Review for valence card game advanced chemistry

Price was $25.00. This game is very well done and can explain molecules to children in an easy, engaging and fun way! we played as a family from age 9 and up and everyone enjoyed the learning atmosphere, children and adults alike. Visualizing the molecules and how the elements interact by simple math (one negative or positive number per card/per element), for example two cards may say -1 +1 or -2 +2 or even -1, -1 +2 for three card play, all equal to zero or balanced to make a molecule is the perfect way to teach the concept. In addition, learning how to pronounce the names of the molecules when they come together (some chemistry background useful for us) and teaching the names of the completed molecules to younger players is a helpful reinforcement. We watched the video "how to play valence" on the internet and seeing this was a good way to show the basic rules. In game playing, we noticed there is an element (no pun intended) of surprise (shhh, helium is quite disruptive:)), or where suddenly one person gets the 10 points needed to win the game after many rounds of play! playing the game often will certainly add to a child's memory of the element names and the molecules they make and is an excellent way to mentally prepare for science. We love teaching science to our children in an encouraging way and this chemistry game has been and will continue to be a rewarding addition to our science program. Thank you.

My oldest ( 9 1/2) has been expressing an interest in chemistry, and this was a perfect gift, especially as an accompaniment to the book elements. I've learned to just go ahead and watch the accompanying video when learning a new game versus reading the instructions, and this was no different. Initial set-up and play was easy for my 9 1/2 and 6 1/2-year-olds (they insist on those halves). We did watch an additional video to clarify attacks with molecule cards. The game is fast and fun and definitely increases interest in chemistry. Definitely fun for kids and adults! Finally sat down and had a game of valence with a medical student and a chemistry enthusiast with no real knowledge of the subject myself. . We had a great time playing! it was an eye opening experience for me and the information provided on each card enhanced the educational impact of the game. . Our future doctor at the table said she wished that there was an expansion for more complex molecules, but that was the only critique. I'm sure to get plenty of replay value from this product. . Thames & Kosmos Happy Atoms Magnetic Molecular Modeling Set And Complete Set

Chemistry is the science of materials, their properties, and how they react with each other. All materials are made of atoms. Why do some atoms combine with each other while other atoms do not? because atoms just want to be happy! atoms tend to be more stable, or "happy, " when they have certain numbers of electrons whizzing around their cores. Where do they find extra electrons if they need more to be happy? from other atoms that have too many electrons, of course! when atoms share or exchange electrons to be happy, they stick together. Happy atoms form molecules! this physical and digital kit lets you discover the world of molecules in an intuitive, hands-on way. Using a set of 50 atom models representing 16 different elements, you can assemble your own molecular models. The atoms stick together easily with magnets: metal tips on the ends of rubbery arms, which represent free electrons, snap onto magnetic bonding sites on the atom spheres, which represent empty spots for electrons in the atom's outermost electron shell. But how do you know what the molecule you've snapped together is? you use the included app for ipad and iphone to snap its picture, and the app uses state-of-the-art image recognition technology to identify the molecule. The app recognizes tens of thousands of molecules and presents detailed information about 120 of the most important ones, such as a molecule's usage, properties, hazards, formula, and structure. The app takes you on guided quests to discover new molecules and learn about them, and you can also track your progress, collecting sets of molecules that you have built and explored. Many people think of chemistry as complicated and hard to grasp. New technology now enables us to take this innovative approach to teaching chemistry, making it more tangible and instinctive than ever before. Requires ipad or iphone.

Compounded Board Game

Compounded is a game about building chemical compounds through careful management of elements, a fair bit of social play and trading, and just a bit ok luck. In compounded, players take on the roles of lab managers, hastily competing to complete the most compounds before they are completed by others - or destroyed in an explosion.

