Rio Grande Games Dominion Empires Game

Just as dominion was growing stale, donald x and his merry band of play-testers came up with some concepts that have infused the game with new life and myriad possibilities. This revival started with adventures, where we were introduced to events and reserve cards, and now with empires we get landmarks and debt tokens. The game has evolved from the primitive stages to the world of capitalistic conquest. . Empires comes with a small number of attacks, but they are amusing and sometimes brutal. Legionary has destroyed a game or two of mine, forcing me to discard down to 2 cards before drawing one, while enchantress has disrupted a few games with her card-shifting ways. Catapult is a handy way of trashing, while punishing your opponents at the same time. This expansion has other good trashers with sacrifice and temple, and some fun game mechanics involving split piles-a 10-card pile that has 5 of one card on top, and 5 of another on the bottom. The bottom cards usually provide a strategy to go with the top cards, and can become a goal unto themselves. . The real fun for me, though, is the debt token concept. These are cards that can be gained for a certain amount of debt tokens, which must be paid off before you can buy anymore cards. There is the immediate drawback of the debt, but as in the real world, the wise usage of this can lead to big gains. Overlord costs 8 debt, but can function as any action on the board costing 5 or less. City quarter also costs 8 debt, but can be a game-changer. As for capital, you buy this treasure for 5 coins, and when you play it, you get 6 coins of purchasing power and an extra buy. The only catch is that you gain 6 debt tokens when you do so. Sure, you might take a hit for a turn or even two, but as with tactician (from dominion: seasides), the payoff can be huge. The real mind-blower is fortune, which costs 8 coins and 8 debt tokens. It doubles your buying power once in a turn, and can shift a game quickly from buying cards that cost 4 and 5 to buying golds, platinums, and multiple victory cards. . Another fun card is castles. The pile of 12 castles is set out with the cheapest castle on the top, the humble castle. By upgrading and gaining more castles, you can reach the king's castle. Fighting over the castle pile could be a strategy unto itself, where a player can run out 3 piles before the other player gets too deep into the provinces or colonies. . I haven't even touched on all the ideas in the landmarks and events. The possibilities seem endless, especially when mixing empires and adventures with other dominion sets. The way i see it, dominion just keeps getting better. Instead of rushing out ideas just to make a buck, donald x seems to really think through these concepts and make the game something that continues to grow, evolve, and add new surprises. When many were frustrated with the cheaper quality of some of the game pieces and cards in adventures, he listened and made sure that the next expansion had quality cards and even better victory tokens than before. In caring about the game and its fans, he has truly built an empire.

The world is big and your kingdom gigantic. It's no longer a kingdom really; it's an empire. Which makes you the emperor. This entitles you to a better chair, plus you can name a salad after yourself. It's not easy being emperor. The day starts early, when you light the sacred flame; then it's hours of committee meetings, trying to establish exactly why the sacred flame keeps going out. Sometimes your armies take over a continent and you just have no idea where to put it. And there's the risk of assassination; you have a food taster, who tastes anything before you eat it, and a dagger tester, who gets stabbed by anything before it stabs you. You've taken to staying at home whenever it's the ides of anything. Still overall it's a great job. You wouldn't trade it for the world - especially given how much of the world you already have.

Dominion Empires Game (Rio Grande Games) FAQ.

Wow. Just when i thought nothing could top my fav adventures expansion. Along came empires! i have purchased one for myself, my sister's family as well as my brother's family! the addition of landmarks is such a fantastic way to play a game you're familiar with and yet completely change it up with new ways to earn victory points! we also started using their idea of putting 5 higher priced/more valuable cards beneath 5 cheaper cards in some of our kingdom piles. So fun! not sure why we hadn't thought of this ourselves but would simply have 11 or 12 kingdom piles for our home games because we couldn't decide which of our favs to kick out of the supply. Thanks for the idea, empires! obviously we have also enjoyed playing with this expansion's predetermined split piles as well. . This expansion is awesome. So much so that i'm flying out to my sister's house for a quick weekend getaway in a couple of weeks simply to have a dom marathon with my 9 year old nephew, my sister and her husband! the introduction of debt tokens and the requirement to pay off one's debt before being able to make any further purchases is a lesson she's excited to teach her son! dominion can definitely be played with younger children as long as at least one adult knows what they're doing. It teaches reading, math, strategy, patience, etc and i have even introduced it to a six year old who now loves it and his dad said he's never seen his son sit and be engaged for so long in his life! initially he made fun of us and our "nerdy" game but now he enjoys playing as well after seeing his boys do so well. Pretty darn cool! -Notice from L. Emily, Schleswig-Holstein

