81243 castles burgundy

Price was $28.06. In castles of burgundy, players take on the roles of princess (or princesses, i suppose) in the burgundy region of france, competing to build up their estates. Players accomplish this by developing the land around it - building farms, cities, purchasing trading ships, and the like from the market board and placing them on their player boards. Players acquire victory points as they build their estate, and ultimately the player with the most victory points wins the game. . Most of the game's items are represented through square and hexagonal tokens, which will be placed on the player board around your central castle. The mechanism through which players acquire buildings, build them, trade goods, and do other similar actions is through dice rolls. There are six depots, one for each side of the die, and players trade in a die of the corresponding number to add a tile to their building queue. Once there, the player can trade in another die to place the building in a hex with the corresponding number, as long as it is touching a previously built structure. The buildings all grant some kind of bonus, so the possibilities are endless. Dice also allow you to trade in goods, and if you have a die that you literally can't do anything with, you can still trade it in for workers, tokens that allow you to manipulate dice rolls. That way, even though dice are random, you can mitigate the randomness. . The components are of "pretty good" quality. The tokens are all thick cardboard punchouts and they don't seem flimsy at all. I wish that the player boards were a little thicker, but that would drive up the cost of the game. See, at $30, this is a steal. More on that later. . The artwork is a little bland. The theme on this game works, but it does feel secondary to the mechanics of the game. It is definitely less pasted-on than other euros, but the symbols strewn about the market board and player boards (while helpful) do break up the theme. . My big complaint - there are 18 different kinds of tokens in this game, yet the plastic insert included in the box has five spaces. Either get everything in baggies or buy a plano box. A plano will fit inside of the box. . Otherwise, i recommend this game. It's "thinky", it requires attention to strategy and detail, and while player interaction is limited, it is there in the form of resource denial. This is a fun and deep game that is easy to learn but difficult to master. For what's in the box, and the depth of strategy that you have while playing this, the game is a steal at $30. There are lighter games that give you less that cost more. You can't go wrong here.

Ravensburger 81243 The Castles Of Burgundy Review (81243)

A brief overview of what one gets with this game:. . - cheap cardboard components with glossy thin player mats. - barfy-looking artwork. - a theme so thin it is starving. - two colored six-sided dice are the central component of the game, and they are used to determine your possible actions on your turn. - point salad so severe it is a virtual point salad bar. - fiddly to set up and difficult to put away. . . So did i accidentally give it five stars? no. The castles of burgundy is among my favorite games of all time. I am always willing to play this game. It does not satisfy on any of my more predictable measures of a board game i love, but it succeeds in what a game is ultimately all about - gameplay. Everything in the way this game flows is so perfectly honed that i forgive it for not having much of a theme, for having "goods tiles" that are not even described in any other detail other than the dice number you have to roll in order to sell them, hell, for being centered on dice rolls. . The game is light on strategy but as a tactical game, it is the best i have ever played. For how under-produced the production is, there is always a myriad of decisions that can be made on every single turn. You have fifty decisions to make total in the game, with two dice rolls every single round, with five rounds in every phase (phases not named thematically, but named a, b, c, d, e) - and the goal is to optimize those decisions in such a way that fills your manor with tiles that do have names for theme purpose, but they really amount to nothing more than scoring points here and there. You can use a dice to take tiles offered on the main board that matches the dice number you rolled. You can use a dice to play tiles corresponding to a dice number on your player mat. You can use a dice to sell goods. And you can use a dice to generate two workers (which can modify the number of any dice). Also if you have some silverlings (the scarce money in this game) you can buy from a market in the center of the board. . And that is about it. But it is so fun. Really, really fun. And with how many possible things each tile can do once added to your manor, the way the game comes together, and the paths to victory, can be near-unlimited. All of the different types of tiles can do so many different things, but it never feels overwhelming to learn what they all do, or paralyzing to find the perfect use for them. There is not a linear order that you have to take your actions every turn. The rules are tight, but they are not restricting. . This is a game that has everything i hate in a game, yet totally makes up for it, all of it, with its gameplay design and brilliance. It is a title every tabletop fiend should own, even if they don't usually like euro games. A point salad with all the fixings. -X. Carrie

Ravensburger 81243 Castles BurgundyRavensburger 81243 The Castles Of Burgundy (Switch to Mobile/Desktop Version)

