Everyone in my family loves games, except my husband. For christmas i try and find games that are highly reviewed for the family in hopes we'll find something he'll play. . My 12 yr old daughter played first and really enjoyed it. It's a "thinking" game- you can't play mindlessly- it really keeps your attention and isn't the same game, round after round. . It was my daughter's birthday and she asked her dad if he'd play with her. You can't say no to the birthday girl. He played and he loves it. We've played it once a day since christmas and took it to play with friends last night. They will be buying their own set for their family. Set Enterprises Five Crowns Junior Card Game (set 4300)"Five crowns is a simple card game that combines the logic of hearts, spades and rummy all into one game! the game is recommended for 2-7 players between the ages of 8 through adult. Much like the board game monopoly, we have developed "house rules" to make the game a little easier and more enjoyable for our family and friends! the game is played with 116 cards consisting of 5 suits (stars, hearts, clubs, spades and diamonds), 11 cards of each suit, but only ranging from 3 through king. There are also 6 joker cards in the game. . Getting started. After shuffling all 116 cards (we bought a battery powered card shuffler to achieve this feat), we each pick a card and to see who will deal first (lowest card deals). . Game time. It's now time to deal the first round of cards. The game begins by dealing each person 3 cards for the first round. As the rounds progress, the number of cards increase by one and the dealer rotates clockwise so each person has a chance to deal. The first round each person has 3 cards, the next round 4 cards, then 5 cards, and so forth. The remaining cards are placed in the middle (face down) for the draw pile and the top card is turned over to start the discard pile. . The first player has the choice to either take the card from the discard pile or take the top card from the draw pile. Either way, once that person takes a card, they must discard one. The object is to collect runs (3 or more cards in a row of the same suit) and/or books (3 or more cards of the same kind, regardless of the suit) and then go out as soon as possible. You can only "go out" if you're able to play all the cards in your hand by arranging them into books and/or runs. Once a player goes out, each remaining player has one last chance to either draw a card or take the discard to minimize their points. . Wild cards are established by the current round. So, in the first round, 3's are wild, the second round 4's are wild, and so on through the king round. If you're not sure what's wild, just count the number of cards in your hand! jokers are always wild. . Scoring. The proper way to play the game states, "each opponent scores the face value of every card that is not part of a set or a book, plus 50 points for each joker and 20 for each current wild (that you're unable to use in a set or a book). " however, to make scoring easier for our family, we play with a slightly different house rule. Instead of receiving points based on the face value of the card, each opponent get 5 points for every card that is not part of a set or a book, 20 points for an unusable joker or wild card, and 10 points for 10's through kings. . The lowest score after the 11th (king) round wins. On average, each game tends to take between 45 minutes to an hour. . Conclusion. My wife and i never played card games, but after trying this game we find ourselves playing it every chance we get. When we have friends over, the adults tend to migrate towards the kitchen for 5 crowns and beer. Adults love this game because it combines their favorite card games of hearts, spades and rummy all into one. It provides them with the challenge to decide whether that a specific card should be used to make a book or go with two other cards to complete a run. Children like the challenge of making books and runs and the scoring is great for sharpening those addition skills. Finally, everyone loves that the game is never truly over until "the kings go wild! ". . We play this so much, that i created an online scoring sheet to track the players and calculate the scores on my ipad, tablet, laptop, etc!"

Playing Card Holders, Set of 2

Fun and easy way to hold a handful of cards even for small hands. The only reason to lose one star is that one of the holders' internal felt which creates pressure to keep the cards in place has peeled a little from the plastic. This causes a scraping noise every time i insert a card, and i suspect eventually will peel away from the plastic completely, rendering the holder useless in time.

Playing cards could be more enjoyable with these card holders which let you play hands free! lets you concentrate more on the game rather than worrying about hand cramps and holding a full hand of cards.

Im giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because the adhesive lining in one of the holders was apparently loose. When mom tried to remove a card it was stuck between the adhesive side and the frame. I had a very difficult time removing the card. Fortunately it did not damage the card. I pressed the lining down thoroughly and we were able to play without any further trouble. I have 4 other of these frames and we love them! we often hold double the number of cards it says it will hold by stacking a second row behind the first.