Wonderful! i would play it every day if i had time. Great expansion set, and i have them all. This one is a little complex if you are not already familiar with dominion and maybe a couple of other expansions. I love the landmarks and new events which are played like the events in the adventures expansion. Introduces the concept of debt. It is really fun to play with the prosperity expansion. With debt you can buy a card such as overlord with no money, but you have to take 8 debt tokens, and you cannot buy another card until you pay off that debt. Lots of money flows in this expansion.

Dominion-empires-game-(rio-grande-games) set picture

- E. CrawfordCaveat, i love dominion. This is more dominion, so i love it. The new mechanics are fun, and give some good variability to the game. Debt is an interesting mechanic, but it ultimately is just a new and limited form of currency that only applies to 6 of the 29 kingdom cards and 1 each of the events and landmark cards. Otherwise it is unused throughout the entirety of dominion except for those 8 cards (so far). . It was supposedly conceived as a sequel to prosperity, but i have to say i would not have clued in on that without doing some reading. There are more victory cards sure, but the highest costing kingdom card is 5 coins if you don't consider the few cards that cost 8 debt. If you are the sequel to prosperity, that introduced 5 coin platinum treasure and 8 coin cost cards, well you see my confusion as to calling this a sequel. It brings back the split upgrade feature of adventures, but only on one item, the castles, which pretty much only provide victory points. It offers 2 duration cards, seaside is still my favorite expansion so yay there. . Adventures was a far more extensive expansion, i understand it is bigger by design but this feels underwhelming after that one. This actually feels like an expansion to the adventures expansion, as we get more events and the locations mechanic feels like an extension of the event mechanic. If you love dominion, have at, but this is probably down around hinterlands territory for me in the order of acquisition, ie one of the last expansions someone building a dominion set should worry about buying.

A fantastic expansion to an already great game. Adds a new debt mechanic, which adds a lot of debt when debt cards are in the game! the new events and landmark cards shake the game up even more, with the landmarks providing what basically amounts to new scoring rules throughout or at the end of the game. . Definitely not an expansion i'd pick up as your first or second expansion, but if you at least have stuff like seaside or prosperity or intrigue then it's definitely worth a buy.

Rio Grande Games Dominion Hinterlands

At the time of me writing this dominion: hinterlands is the most recent expansion. Almost all of the cards have a good effect and will therefore be useful. What i mean is that in cornucopia there were a good deal of cards (horn of plenty, harvest) that are still in almost mint condition because nobody buys them when i put them on the table. The art i would say is not as good as cornucopias but it is better than say intrigue or base. . Out of all the expansions i would rate it 3rd. With seaside being the best and prosperity after that. It gets its 3rd place ribbon because they did a really good job putting in effects that make for a more challenging game. These are cards that benefit mathematical analysis and a deep understanding of the game mechanics. Since a lot of the effects of hinterlands cards operate around a vanilla effect when played and a special one time effect when gained it takes a good deal of thinking and card counting to make some of the strategies pay off. . Bottom line is that i would recommend this expansion to people that really like dominion and are experienced players that own most of the other sets. If you are new to dominion and want a good first expansion to build up from base i would recommend dominion: intrigue, dominion: seaside, dominion: prosperity.

The world is big and your kingdom small. Small when compared to the world, that is, it's moderate-sized when compared to other kingdoms. But in a big world like this one - big when compared to smaller worlds anyway, if such things exist, it's moderate-sized when compared to worlds of roughly the same size, and a little small when compared to worlds just a little larger - well, to make a long story short - short when compared to longer stories anyway - it is time to stretch your borders. You've heard of far-off places - exotic countries, where they have pancakes but not waffles, where the people wear the wrong number of shirts, and don't even have a word for the look two people give each other when they each hope that the other will do something that they both want done but which neither of them wants to do. It is to these lands that you now turn your gaze.