The castles of burgundy is an excellent game! it is very well designed and highly strategic. Each player has his/her own board which represents his/her kingdom/castle/domain. Players take turns selecting tiles to either take to their boards or to play onto their boards (there is a sort of staging area for tiles that have been taken but not yet played). There is an aspect of luck in that the tiles you are allowed to take and play are determined by a dice (2d6) roll; however, the outcome of the game is not highly dependent on luck as there are usually multiple options with each result as well as ways to change the result. . Overall, i'd say this game is fairly complex, but not too hard to learn. The mechanics are quite simple, but the strategy can be quite complex. Beginners could have a good time playing, but would likely be no match for experienced players. The only real downside to this complexity is that turns can take quite a while if any of the players are prone to "analysis paralysis, " due to the number of options available on any given turn. Thus, playtime can vary dramatically on how fast players make decisions. There is a fixed number of turns (25), so the game could go quite quickly if everyone is committed to taking their turns quickly, but that rarely happens.

Click to see NoticeRavensburger 81243 Castles Of Burgundy (Toys And Games)"This is a game that is very complicated. I am 63 and an avid life-long board game player. My 17 yr-old grandaughter and i opened and started doing the prep to play this today. It took us two hours to go through the prep instructions and get all of the pieces ready. There are four sheets of cardboard punchouts; but the hard part was when we started reading the instructions! oh my! each piece is so integral to the play of the game and there were so many options for everything to make the game more in-depth. Perhaps it was because it was late and we were tired, but it overwhelmed us. We decided to play it with the younger children and play it like a bingo game instead for them! the game is made sturdily and will last a lifetime due to its quality; i'm sure if someone likes a very intensive playing/thinking game (even more-so than risk or stratego or careers! ), they would love this game. We cannot imagine children playing it. We have purchased six games from the same company. We love them because they are so different from other board games and play them all of the time, but this one was just too complicated."

Set in ancient rome, trajan is a development game in which players try to increase their influence and power in various areas of roman life such as political influence, trading, military dominion and other important parts of roman culture. The central mechanism of the game uses a system similar to that in mancala or pit-and-pebbles games. This is a euro-style strategy game and playing time is 30 minutes per player.

7 Wonders Duel Board Game

Wow! this is a great game! i have never played 7 wonders and simply bought this game based on the reviews. There is a reason it is rated so high! it is awesome. The variability and mechanics of this game are great. The instructions are fair. I read them several times and there were a handful of times i had to consult boardgame geek for clarity. No big deal. The components are also very good. The only problem i have is my wife keeps beating me:) i highly recommend this game. If you are new to 7 wonders, like i was, watch some tutorial videos on youtube. I found them very helpful. This is my new favorite game!

One of the most celebrated games in the world can now be experienced in a two-player arena. 7 wonders duel takes the game play and excitement of the original and adapts it for one-on-one battles. Take control of your civilization and decide to invest in science, military or prestige. Two new ways to win will keep you on your toes and watching every move your opponent makes. If you fail to build defenses your capital city may be destroyed, but ignore technology and your people may be left in the dark ages. It's a constant tug of war. 7 wonders duel is an exciting new way to play the game that took the world by storm. Great for both fans of the original and those new to the hobby.

See 7 Wonders Duel Board Game (Asmodee) FAQ.

I love 7 wonders. I own every expansion of the game and it makes it out on my game table a lot. Having said that, the 2 player variant in 7 wonders sucked. It took forever to set up and it just was awkward having that neutral city where most of the time my opponent would siphon money from them. So when i heard of 7 wonders duel i was beyond excited. . When i opened the package and brought the components out i was impressed. The military board and pawn look amazing; the wonder cards are sharp. My only complaint is i personally did not like the size of the age cards. I really wanted them to be playing card size. . The game's mechanics is where this game shines. It has a similar feel to the original but it is its own entity. The multiple victory conditions, the unique drafting mechanism, the progress abilities, and the new card effects are just some of the things that make this game different. . I love this game. I play it a lot with my friend. Its easy to set up, and plays quickly once you get a feel for the rules. This game still gets five stars besides the fact of my component complaint. If you have 7 wonders or have always wondered what the game was about, you should buy this game. -Notice from R. Reed, Pennsylvania

We've had the game for awhile now. I like it but don't love it. It plays with a lot of the same aspects as the original 7 wonders. Having a 2 player game is nice and the box is fairly small so we bring it to coffee shops to play sometimes although you do need a larger table to play on to be able to build the card pyramid. I am undefeated at the game still! my husband has almost refused to play with me. Ha! and i like games i win at. However one aspect that we both don't like is the green tokens or chips. We feel like there are a couple powerful ones maybe worth going for but overall we end up never even go for those and instead we trash the green cards for coins usually. I know they threw in the green scientology cards to try to match the original game but it just didn't work as well as we expected. But overall we still like the game but to be honest we probably prefer the 2 player all creatures big and small more as a two player game.