- I. ErinI have 4 young boys ages 8 and under. We play a lot of card games from go fish and old maid to classics like gin rummy and poker. Card games are a great way to get off the kindles, wii and tv. The only problem has been that they have small hands and struggle to hold the cards without showing their hands. Not anymore. These things are big and perfect for small hands. My three year old can use these and i like the fact they can stand up on the floor or a table by themselves or be held in a hand or two. I bought multiple sets of these. For the money they are well worth it. They are also heavy duty and i am sure they will last for years.

My family and i recently started playing a bunch of different card games recently to spend more quality time together. With usually at least 2 kids playing, they often had a hard time holding a lot of cards, especially when playing uno and being on the wrong end of multiple draw 4 s. I went ahead and purchased 2 sets of these so we would have 4 total holders. Let s just say the complaining at the table due card holding issues has dropped dramatically. Anyone who has a hard time holding cards, whether small hands like children, to someone with arthritis, to me who prefers not to hold my cards can benefit from these. They do stand well on our dining room table and have little pads on the feet to prevent scratches. The box says holds 15 cards, but will hold closer to 20 if you space them right and don t mind a little extra overlap. . The only complaint i have on these is the material inside the holder isn t fully glued down, and sometime a card gets shoved between the outside shell and the inner material (rubber? ). The card gets stuck and has to be yanked out. I can probably fix with a few drops of superglue when i remember to do so. . Pros; . Holds up to 15 cards (can hold more if stacked properly). Easy to use. Great price. Great for the kids. Stands up on its own. . Cons:. Rubber inside wasn t fully glued, so cards occasionally get stuck between plastic and rubber material. . This game is our favorite. The whole family loves it and our 5 year old wants to play it every day. What's really great is us adults really enjoy it too! the game is very imaginative and the illustrations are amazing and fun. Especially love that it was created by a 6 year old girl. Great inspiration for our little one. It says 8 and up but our 5 year old loves it. Needs a little bit of guidance on some of the math but otherwise gets it and can play abouy 95% independently. My 6 and 8 year old girls love this game, they play it with the kids in their play group and everyone bought their own game as well. It is addictive. Great for boys and girls of all ages. - X. WaytI had played this game about 10 years ago and remembered loving it. I just wasn't sure how my 8 and 4 year old boys would do. My 8 year old picked up on it immediately and loves it! to discard the number cards, you try to come up with an equation to get rid of as many cards as you can (a 2, 3, and 5 card can be played as 2+3 5). This is great addition/subtraction practice for him. My husband really enjoys this part of the game as well, coming up with most complex equations he can think of with a max of 5 numbers at a time. He'll throw in multiplication and division. My 4 year old has figured out how to play the game, except for the equation aspect, of course. He knows he can discard any matching numbers, but when he has a bunch of number cards he will just hand the cards to me to see if there is an equation he can use. Other than that, he can play the game completely on his own and has the same chance of winning as anyone else. The artwork on the cards is adorable and gameplay seems to be just right at about 15 minutes per game. The more people playing, the better as you appreciate having time between turns to figure out how to discard all the number cards in your hand. Hands down, this is the favorite game of everyone in the family and we have played it daily since buying it.

This was an instant favorite in our house! we first played it at a kid's game club, and knew we had to get it right away. The small size is perfect for bringing with when going to a friend's house or on a trip. You do need some space to spread the queens out when you play, so it may not work great on a plane (you could possibly do it, just not the easiest thing in the world). . The game can feel very daunting at first. It seems like there are a lot of rules and a lot of information to remember. Just play it! it's one of those games that doesn't fully make sense until you actually play it. Once you play it it all seems so obvious and easy! if you've played sushi go, also by gamewright, you'll know what i'm talking about. This is easier to learn than sushi go. Game play is simple, but fun. Even my three year old was able to pick up on the game! this is a kid who doesn't grasp how to play any other game, or have the attention span for any other game! he loves sleeping queens and will play an entire game and ask to play again! . . I'm not going to go into full detail on how to play because the video, description, instructions, and other reviewers have done that already. This is an awesome game though. Two friends have already purchased it for their kids because of our raving about it or the kids having played it together, and it's a favorite at their houses too now! even adults enjoy it. My son and i ( and the rest of my family- lol) have been playing the regular skip-bo game for years. This is a great card game to play with young kids.

Good modification of the original for little kids. It doesn't require anyone to hold cards, they're all played on the table, so that's helpful for little hands that have a hard time holding them. It's a little boring for older kids, because it doesn't require any strategy, and you can see everyone's cards, but you would be able to play the regular skip-bo rules with this deck if you wanted to.