The F.A.Q. for science ninjas : valence card game- advanced chemistry + simple rules + ninjas teach kids how molecules form and chemicals interact

I played this game in vermont with my nephew. I now use two packs to play as part of my teaching at antioch charter academy in antioch, ca. The children vary in age from 9-13 and though we only played it once so far, they absolutely love it. We are scheduled to play every monday throughout the remainder of the school year. They are already suggesting rule changes. I insist they read the cards and discuss what is happening and why. They are getting the concept of balanced formulas and reinforcing the strategy aspect of the game. Dual purpose! . . They do not seem to care about the ninja aspect but i believe the coloration and action scenes drawn on the card are better than just dry facts. Perhaps if i had younger students? they also picked up on the rules fairly quickly, though i do have to remind them of some initial play aspects. After a few times playing, they will be proficient. A nice aspect is that we can play a round in the one hour allotment we have. We will try for two once we get the hang of it. . Thank you. . Paul belleci

A number of questions have been asked here.

(0) Question: Would this be too difficult for a 6 year old to start learning?

(1) Question: How many cards are there? are they paper or plastic? are all the 118 elements covered?

(2) Question: It doesn't say what is allowed in each turn. can a player draw, make a molecule, and attack all in one turn?

(3) Question: Can a group of 8-10 kids play together?

(4) Question: What is allowed at each turn? a combination of a draw, making a molecule and an attack? or just one action per turn?

(5) Question: Is this worth $25? most card games i have are $10-15. this will be a gift. should i get a game w/a board, pieces, etc instead? or supplement w/another gift?

(note) Question: where/how to get Science Ninjas (manufacturer's brand) accessories & similiar Science Ninjas's products

Love the balance between accurate chemistry principles and accessibility for a broad range of players through color coding. We enjoy playing and will definitely buy a few more sets for friends. Very understandable gameplay that allows for simple play and also deeper strategy. Respectfully suggest clarifying the rules about when the molecules' powers go into effect (immediately vs next turn vs whenever you choose), and what to do if the cards for one set of molecules in the molecule bank are exhausted. Great game!

My 13 year old daughter (8th grade) came home from science class and said they had played this and asked whether we could order it. When she said it was a science game and it was "really fun" i had to say yes, right? she and i and her 5th grade sister have played and they seem to really enjoy it - and the 5th grader is now getting exposure to science terms and ideas that she will tackle in a few years. Great holiday gift for a kid who has had some small exposure to the periodic table and has a little interest. (for adults that like chemistry and the periodic table, excellent book that is a narrative and really interesting history of the periodic table - i know, that sounds crazy, and i am not a science nut - a great book is "the disappearing spoon"). Good luck and enjoy!

I purchased this game to introduce the concept of valence and molecules to my 10 year old daughter. Obviously, this game is educational and easy to play but lacks more concepts on chemistry. My daughter mastered how to play it in one game. I wish this game includes more principles on chemistry. She already learned on the concept of atom, valence and molecules and already lost interest on the game.

V. Brenda, Isle of Wight

My 8yr son has recently been interested in science so i decided to start him out with the periodic table. When i was searching for books and posters i came across this game. The cards are durable and perfect for smaller hands. The best part that i like is that you use basic chemistry concepts to "defend" or "attack". This has been an amazing way for my son to learn and the information actually stick. Not going to lie it's also been a nice refresher for i as well.

O. Sheila, District of Columbia says

This game is great! i'm a science teacher, and my 11 year old daughter loves chemistry, so i bought this game for us to play this summer. She loves the game, and is already learning advanced high school content all while having fun. I do coach her on what to look for (acids always have a h and bases always have an oh group) but once it's brought to her attention, the game reinforces it for her. I plan to purchase more copies for my students to use during class. I sincerely hope this game developer comes up with other science games as great as this!

J. Reed, Isle of Wight

I'm a ms physical science teacher & got these to help my students learn about applying valences to learn how to create compounds, which can can be kinda dry material to learn. I've used a much simpler in design & less fun way i've done this, so was glad to see your kickstarter took off! my teaching partner and i played the game and can't wait to have our students play next week as an intro & later to help them review for assessment review.

A. Sandra, New Jersey says

We are loving this game! if you can add and subtract numbers up to 4 and match colors, you can play this game. This game is helping us introduce the concept of negative numbers as well as how atoms come together to form molecules, and the properties of those molecules. The artwork on the cards is fun and engaging. I hope the creators make another version with more reactions and using more elements. Science ninjas- you are geniuses.