7-wonders-duel-board-game-(asmodee) set picture

- Y. PalmerThis is an excellent re-implementation of 7 wonders for two players. It retains all of the elegance of the original, while adding some new mechanics to balance the game for two players and add some interesting decision points. If you're familiar with the original 7 wonders, it's very quick to learn and plays in about 30 minutes. (if you're not familiar with 7 wonders, you may want to pick that up first, though it plays best with 3-7 players. ) 7 wonders has a two-player variant that was pretty decent, but a little clunky in that it used a third "neutral" player. This solves all of the problems of the two-player version of the original. There is no drafting anymore. Instead there is a card tableau, where cards on top are available and some of the cards are hidden. Now you have to consider not only which cards are best for you and your opponent, but you also must consider what cards you are giving them access to when you choose your card. You can peruse a scientific victory or a military victory (which happen as soon as certain goals are met), or go for the most points at the end of the game. The game so far seems very well balanced, strategic, quick, and fun. Everything i look for in a two-player game.

If you aren't thrilled with the 2-player version of the original 7 wonders game, you'll probably find duel to be a major improvement. Duel pares down some of the complexity of 7 wonders while at the same time adding intrigue. In each of the three ages, a matrix of cards is formed so that only a few cards are available at one time. Many of the cards are also face-down until activated, which creates quite a bit of tension during the game. . There are three paths to victory in duel: producing buildings and wonders, collecting six science symbols, or reaching the maximum level on the military conquest track. I've played about 10 games to this point, and it's clear that setting up production to earn victory points is the dominant strategy. Focusing solely on the science or conquest path can be rough. Be flexible, though - your opponent's moves may point out the best path. . Some ratings. Learning curve: low. Newcomers should grasp the game easily within 15 minutes, even without knowing how to play 7 wonders. Game flow: quick. There are few (but many times tough) decisions to make on a turn. Since this is only a 2-player game, you don't have to wait long for your next turn. Intensity: above average. Even though duel's strategy is rather light, you're often faced with the dilemma of taking a good card while potentially revealing a card that gives your opponent exactly what they need. Replayability: above average. Each game feels different since not all components are in play every time, and the card matrix helps randomize outcomes. Theme: average. During the game, i'm focused more on what the card gives me rather than the building or wonder itself. The original 7 wonders does a little better in this area. Component quality: average. The building cards are of the smaller euro-size, but this helps reduce the size of the card matrix. The box insert is designed well to organize game components. The wonder cards tend to warp over time. . Overall, duel is one of the best 2-player games in my collection, especially if i'm looking for a quick 30-minute game. Strong recommend.

The old sultan just died and control of naqala is up for grabs! the oracles foretold of strangers who would maneuver the five tribes to gain influence over the legendary city-state. Will you fulfill the prophecy?  invoke the old djinns, move the tribes into position at the right time and the sultanate may become yours!   designed by bruno cathala, five tribes is a bit more of a "gamers' game" than days of wonder's standard fare.  the game builds on a long tradition of german games with wooden maples in a unique twist on the worker placement game genre. While the rules are quite easy to learn and understand, implementing a winning strategy will take a calculated approach.  in this worker displacement game, you score by carefully maneuvering the five tribes of maples over the tiles that make up the ancient city-state of the sultanate of naqala. You need to look ahead to determine what moves will not only position you to score well, but put your opponents at a disadvantage. It's when, how and where you dis-place the five tribes of assassins, elders, builders, merchants & viziers that will determine your victory or failure!   included are: 30 game tiles depicting the sultanate of naqala; a bag of 90 wooden maples with yellow viziers, red assassins, green merchants, blue builders and white elders; palm trees, palaces and camels; 22 jinn cards; 54 resource cards, plus 5 djinns, victory coins, scoring pad summary sheets and rules booklet.