Dominion Hinterlands (Rio Grande Games) FAQ.

I must say i am hooked on dominion. We have three expansions now, and i love all of them. Hinterlands is our most recent addition. It definitely adds a new dimension to the game. It blends well with prosperity and dark ages. I highly recommend adding this expansion to your dominion collection! -Notice from I. Taylor, Northamptonshire

After having played a lot of the different expansion packs, this one is really exciting with a lot of high powered cards that make the games a little more intense and the strategies more complicated. In my experience, with the original dominion set, the games would last around 45 minutes. With these cards, the games last about 15-30 minutes longer, which gives you more time to develop and establish your deck. This is a really fun expansion.

Dominion-hinterlands-(rio-grande-games) set picture

- Q. AngelicaAlthough the stated central theme of hinterlands is "cards that do something immediately when you buy them or gain them, " that is not what i first think of when i think of this expansion. (in fact, i had to go look at the box again to remind myself of the stated central theme. ). . Rather, when i think of the hinterlands expansion, i think of new complexity. I also have the seaside expansion, and whereas seaside in a general sense took some standard fare (+x cards, +y actions, +z coins, etc. ) and turned them on their head (you get those next turn), hinterlands seems to me to go into new territory altogether (very appropriate for the title! ). There are cards such as border village (where when you gain that card you also gain a card costing less than it), trader (where when you have to gain a certain card, such as a curse, you can gain a silver instead), and scheme (where you can take an action card you have played and put it back on top of your deck). Now, of course, there will be exceptions to what i said (some cards still have +x cards, etc. ) but the general feel i get when i play with hinterlands is a deeper game with new and very different opportunities. I am very happy with this expansion and highly recommend it.

Dominion super fan! i love this version and my 13 year old who doesn't like some of the other expansions begs to play hinterlands.

Rio Grande Games Dominion Base Cards

I was uncertain whether this would be worth the money: sure, it's cheap, but it doesn't really let you do anything you couldn't before. In practice, i find it's surprisingly convenient. When we want to play with an expansion, now we just grab that expansion and the base cards, instead of lugging around the bulky base set box. The small size of the base cards box makes a huge difference. . The new art is also a big draw. It's definitely an upgrade over the original; the potion is particularly beautiful. One drawback, though, is that it makes it harder to see (at a glance) the difference between card cost and value, both for victory and treasure. Take the province: the original cards have a huge "6" on the front, but with the new cards, i've caught myself more than once counting them for 8 at game's end. We also had a new player try to buy a gold for 3! these problems are minor (especially for experienced players), but they do pop up from time to time. . Overall, the base card expansion is a surprisingly satisfying buy for dominion lovers who have multiple expansions (we have all of them). That's the target demographic - if you're satisfied with just the base set and/or intrigue, don't bother picking this up just for the new art.

Rio Grande Games Dominion Base CardsRio-Grande-Games-Dominion-Cards

Dominion Base Cards (Rio Grande Games) FAQ.

First off i'll say there's only 3 reasons to buy this set. 1. You don't have dominion, or intrigue but want to play an expansion. 2. You want to play dominion w/ 5+ players (and you don't mind base cards having different art). 3. Something happened to your base cards (spills/tears/ect). . First thing you'll notice about this set is that you can easily tell currency apart from each other which is almost worth buying this set alone. Overall the art on these cards are much better than in the dominion set. The downside to this is that it'll trigger everybody's ocd if you're using this as an expansion for 5+ players. If you're looking to buy this as a 5+ expansion set, and have friends that are nit picky about about stuff like that just buy 2 sets. . I really like that the box is fairly smalls also so you can easily carry it, and an expansion without having to carry around the whole base game also. Or have a generic box full of dominion cards from various games. . The reason this didn't get 5 stars is because i think this set would of been better adding more base cards instead of expansion base cards like potion, province, and platinum which come in their own expansions. For example if you never play the alchemy expansion then the potion cards are completely useless. At least w/ province, and platinum you can play them w/out prosperity it's just not suggested. . Overall if you fit into one of the above categories these cards are worth it. -Notice from D. Benton, Doncaster