To paint a clearer picture of how to play, the game is the same as uno in that you make matches - number or color - however, in this game, there is the added match of shape. You can match shapes that are the same regardless of number or color. You can match numbers that are the same regardless of shape or color. And of course, you can match colors which are the same regardless of the shape or the number. Instead of only one card upon which to match, each player has an upturned card in front of them onto which anyone can match - thus making the game so fast and as my students said "it's called blink 'cause you can't blink - you might miss a match you can make on any of the piles! It's a great tool for learning counting, matching, colours, and shapes. Playing against just adults is fun, too!

Love this game! super simple to learn (though you can watch how a game is played on youtube) and each game takes only a few minutes to complete. Cards seem very durable and well-made. The only drawback is that it is only a 2-player game; sure, you could play with more and just increase the face up pile (and could play with more than one deck as well). But it would probably be a little too crazy (which might actually be a good thing for some people! ). But i usually just play with my wife so no big deal. I love other mattel card games (skip-bo and uno) so add one more really fun, addicting game to play with the family.

This one is a lot of fun. The game is not complicated to learn but takes a few rounds. It's a great brain teaser as that last draw forces you to quickly calculate how to keep your points to a minimum. Some of the possibilities require a little mental analysis. Players at all levels can have fun but we most enjoyed wrestling with the last draw as each hand ends. We want to play some more so we can explore some more. Hopefully the christmas holidays will provide enough time to develop a taste for the "full flavor" of the game. It's a winner.

What an addictive fun easy card game! great for kids too. Families- get this because it'll be good times for the family as a unit. You have to think which is much better than video games ! get your kids involved with you and they will learn to see thinking is fun! and competitive. And let's face it, competition is a bad word for scholar kids these days, sadly. I guarantee a fun time to be had by all. This is a fabulous card game, it's like rummy, but with 5 suits of cards instead of four. The rules of the game are simple, and it's easy to pick up, yet the game is challenging, as each hand has a different wild card. Starting with only 3 cards dealt, and 3's are wild, you play rounds up through kings (13 cards, kings are wild), and jokers are always wild. The game moves quickly, and is addictive. A person can be behind all game but still win in the final round. This game was recommended to us and we are really glad we tried it.

A group of friends and i used to play skip-bo, then one day we tried 5 crowns. Never went back. We ve played 5 crowns ever since. It s a great rummy-style game. We play with 3-6 players and it s self-limiting on the time. There are 11 hands to a game and we usually finish in about an hour. Of course you can play more than one game if you like. We keep score but just laugh about the results - no pressure.

Five crowns can be quickly learned and is fun to play. The deck is huge, which means shuffling is rather difficult, but it also means that the game can be played by more people and that it is more challenging-and hence more fun-to calculate the probability that one will be able to get the card(s) needed to complete a set. If you like gin rummy, you will find five crowns somewhat reminiscent of gin rummy, but with an extra suit and and duplicates of each card, plus an ever-changing wild card and number of cards dealt to begin a hand. The friends to whom we have introduced the game have quickly acquired their own decks, which is a testament to how much fun this simple game is.

I played this card game at my sister-in-law's house and we had a lot of fun. Like rummy, only a couple of things to make it more interesting. Low score wins but the points can change drastically after just one hand. I plan to play this game with grandkids (who are adults) and give a couple of gift cards for winner and runner-up. My wife and i seldom play card games but this game is addicting! it s easy to play and lots of fun. We play it so often that we replace the deck from time to time. Our most recent purchase is different from previous purchases. The yellow ink used to print these new cards is very light in color making it difficult to read. I'm not going to return them, but i hope the next deck i buy has a more contrasting yellow.

The five crowns card game is so awesome. My family and friends play this a lot. We can play 3 games of this in one sitting. We have a competition log book that keeps our scores by number of players playing. We play so much that they get worn out and we've had to buy new sets. Personally, i have bought 4-5 replacement sets and one of my older brothers has bought 2. The object is to have the lowest score to win. The rounds start with 3 cards up to 13 (king) the jokers are wild cards, but also the round of cards you're on is also a wild card. There are 11 rounds, the cards start with the number 3 and end with king (13). You have to make sets, runs (runs must be the same suit) or combo of both as long as you use the number of cards in the round you are on to go out. Once someone is out the other players still get one turn. If they don't have matches those points are against them. The player with the lowest score of the 11 rounds is the winner. The lowest score in my group is 4. That score hasn't been beaten in 3 years! highest number of people playing in my group is 7.