Patchwork Board Game

Patchwork seems like a simple concept, but you do have to make a lot of meaningful decisions as you play. The components of the game are great, and the theme is incorporated nicely into the game play. Those "tetris" like quilt pieces have to be fitted onto your quilt square all while trying to get the most coverage you can. Also, the pieces with buttons on them score you extra buttons to buy more pieces with. However, when purchasing pieces to go on your quilt square, you have a "time" price and button price. This can cause you to go further up on the board, and the person who is at the back gets to go next each time. Deceptively strategic for such a simple looking game!

Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. In the past, it was a way to make use of leftover pieces of cloth to create clothing and quilts. Today, patchwork is a form of art, in which the designers use precious fabrics to create beautiful textiles. The use of uneven pieces of fabric in particular can result in real masterpieces and is therefore being practiced by a large number of textile artists. To create a beautiful quilt, however, requires effort and time, but the available patches just do not want to fit together. So choose your patches carefully and keep a healthy supply of buttons to not only finish your quilt, but to make it better and more beautiful than your opponent s.

See Patchwork Board Game (Mayfair Games) FAQ.

This is an excellent two-player game with replay value. People tend to love this game a lot and want to play it again. . It has a "sewing" theme to it. You are trying to fill up your board with the various puzzle pieces (think tetris), each having buttons on them (which equal points/money) that you collect at various points on a time track. The thing of the game is that pieces you might want might cost you more spaces on the time track thus limiting your time further to completely cover your board. At the end of the game you charged buttons for the open spaces left on your board. . If you are seeking a good two-player game to play with non-gamer/gamer friends alike then this will fit nicely. -Notice from Z. Clara, City of Kingston upon Hull

This is a recent game from the highly esteemed german game designer: uwe rosenberg. His previous titles have spanned a broad spectrum of depth and size. Games like agricola, caverna, ora et labora, and le havre are massive, complex games (though all fantastic in their own right). But he also has more compact and accessible games like bohnanza, le havre: inland port and agricola: all creatures big and small. Patchwork fits nicely into the latter category. . Pros:. * easy to teach. Even non-gamers could learn the few rules to the game in about 5 minutes. * highly replayable. * rewarding strategic depth. * great depth/length ratio. You can complete a game in under 30 minutes but still feel like you were able to put a lot of thought into it. * limited choices can help prevent analysis paralysis. You are either taking income or picking a tile. If you pick a tile, you have only three options. Most turns take less than 30 seconds which keeps the game moving quickly. . Cons:. * setup, while not a significant burden, does take a few minutes to get all the components sorted and lined up. * jagged pieces occasionally don't quite fit within each other and can get stuck. * requires a lot of table space for just a two-player game. * perhaps this isn't even so much of a con as an important thing to be aware of, but this game is purely deterministic. Meaning, once the initial setup is complete, there's no inherent randomness to the game. It is just your opponent's decisions and yours. As such, this can lead to a skills gap where a better player can easily beat another player who is not as good or less experienced. This is by no means a flaw of the game-clearly it's inherent to the design-but it's something to be aware of going in. If you want a two-player game that uses randomness to lessen the disparity in player skill, something like jaipur or morels might be to your liking. . In short, this is a fantastic game that should be considered by all board gamers who ever play with just two players. It does a few drawbacks, but they are greatly overshadowed by the low price and tremendous depth and replayability of the game.

- G. EricksonDesigner uwe rosenberg delivery another excellent game in patchwork. Don't let the quilting theme fool you; the gameplay appeals equally to people who couldn't care less about stitchwork. And while the theme isn't integral to the gameplay, it is fun to see a unique theme in the world of board gaming. Patchwork is a strictly two-player game wherein players choose pieces to fill in their boards, collecting bonus points buttons along the way. It is fairly strategic, but not a brain-burner like many other abstracts. It's not like chess where you'll need to think several turns ahead and for several minutes before each move. Rather, it plays at a good pace, with little downtime. Despite being a two-player game, patchwork is rather non-confrontational. Even when you're losing in the game, you rarely feel as though the other player is picking on you. Usually you'll have your eye on obtaining a few key pieces that you need to finish your quilt and nab a better score. I highly recommend patchwork. It's easy to learn an very accessible to experienced and new gamers alike.