Sick of playing dominion umpteen million times because you want a change but don't know what. This is it. Refreshes the game completely. Switch back & forth every 10-20 games or so to see a new look. Nice addition to the game. Only base cards- but like a new outfit ; )

Dominion-base-cards-(rio-grande-games) set picture

- W. OpheliaWe originally played dominion using the basic cards that come with the dominion big box. The victory cards were somewhat dull but serviceable. The treasure cards, however, were a bit of a pain to use. All four treasures (copper, silver, gold, and platinum) had the same coin in the center of the card with a different number (1, 2, or 3) in the center. This made it difficult to differentiate between the three at a glance. . The dominion base cards set replaces all of the victory cards (estate, duchy, province, and colony), treasure cards (copper, silver, gold, and platinum), and curse cards along a trash card and a blank card. Although the improved graphics on the victory and curse cards are nice, it's the differentiated treasure cards that really sell this set. If you're a fan of dominion, i highly recommend picking this up to improve your gameplay experience. You'll be able to tell instantly that a gold is gold, a copper is a copper, etc. This not only speeds up the game, but it also makes sorting your deck much easier at the end of the game.

First of all, before i say anything about what i thought about the product, let me detail what the dominion base cards set are. . Victory cards. . Estate : 24. Duchy : 12. Province: 12. Colony : 12. Curse : 30. . Treasure cards. . Copper : 60. Silver : 40. Gold : 30. Platinum: 12. Potion : 16. . Trash : 1. Empty : 1. . All together this adds up to 250 cards, which is packed in three piles laid out horizontal in the box face up. In these piles are the base set of cards dominion is required for play, but this time they have brand new artwork. That's right, now it is clearly visible what is a copper and what is a gold from all the way across the table with just a quick bat of the eye. The main selling point for the dominion base cards set (dbcs as we'll call it here on out) is the recognition feature, which is easily achieved with the treasures, the mild exception being potion. The reason for this is that potion's artwork doesn't really "pop out" and it's kind of hard to see just what the picture is. However, when you're playing with potions, this messy blend of color will stand out from the other treasures and your eyes will pick up on it quickly. . The victory cards do not stand out as well, but i have just only recently started to get acquainted with them. So far i seem to mix estate with duchy rather easily when sorting through my piles, but my eyes are slowly and surely trying to find key features that distinguish them. Curse doesn't have this problem, it's the most outspoken card with absolutely fitting portrait of a crow over a dark night sky. . When all's said and done, this set may not be for new players. I know, the cards shine much brighter than their originals, but i believe that it's important to play with the originals before diving into these new ones. This is because the dbcs does not provide an easy way to see the value of your card like the originals do in big bold text in the middle. Sure, you couldn't always tell what its name was, but you knew the value and that was worth all your attention. So really, the dbcs is a graduation for those familiar with the card names and values for a good while so they can now associate a new bright picture with a familiar term they know the meaning of. . Finally, there is the issue of packaging, really, only three slots to put these cards is a gripe, but i'm sure it saved rio grande games packaging costs. Actually, when it comes down to it, the packaging doesn't really matter when it comes to game preparation, because i usually just take all of the cards and set them out. Save for platinum or potion, which i'll set to the side half of the time. It's still a continuity issue for me, seeing as everything else dominion based has a neat packaging and labeling system, which has been completely forgone for a sloppy yet portable container. . So should you buy this? yes, not just for (mostly, but still improved) easy to see cards, but to open up new opportunities for multiple dominion games at the same time. I bought 2 of them, and actually considering buying one to accompany each expansion so if my seaside or hinterlands gets borrowed, they'll also have base cards to use. . Do your eyes a favor and buy this, then train the noobies in a couple of games with the original cards and have them graduate to these. You won't regret it.