While i don't usually like 'rummy-style' games, this game rates a 10 on my harsh scale. It's rummy on steroids! . . Here's a tip that the manufacturer won't like me to share that will make your cards last 5-6 times longer. After a hand is over, we put the used cards aside and just continue dealing from the unused cards. People may complain that "we used a lot of jokers (or the next wild card) already so we need to shuffle" but after playing this way for years i can attest that it makes no difference at all because everyone is on equal footing. I've challenged doubters to speak up if they notice one iota of difference in the play and i've had unanimous agreement that it made no difference. . If playing two-handed, you'll only shuffle 3 times! once to begin, again after 8's are wild, and after either 11's or 12's (it varies). 3 times vs. 11 if you shuffle before every hand, greatly prolongs the life of the cards (even so, we've gone through about a dozen sets).

I cannot begin to tell you how many nights we have played this game. We play it all the time. There are four of us (myself, my 11 year old, my 9 year old and my 8 year old) we all love this game. Now just for some background, i taught my kids a few years ago how to play rummy 500 so they had a solid knowledge of what to expect. . This card game is so much fun! my family loves it and we play it all the time. It's very simple for kids to learn and play. My eight-year old loves it and asks us to play it with him a lot. The game adds a suit. Stars. To the 4 suits. There are no aces or twos. In the first hand, you are dealt three cards. The threes and the jokers are wild. As soon as the first person makes three-of-a-kind or a run (like 8, 9, 10 in the same suit) and lays down their hand, the rest of the players get one more play, then the round is over. The cards are worth a certain amount of points against you if you get stuck with them in your hand by not being able to make three-of-a-kind or a run. The next round, four cards are dealt and the fours and jokers are wild. Play continues like this until you get to the kings. You get 13 cards and the kings and jokers are wild. You can make any combinations of three-of-a-kind and sets as long as each has at least three cards. In the end, the person with the least points is the winner. If you're looking for some good family entertainment, this is the game!

My 7 year old daughter fell in love with uno after getting it as a christmas gift and wanted to try some other card games. Frankly, this is not one of her favorites of the 5 or so i bought her. My thoughts are that this is because the game lacks a little pizzaz compared to some of the games really for kids (there aren't cute cartoon characters on the cards or anything), i think it is a bit hard for a 7 year old, and i think the keeping score over multiple hands doesn't appeal to the attention span of a 7 year old. . I'm sure at this point your wondering why i gave this 5 stars? well, my wife and i actually really enjoy this game so while i debated 4 stars i decided to go with 5 for now (although see below about card quality). This game is very similar to rummy but with a twist. There are no 2s or aces but there is a 5th suit and a lot of wild cards. You basically play rummy starting with a 3 card hand, then 4 card hand, then 5 card and so on up to a 13 card hand. You try to go out first. If you don't you get one more turn to get rid of any 3+ card runs you have and those you can't lay, you get stuck with points (a low score is good) based on how high of a card you have. At the end of the 13 card hand round, the lowest score wins. . I like the game because a) you can play with two players and have fun-that seems to be pretty rare in card games in general and for me and my wife, it is a nice find b)i like rummy but find it a bit boring and this game jazzes up rummy enough to make it more interesting and c) it is not super complex and i find it relaxing to play (i will say in the 12 and 13 card hands it does get a little more complex mentally digesting all the card and possible runs you have, but it isn't bad). It also moves fairly fast. It takes us about 30 minutes to play through the 3-13 card hands. . I will say, especially since i bought several card games at once and had something to compare to, i do not think these cards are very high quality. They seem thin and don't have much of a sheen on them like they have that protective laquer type coating on them. I wonder if they will wear well over time if we use them a lot. One thing i do like is the game came in an appropriate sized box with a small tray for the cards in it. A lot of these games come in much larger boxes than needed and still have no where to hold the cards and make the game harder to carry around to different households and store for no great reason.

This game is very simple to learn and is a lot of fun. Once every one knows how to play you can easily sit down and play one round in 20-30 minutes! the colors match the suits (like all clubs are green) that makes it much easier for kids who don't understand regular suits. It does require addition so younger kids will need some help with that. I would say children under 10/11 would get bored/confused easily. Adults love it and it's great for competition! you can easily be in last place the whole game and still end up winning once you get to the last play of cards and vice versa! it will drive people who have to win everything mad!