A game about quilting. That kinda threw me for a bit but everyone and their sister were raving about it so i had to find out for myself. Turns out, everyone and their sisters were right. . Patchwork is a game for exactly 2 players, ages 8+ and plays in about 30-45 minutes. . How to play. . Thankfully this game involves no actual sewing because the last time i tried that i ended up in the er with a sheepish grin on my face. You ll find patchwork to be a bit different than your average game in both set up and play. To begin with, each player will take a quilt board representing their as of yet not started sewing project. The quilt board is divided up into a number of 1 1 squares. They ll then take 5 buttons (the currency in the game) and a time token. . There s a third board in the game which is the central time board. Players will each place their time token on the starting space of the time board. Now, the most fun setup can really begin. There are a whole bunch of patches shaped, tetris-like tokens that you re going to arrange randomly in a (fairly large) circle around the time board. Locate the smallest patch (a 1 2 square patch) and place the wooden neutral token between that and the next patch, going clockwise. Each of these patch tokens will have a little tag image on it that will show a number next to a button to indicate how many buttons they cost, and a number next to a timer icon, to indicated how many spaces on the time board you ll move your time token if you choose that patch. . Lastly, you ll lay out the special 7 7 bonus token and place the five special 1 1 patches on the time board. . The first thing you should know is that patchwork doesn t necessarily alternate turns. The player who s time token is furthest back on the time board will get the next turn, which could (and will) mean players take multiple turns in a row. . On your turn, you can do one of two things. Advance your time token to the space just after the other player s time token on the time board and get yourself some buttons or take and place a patch on your patch board. . In the first option you ll receive as many buttons as spaces you ve moved to get past the other player s time token advance three spaces, get three buttons. And that s it, since the other player s time token is now behind yours, it s their turn. Remember, buttons are currency in this game. . If you choose to take a patch, you ve got to follow these five steps. First, the patch must be within three patches in front of the neutral token you placed amidst all those patches in the game setup. Second, you ll move the neutral token to be next to the patch you ve chosen. Third, you pay the number of buttons indicated on the patch (some patches are free). Fourth, you will place the patch you just bought on your quilt board. Last, you move your time token on the time board the number of spaces indicated on the patch token you just placed on your quilt board. . Some of the spaces on the time board have some special powers on them. There are five special patches, which are 1 1, leather looking patches. These can only be gotten off the time board, and you only receive them if you are the first to move your time token onto or past them. The second special power are the button icons. If you move past a button icon, you then receive button tokens! look at your quilt board many (but not all) patches will have graphics of buttons sewn into them count each individual button and take that many button tokens. . When you re placing that patch on your quilt board, you have to follow a few simple rules too. You can flip or turn the patch any way you like as long as it fits entirely on the board and doesn t overlap any other patches. That s where the tetris aspect of the game comes in. . Finally, there s a special 7 7 token the first player to fill in a 7 7 grid completely on their quilt board receives this token and scores an extra 7 points at the end of the game. Speaking of which . . End of the game and scoring. The game ends when both player s time tokens reach the last space on the time board and players determine their scores. Add up the number of button tokens you have left, and subtract 2 points for each empty 1 1 spaces on your quilt board. That s your score. If you had for example 11 buttons left and had managed to snag the 7 7 token, you d start off with 18 points. If you had six empty spaces (6*2 12) you d subtract 12 from 18 and end the game with 6 points. . Why you should play. . Answer this question truly and honestly. How many games in your collection have a sewing or quilting theme? now how many games in your collection with this theme are really engaging, allow for some interesting and thinky strategy, have just a bit of a puzzle aspect to them, allow you to build something of substance during the game, and are extremely well balanced? . . Patchwork checks all of these boxes and does so in a really compelling way. You re looking ahead in the patches portion of the table to see where the neutral token will next fall, while trying to calculate how many spaces forward you want to move to get more buttons and maybe grab that 1 1 patch you need to fill in your 7 7 grid so you can finally get that extra points token. You re opponent is doing that very same thing too, and perhaps plotting a way to take two turns before you ll get your next so that the neutral token will skip over that one patch you really need. . It s a lot of fun and sometimes a little frustrating in that good oh, i can t believe you just did that to me! kind of way. I ve enjoyed quite a few games while waiting for another friend to show up or between my wife and i or luca and i. Patchwork hits that sweet spot of a 2 player filler game that doesn t overstay it s welcome and still offers a complete gaming experience. It s what i d expect from uwe rosengberg who s designed (among many, many wonderful games) another tight, small game i love, bohnanza. . Be warned however, for such a small box the game ends up taking up quite a bit of space! it s those patches you ve got to spread about. There s a whole bunch of them! other than that extremely minor thing i don t have much in the way of criticism rather i m still pleasantly surprised that a game with a quirky theme is so much fun.