Rio Grande Games Dominion Seaside

Dominion: seaside is an expansion to both dominion and dominion: intrigue. As such, it does not contain material for a complete game. Specifically, it does not include the basic treasure, victory, curse, or trash cards. Thus, you will need either the base game or intrigue to play with this expansion, and you will need to have experience playing dominion with either of the first two games. It is designed to work with either or both of these sets, and any future expansions that may be published. All you ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by. And someone who knows how to steer ships using stars. You finally got some of those rivers you'd wanted, and they led to the sea. These are dangerous, pirate-infested waters, and you cautiously send rat-infested ships across them, to establish lucrative trade at far-off merchant-infested ports. First, you will take over some islands, as a foothold. The natives seem friendly enough, crying their peace cries, and giving you spears and poison darts before you are even close enough to accept them properly. When you finally reach those ports you will conquer them, and from there you will look for more rivers. One day, all the rivers will be yours. This is the 2nd addition to dominion. It adds 26 new kingdom cards to dominion. Its central theme is your next turn; there are cards that do something this turn and next, cards that set up your next turn, and other ways to step outside of the bounds of a normal turn. Dominion Cornucopia Guilds Card Game

Great addition if you're into dominion as you get 2 small expansions in 1 box. The set is german made and not like the poorly made usa sets of the newer versions of the base, intrigue, and adventures sets (beware of the made on usa stamp on the front of the box. So sad). Printing was great, no miscut cards, coloring on the card backs matched the other 6 sets i have, and all components and cards were present. I was lucky to find this set for $23 on online store. Well worth it as opposed to the $44 it's retailed for in a game store.

Dominion: guilds and cornucopia combines the dominion: guilds and dominion: cornucopia small box expansions - originally the fifth and the eighth expansions - into a single large box expansion. The cards from dominion: cornucopia - 13 new kingdom cards, plus 5 unique cards- are focused on variety, with cards that reward you for having a variety of cards in your deck, in your hand, and in play, in addition to cards that help you get that variety. Dominion: guilds also consists of 13 new kingdom cards, with some of these cards allowing you to get more out of them by paying extra when you buy them. In addition, this expansion contains coin tokens that you can save to spend later.

- M. SusanaThis game has some good cards, and like all the other dominion games, is fun and never has the same game twice in a row. It comes with 2 separate games, both with 13 cards in each. They are easy to inter mingle with other cards from other dominion games. A great game!

Love how satisfying it is to put away, just like the dominion big box, everything has a space and it's clearly labeled. . This expansion for dominion adds a level of play with the coin tokens that you get to keep until you want to spend them. I'm still working my way through all of it, but so far i've had a lot of fun.

Rio Grande Games Dominion Adventures Game

So while i do love 98% of the things about this expansion my only complaint would be the tokens. Yup they are cheap cardboard. My only thought on why the tokens are so cheap is (and it pains me to say it) because the expansion was made in the us. Dang i cant believe i said it. Really other than that the game is great! i really haven't used the tokens yet so i dont know how much that will actually bother me in the long run. Another this is some of the artists chosen to illustrate the cards didn't do a good job, that is a little disappointing. I really enjoy the ability to upgrade cards it can really change the game when you dont realize someone has the upgraded version of a card you have. The tavern mat cards are also great giving you the ability to trash a card (helpful when curses are in play) to bring a card that could give you an extra action and buy in to your hand. If you own a base game (dominion or dominion intrigue) and like it. Buy this one. It really might be my favorite dominion expansion yet.

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. You're not sure which, but at least you've narrowed it down. You are rich with life experiences, but have had trouble trading them for goods and services. It's time to seek your fortune, or anyone's really whoever's is closest. To the west there's a land of milk and honey, full of giant bees and monstrous cows; to the east, a land of eggs and licorice; to the north, treacherous swamps; to the south, loyal jungles. But all of them have been thoroughly pillaged. You've heard legends, though, of a fifth direction as yet unspoiled, with its treasures conveniently gathered into troves. You have your sword and your trail mix, handed down from your father, and his father before him. You've recruited some recruits and hired some hirelings; you've shined your armor and distressed a damsel. You put up a sign saying "gone adventuring". Then you put up another sign, saying "beware of dog", in case people get any ideas. You're ready. You saddle up your trusty steed, and head forth. Dominion: adventures, the ninth addition to the game of dominion, contains 400 cards, 60 tokens and six mats. This expansion has 30 new kingdom cards, including the return of duration cards that do things on future turns, plus reserve cards that can be saved for the right moment. There are also 20 event cards that give you something to buy besides cards, including tokens that modify cards. "

Dominion Adventures Game (Rio Grande Games) FAQ.