D. Sally, Barnet

Initially, i ordered two decks valence, but when they arrived and i saw how legit the game was, i knew i needed to purchase three more so that i had enough sets for every student in my class play at once. Students saw the boxes of cards on my desk and were immediately curious about it! when i rolled out the game to my 9th grade intro to chem classes (after they had learned about ionic compounds but before we had done anything with chemical reactions), i made valence one of the three stations i use for small group instruction. I overviewed the game, but i told the kids they would have to read the instructions, learn the rules, and figure out how to play by themselves. Two things let me know that valence was a winner. (1) the kids were able to figure out how to play it on their own. I love the clear, concise instruction manual and the fact that the cards tell the students what to do as they play. (2) students were asking me if they could stay after school to play valence. Staying after school for a longer period of time is not something most high school students choose to do willingly. Overall, i'm a huge fan of how the game reinforces the use of oxidation numbers when forming compounds and the fact that it exposes them to advanced chemical reactions, teaching them without them even realizing it. Great work and a great resource for any chemistry or physical science classroom!

I bought this game for my 11 and 9 year old boys. My younger one opened the box and noticed the high quality of the cards right away! he read the instructions line by line and explained the whole game to his brother and me. We have been playing the game everyday since we got it. I, as a parent, like this game very much because it is fun and educational. It gives my children a chance to gain important knowledge through a well designed card game and repeatedly practice. We are curious if more cards can be added to this game. . This is my first time writing a review. Hope it helps.

My boys, ages 13 and 11, and i love this game. I am not a science whiz by any stretch, but we were able to pick it up and enjoy a fun game while learning about valence electrons and how various molecules react with one another. I definitely recommend this game to anyone who loves to play fun card games and to anyone who wants a fun way to teach or reinforce some basic chemistry. I bought this as a fun addition to our home school, but my boys play it on their own time.

We love this game. We have played a handful of times so far. I have 6 and 8 year olds and they are always asking if we can play. When mom and dad aren't able, they often play against each other. This game has different levels of complexity to it. We have altered the game a tad so they can get comfortable with the general idea before adding in all the moving parts. My 8 year old is definitely ready, but the 6 year old (the most competitive child you will ever meet, heaven help us) isn't yet. He is still learning to read, and some of the words he hasn't mastered yet. I'm excited for when we can play the whole game as it was designed. I don't think we are far from that. I'm sure that will make it that much more fun!

Wow! this game is amazing! i am an elementary school teacher in addition to leading a stem summer school class for 4th and 5th graders and both the boys and girls in my class cannot get enough of the valence! it is fairly easy to learn and i even have my 6-year-old son learn how to play in a matter of minutes and ask to play the game every day. The game doesn t take that long to play so it can be played multiple times over an hour or once if you just have a few minutes to spare. . As a teacher and parent, seeing students energized to play an educational card game (rather than with an ipad or video game) with awesome and unique graphics is truly rare. It is hands down the student s favorite game i have in my stem class. Better still, the game brings kids together to socialize and discuss science. What game can say that? ! it is very simple to carry around and clean up, which is something as a teacher/parent saves time and effort. Be sure to check out the science ninja's website where the characters continue to teach science concepts through stories.

This game is fun for both the kids and adults! santa bought 10+ games this year because the choices at the box stores are either fun for a kid or fun for a grownup and we needed games that we all could enjoy. This is the top pick for my 7 year old right now. We've played it every lunchtime over winter break - he's not getting tired of it and there's just enough strategy to keep it from being tedious for the adults.

Love the game! my 9 year old with no previous background in chemistry was hooked on this game from the start! in just 20 minutes of really fun playing he now understands the concept of valence bonds, principles of building acids, bases, salts, metal oxides, etc. And relationships of combinations of these compounds, like an acid can attack base and break it down into salt and water. He now strategizes and saves his elements to build more complex compounds. Yesterday i came home, and he was studying mendeleev table. As soon as he saw me, he screamed: "i just figured out a pattern! you are going down! "