Terra Mystica Board Game

In the land of terra mystica dwell 14 different peoples in seven landscapes and each group is bound to its own home environment so to develop and grow they must terraform neighboring landscapes into their home environments in competition with the other groups. Terra mystica is a game with very little luck that rewards strategic planning. Each player governs one of the 14 groups. With subtlety and craft the player must attempt to rule as great an area as possible and to develop that group's skills. There are also four religious cults in which you can progress. To do all that each group has special skills and abilities. Taking turns the players execute their actions on the resources they have at their disposal. Different buildings allow players to develop different resources. Dwellings allow for more workers. Trading houses allow players to make money. Strongholds unlock a group's special ability and temples allow you to develop religion and your terraforming and seafaring skills. Buildings can be upgraded: dwellings can be developed into trading houses; trading houses can be developed into strongholds or temples; one temple can be upgraded to become a sanctuary. Each group must also develop its terraforming skill and its skill with boats to use the rivers. The groups in question along with their home landscape are: desert (fakirs nomads) plains (halflings cultists) swamp (alchemists darklings) lake (mermaids swarmlings) forest (witches auren) mountain (dwarves engineers) solitude (giants chaos magicians) proximity to other groups is a double-edged sword in terra mystica. Being close to other groups gives you extra power but it also means that expanding is more difficult.

My kingdom for a camel. Work hard, earn more than your opponent and become the official merchant of the maharaja. At the beginning of the game, three camel cards and two merchandise cards are on the table between the players, who already have five cards in hand. On your turn, you can take some cards or sell some. Each time that you take cards, you can take one or more, however if you decide to take more, then you will have to trade in the same amount of cards from your hand that you take. If you decide to take all camel cards, then they can be used later to trade. You can sell all the merchandise that you want, as long as they are all the same type. For each sale, you will receive tokens with various point values. At the end of the game, the player who has the majority of the camels also wins points.

The F.A.Q. for Ravensburger 81243 Castles Of Burgundy (Toys And Games)

'castles of burgundy' is one of my favorite tabletop games to play with my wife. It is an excellent two player game and is still fun with more than two players. There is good replayability and after 20-30 games, i must say, i am not tired of it. The different maps offer various strategies. In other games, i tend to be the evil one who not only plays to win, but plays to make others lose. In this game, i feel like it's balanced enough that there are plenty of good choices so my wife doesn't rage quit.

A number of questions have been asked here.

I bought this game for my husband for his birthday last november. We love to play strategy games (catan, carcassonne, 7 wonders, agricola, puerto rico, etc. ), and after reading reviews about castles of burgundy, decided to give it a try. Well, as with all strategy games, it took a while to read through all the rules and learn how to play the game, but once we got the hang of it, we really liked the game! the two of us played it several times together, and games took us about 50 minutes to an hour to play. We liked it so much that we thought it would be a fun game to play with family at christmas. Well, with 4 people, it took much longer! i mean, duh, of course it would take longer with double the people (two of which were learning it for the first time). If you're not a game enthusiast, this game could certainly be a little overwhelming, and that's how the 2 family members that played with us felt. Not only did it take 30 minutes to set up/explain the game, but then it took almost 2 1/2 hours to play the game! now, i don't mind long games, if they're meant to take that long. But when you have people who deliberate over every option and take 5 minutes per turn, it can seem agonizing. . Each player essentially has 25 turns in the game, so if you are playing with 4 people, that's 100 turns in the game. If each person only takes 1 minute per turn, that's an hour and 40 minutes. If each person takes 2 minutes per turn. You do the math! if you're into strategy games, then playing a long game is no problem! however, if you're not that crazy about the prospect of a 2 or 3 hour game, maybe this isn't for you. Of course, the more you play it, the faster you get. . Overall, we really like the game, and it is fairly fast with only 2 players. It's one that will certainly keep it's place in our game repertoire!