While i'm a bit miffed that they came out with a new expansion (i had a nice wooden box that fit all of the previous cards perfectly), i can't be too mad because. Well, new dominion! . . This expansion really kicks up game play a notch. Really cool new elements that take a bit of getting used to, but add some new strategies to a game that already had a million strategies. . If you are new to dominion, i would suggest not getting this as your first or second expansion. Instead, look to get prosperity and seaside, as those will help. Then maybe pick this up as a third (or buy them all, they all have amazing features). But your should be familiar with those two if you really want to understand this expansion well. . Overall, one of my favorite expansions to date. -Notice from I. Anonymous, Oldham

I am a huge dominion fan! it is my favorite game of all time, and i have played thousands of games online. For the purpose of my review i want to focus on three things: the quality of the cards and game components, how casual players may enjoy this expansion, and how people who have played with most or all the expansions may feel about this expansion. . As far as the quality goes, for this printing it is a slight step down from previous dominion printings. Rio grand games changed having the game printed in germany to being published by hasbro. The downgrade in quality is not intentional and printings of all games have been halted while the issue is being investigated. So at some point a better quality version will come out but that is a ways away since a lot of copies were printed, apparently enough to last at least a year. . The box is now a matte finish and lacks the glossy feel of previous dominion expansions. The same applies to the tokens and mats which also have a matte finish which drowns out some of the colors and does not feel as pleasant to the touch as the mats in other expansions. In addition the tokens are slightly off center and the cards are slightly bendier. Again these issues will be fixed at some point but you should be made aware of them. I am a little bothered by this but the cards in this expansion are so amazing it more than makes up for this downgrade in quality. If you really want this expansion i say buy it now. If you don't play dominion that often it might be worth waiting a year or two for the new printing to come out. . Now onto the review. First i want to focus on the casual player. I teach dominion to a lot of people. Overall i think this an excellent expansion for someone fairly new to the game. Adventures does add a lot of complexity but is also a lot of fun. My recommendation is to introduce seaside, then prosperity, and after that adventures. The other expansions are good but these three offer the most bang for the buck. I would save dark ages and alchemy for last as those tend to be expansions that casual players don't enjoy as much or not at all in some cases. Ironically , dark ages is a favorite among very experienced dominion players. . For the casual player, adventures brings back duration cards which were first introduced in seaside. For many people this is the most popular mechanic ever in dominion. Also durations have evolved. We get duration-attacks and durations that stay out for the entire game once you get them into play! how awesome is that. . Durations alone might be enough to get some people to buy this expansion, but there is more! perhaps the most popular mechanic in this expansion will be the traveller cards. These are cards that cost 2 coins to buy and get better add the game goes on. You keep exchanging them for something better until you end up with one super powerful card. For instance, the champion card is a duration that protects you from attacks for the rest of the game and allows you to play all your action cards for the rest of the game. You can play your entire deck without using a single village. Holy cow! . . And, the fun does not stop there. Adventures introduces a new card type called events which are not kingdom cards but effects that you can buy throughout the game. Events may just be my favorite mechanic in the game. They really add a lot of depth to the game and are a ton of fun. . Finally we have reserve cards. Newer players might not enjoy these as much since they are easy to forget about and require a bit more thinking to use. Essentially, reserve cards are cards that you set aside when you play and then call them into play when certain conditions are met. For instance guide allows you to call it at the beginning of any turn to discard your hand and draw 5 new cards. So if someone plays militia against you or you don'tlike your hand , you just call guide and get a new hand. . I almost forgot to mention adventures offers a lot of cards. You get 30 new kingdom cards and 20 events. That's a lot of cards. Ther are also tokens which do things that usually modify a pike of cards. For instance one token makes any action card cost two coins less while another token turns your estates into any action that costs four coins or less! i have a feeling that will be a favorite with a lot of people. And your estates are still worth a victory point. . Now let's discuss how a more experienced player may respond to this. Here is my response: if you love dominion buy this expansion. Seriously, this is a must-have. Compared to all other expansions, this is probably the best expansion ever. You get so much bang for your buck. There is a lot of strategic depth added with this expansion. Events are awesome. Durations are back. Reserves add a ton of strategy and, well, you are essentially getting 50 new cards here-30 kingdom cards and 20 events. Honestly for an experienced player this is the best expansion ever. . If anyone has any questions please leave a comment and i will do my best to answer your question. For the record i did not go into to much depth since i am on a plane writing this on a tablet, but i will say i do love this expansion.

- E. ElizabethMy wife and i have enjoyed playing this game now for a few years. This is an expansion deck to the other sets and you will need a set that has all the components (gold, silver, copper etc) to run a full game. We enjoyed this add on better than others in the past. It allows us to add new life to a game that while still fun enables more opportunities. If you have never played this game before and are looking for a new way for your family to interact this is perfect. The set up is quick, learning the game play takes no time and you get to decide the cards you will use in the game allowing you custom a game to a certain style. In fact i think the longest part of playing the game is deciding which cards to use because once you start the game flows smoothly and quick with easy directions on each card. I would definitely recommend this to any family looking for a fun game night that also stimulates the creativity that other games lack.

My wife was sick of playing dominion. She agrees with the criticism that it is "dry as toast. " she feels that this set is less predictable and therefore, worth playing again. I am happy as dominion is one of my favorite games ever. . Adventures has a great new theme, lots of mechanics with the events and the new tokens. The overall effect is that this set gives the whole game a different feel. . The main improvement in this set is that older cards that were previously less effective are improved. In this sense some cards have been "redeemed" and there are more viable strategies than with previous sets. Also there are completely new strategies that are waiting to be discovered. . The main disappointment for me was not in terms of game play but more in manufacturing. I would echo other reviews that mention the thin card stock and the paperboard tokens where prosperity, guilds, and seaside have metal. . Also i like to sleeve my cards and the included storage tray for the cards doesn't really accommodate sleeved cards so i will probably either modify my tray for easier storage or look for a different storage solution.

Rio Grande Games Dominion: Alchemy

There are strange things going on in your basement laboratories. They keep calling up for more barrels of quicksilver, or bits of your hair. Well it's all in the name of progress. They're looking for a way to turn lead into gold, or at least into something better than lead. That lead had just been too good of a bargain to pass up, you didn't think, where will i put all this lead, what am i going to do with this lead anyway. Well that will all be sorted out. They're also looking for a universal solvent. If they manage that one, you will take whatever they use to hold it in and build a castle out of it. A castle that can't be dissolved. Now that's progress. This is the 3rd addition to dominion. It adds new kingdom cards to dominion and as it is an expansion, you will need dominion, or dominion: intrigue to play the game. Dominion: alchemy is an expansion, and can't be played by itself, to play with it, you need dominion, or a standalone expansion to dominion (dominion: intrigue). Those provide the basic cards you need to play (treasure, victory, and curse cards), as well as the full rules for setup and gameplay. Dominion: alchemy can also be combined with any other dominion expansions you have.

Dominion: Intrigue 2nd Edition Board Game

Do you like dominion? great! if you only get one expansion, this one adds a lot of delightful and bastardy new game-play options - get it.

Something's afoot. The steward smiles at you like he has a secret, or like he thinks you have a secret, or like you think he thinks you have a secret. There are secret plots brewing, you're sure of it. At the very least, there are yours. A passing servant murmurs, "the eggs are on the plate. " you frantically search your codebook for the translation before realizing he means that breakfast is ready. Excellent. Everything is going according to plan. Dominion: intrigue 2nd edition is the 1st expansion to the game of dominion. It introduces 26 new kingdom cards. There are victory cards that do something before the end of the game, cards that interact with victory cards, and underlings that give you a choice as to what they do. Dominion: intrigue 2nd edition replaced six cards and added one compared to the first edition. It no longer has basic cards and thus cannot be played as a stand-alone expansion; to play with it, you need the basic cards and rulebook (dominion provides both). To expand to 5-6 players, use base cards. Dominion: intrigue 2nd edition can be combined with any other dominion expansions you have.