This is an excellent game for 2 or more players. The quality of all the pieces is quite good. I like the whimsical artwork and the different game boards which add a lot of variety to the game. It takes playing a few times to get used to what all the symbols mean on the all the tiles and pieces but the user guide excellently explains everything in clear, to the point language. . This game requires surprisingly little interaction between players. In fact, you could probably play this game without saying a word to your opponent! however that's a great feature because you can have an engaging conversation with the other players without being distracted with your game play. . One thing i like about this game is that you always have several choices each and every turn so you don't feel boxed in, trapped or limited in your ability to make a move. It's rewarding when you combine free moves to link multiple moves where you normally would only have two.

This game is fantastic! it immediately went into our list of favorite games and added to our main rotation. . This is one of the only games i know of that plays the same with 2 players as it does with 4. We really didn't notice any strategy tweaks or balance changes between either player count. They must have put a lot of research and effort into balancing this game because they truly got it spot on. The only area where i think it could have been improved is when you use the random side of the game boards (of which they supplied a ton of! ). Some of these random boards really handicap you by what's surrounding your castle. If you use them you'll you have to tailor your game strategy based on your board layout. I think that this may have been intentional given that many of them have a very distinctive pattern associated with them. . The quality of the game is solid. Ravensburger always has that characteristic cross-matte finish on their game and puzzle pieces that gives them such a satisfying feel. I do think they could have used markers that were more fun than just a plain colored cylinder. But for a sub$30 game i think that these are a fine compromise. . When you first start reading the rulebook you'll certainly have a slightly overwhelmed feeling since there's a large amount of stuff in there. However, i was honestly astonished at how easy it is to refresh yourself each time you play. They did a phenomenal job of placing game setup hints on the board such that you'll never need to reference the manual to do it. Likewise, the gameplay is excellently described by simple icons on your game board. The only thing we reference the manual for is to look up what some of the light green tiles do, since there are so many. The icons on these tiles do describe their action, but it wasn't quite intuitive enough for us to figure it out from the get go as we sometimes were slightly off in our assumptions. . Game length on this one is rather long. I don't think we've finished a game in under 45 minutes yet. However, we do spend a bit long thinking about our moves. This issue is somewhat lessened by the way they have all players roll at the same time. This way the later players can work on planning their moves while the earlier players are still moving. This worked well in our 4 player games and i think we only took an extra 15-20 minutes longer than our typical 45-60 minute 2 player games. . Overall, i rank this as one of my favorite games. We play it often and it always feels like a different game each time. The replayability without growing stale is very good. I'd have no hesitations toward buying this game again and would certainly recommend it to friends.

Super fun! . . The choices can "seem" overwhelming, but the role of the dice means that your actual choices are limited. A very tactical game meaning that you must decide how best to use the dice rolls that you get, rather than planning out the next 5 moves ahead of time. There are definite ways to adjust the dice rolls, and you never feel like there is nothing for you to do. Something is always available even if it is just gathering more workers (to adjust dice rolls). . I thought my girlfriend who likes theme and lighter games would hate this game. And the first round or two she did. But then it all started to click with her and she really got into it and loved it. (it also helped that i explained a "theme" of- you have been given this land by the king, and it is up to you to make it the best province in the land). . Lots of choices, a little luck (mitigated), and tons of fun makes this game a blast to play. And when you win it is because of the skill that you played with.

C. Angelica, New Jersey says

It's a great 2 player game. My wife and i enjoy playing castles of burgundy 1v1. . However, when we tried to play with 4 people, the game was simply too tedious. In fact, playing with 4 people made the game less interesting as well. With more people, the board starts with more tiles in the middle, and that means it's harder to block other people's strategy by yourself. . The best part of playing 1v1 meant that there are some areas that you cannot complete if the other person does. For example, if you take 3 "mine" tiles, the other person cannot complete the "mine" area unless becomes available in the black tiles. This adds a strategy to block the other player's strategy if you can identify it, but by having more people, and thus more tiles in the middle, this strategy is almost impossible. So, it quickly turns into a game of building the best castle you can, instead of having that additional layer of sabotage.

Biggest mistake of this month: buying this game 2 weeks before the midterm! i am so addicted to this game that before i go to bed and after i wake up, i'm constantly asking/bugging my bf to play this game with me! he seems to like it that i'm asking him to play board games with him all the time but he gets annoyed because i ask him 3 times/day! this game is so addicting. At first, i didn't open this game for about a week b/c i am the type of person who takes long time to figure out how the game works and at the same time i don't like watching youtube review videos to learn. So i always try to figure out the game play through the instruction book and sometimes these instruction books suck so bad that they force me to have to google some game play videos but! i was so surprised that despite many people saying the learning how to play cob will take some time, the instruction book was very short! only 5 pages i think. So it was pretty easy to follow the book and set up and play. It took less than 15min for my bf and i to get used to the game once we started (it took 30 min to understand the game play solely relying on the book). Since there are lots of reviews on here that explain basic game play i'll just keep going on about how fun this game is! i usually get sick of board games pretty fast so my bf doesn't like to buy new ones very often (i played pandemic only like twice, risk twice(i like risk btw), whitechapel few times(i still like this game so i want to play a lot but it's so long), hanabi, coup, betrayal at house on the hill only once. But cob is the game i've played the most out of all the games i own. The content itself i'm not sure it built for re-playability but i sure get lots of play out of it b/c of so many diff strategies! you can either buy farm animals, build building(there are diff kinds), sell goods, or hire workers to win so many diff strategies love this game. I just played this morning and i think i'm gonna have to play another one tonight!

This is a game that is very complicated. We love them because they are so different from other board games and play them all of the time, but this one was just too complicated.

Super fun! .

Castles of burgundy is the euro-game picture in the dictionary. The theme and art won't be the reason you'll love it, but if you like any kind of strategy, once you play you'll be hooked. You will get a lot of points; everything you do will give you points or get you on the way to getting points. You'll be rolling dice to allow you to perform actions; placing tiles, shipping goods, and jockeying with all the other players for the best options on the shared board. Castles of burgundy is a great example of how fantastic game mechanics can trump art style, no matter how boring the art is. . Positives. . In castles of burgundy, even if your dice roll is not what you were hoping for, you will always have something to build, gain, or otherwise improve your score. There are options all over the board, and many of the options will allow you to "chain" moves together. It's a lot of fun to figure out a play that creates three or four further moves, or to land that perfect tile, ready to rack up the points in the next round. . At first glance of the board, burgundy seems to have an overwhelming amount of choices available each turn, but the dice roll restricts the amount of plays that can be made and streamlines each turn. After games of catan, agricola, or dominion, where you always need resources to purchase what you need, it's refreshing to have the only requirement be to roll a certain number. You won't get the feeling that you're "never going to roll that five i need" like it often happens in catan, since you can adjust the roll as you need to, and you're only rolling for a 1 through 6. . There are a lot of interesting strategies to use; some players will take a route that gets a lot of up front points, whereas another might build a strategy that is rewarding more at the end of the game. Often in our games someone will be up by thirty or forty points, until a late push by someone else would close the gap right at the end. This is not a game where you will struggle for points; just about everything you do will create something. The trick is finding the moves that don't just get you some points, but get you a lot of points. . Negatives. . The game boards are small, and the tiles smaller and sometimes hard to read. The artwork is drab, though serviceable, and doesn't really tie to what some of the tiles do. The looks alone are probably a reason that those on the fence won't give it a chance. Once you get all the pieces out, the tiles don't easily shuffle without flipping over to the wrong side, and it takes some time to get all the pieces set on the board. . Some of the "knowledge" tiles makes sense based on the icon graphics, but many do not. You'll play your first several games with the instruction book handy to look up what each of the tiles do. With four players, it can drag on a bit, especially with new players. We played a four player game with two new players and it took over 2 1/2 hours. . Final thoughts. . There are a lot of different ways to score points in castles of burgundy. However, sometimes it feels like the scores are tethered together and that everyone will land at about the same final score if they are the same skill level. Everyone will be picking up just about the same bonuses, albeit at different points of the game. In these games, sometimes a random knowledge tile picked up in the middle of the game can sometimes swing the balance. Many times, all players will have wildly different scores throughout the game, when right near the end they'll somehow end up with similar scores. An experienced player will nearly always beat a newbie, but it's generally always close when two players of similar skill level square off. . Once you get a few rounds in you'll start to appreciate the gameplay design. Everything does give you points, but there is definitely a strategy in figuring out the most efficient way to get points, or what type of points to go for at which stage of the game, keeping everyone else's gameboard in mind to deny them the tiles they are looking for. This elegant design is what makes castles of burgundy currently one of our favorite mid-weight games. .