Dominion: Intrigue 2nd Edition Board Game (Rio Grande Games) FAQ.

Awesome expansion, so much fun to play and changes up the classic dominion if you've been playing for a while. -Notice from E. Josephine, Wirral

My family and i are big dominion fans, and over the years we've created our own substitutes for some of the weaker cards. Here, at last, donald x. And his merry crew have given us a bigger, better, bolder set of intrigue cards. The seven new action cards are a lot of fun to play. They are the flexible courtier (cost $5), the strong but tricky diplomat (cost $4), the strategic lurker (cost $2), the handy mill (cost $4), the much-better-than-smithy patrol (cost $5), the much-better-than-remodel replace (cost $5), and the sneaky secret passage (cost $4). I'm sure we'll discover more interactions between them and other expansions as we go along. . One thing to beware of: the product description of this 2nd edition intrigue clearly states, "this game adds 25 new kingdom cards and a complete set of treasure and victory cards, " but i didn't receive any new treasure or victory cards, and the previous reviewer seems to have experienced the same. The original intrigue had all the treasure and victory cards, and this set stated it did as well, so imagine my frustration when i paid full price for this. The bullet points do explain that it's not a complete game, but that contradicts the description and the elements of the first edition intrigue-and you'd think the 2nd would have everything and plus some. . Regardless, i love the new cards, and we will enjoy incorporating them into our games and strategies for months to come. Intrigue was in the middle of the pack for me, with expansions such as seaside, dark ages, and empires being my faves, but these new cards add enough fun to push intrigue back into my top tier of dominion expansions.

My son loves new games that challenge. I like games that i can play without feeling like i'm too challenged to play with him.

A great update to the base set of my favorite game. I own all the expansions, and we had stopped playing the first base game because it was relatively boring and had some dud cards. These new cards really perk the game up yet. It may not be as exciting as the adventures expansion, but then it is not supposed to be. This is the base set that you introduce new players to, and it now is a very worthwhile game. Footnote is that i bought the full 2nd edition myself so that i could get the new set of victory/treasure/curse cards and the minor rewording on a few other cards. But this update pack is a cost efficient way to upgrade existing sets. I bought this set for family, but it turned out they already had it, so i gave it to some friends.

We love the dominion collection of games. This adds more cards for game play. We enjoyed all the cards in this expansion.

F. Ophelia, Haute-Normandie says

This is definitely prolonging our enjoyment of the original game. In particular the bandit card is a lot more fun and effective to play with than the thief card it replaced.

U. Kimberly, Thurrock

The box is small but filled with goodness. The new cards are well designed, and i really like the fact that the publisher made an upgrade pack available for the 2nd edition (rather than expecting me to buy the entire game again). . This set adds just the cards that the 2nd edition has but the 1st edition did not have. The box also comes with a card organizer for the new cards. However, the insert only labels the cards that ar in the 2nd edition, but omits the cards from 1st edition that 2nd edition no longer has - that's a bit annoying, since i obvious own the entire 1st edition (or i wouldn't be buying the upgrade pack) and thus want to have all my cards labeled, new and old. They are totally compatible so why did they assume i would stop using the old ones or not want them organized?

T. Campbell, Colorado says

I really like the new cards for my favorite game.

X. Crawford, Champagne-Ardenne

It's always fun to add more cards and it's an inexpensive way to add new to expand the original games.

Z. Benton, Rheinland-Pfalz

Great new cards for dominion. First edition dominion was a very good game but suffered from the fact that too many of the cards were weak and would only rarely be used in a game between skilled players. That made the game less interesting (though this was quickly fixed if you bought expansions). In the second edition, six of the weakest/most boring cards were removed and replaced with seven stronger/more interesting cards. . This update pack gives you the seven stronger/more interesting cards that were added in the second edition to go with your first edition dominion game. You can just get rid of the six replaced cards (since i had a number of expansions, i already wasn't using the replaced cards anyway). This improvement is particularly valuable for people who only own a small number of sets, because you see each card more often. . The card quality is excellent. It also comes with randomizer cards and a new insert for the first edition dominion box showing you which card goes where.
